Waiver Wire: Week 13

30. November 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time to go the waiver wire…

PICKUP OF WEEK
Brian Westbrook (SF)
- After being a non-factor through the season's first 11 weeks, the veteran running back resurfaced on the fantasy radar after blowing up for 136 yards and a score in relief of Frank Gore last night. With Gore out for the season expect Westbrook to have plenty of value down the stretch.

QB
Kerry Collins (TEN)
– Should start from here on out
Chad Henne (MIA) – Looked good in return vs. OAK
Jason Campbell (OAK) – Gradkowski sidelined again

RB
Toby Gerhart (MIN)
– must add for Peterson owners
Maurice Morris (DET) – sneaky play down stretch, especially in PPR’s
Anthony Dixon (SF) – great long-term potential
Mike Hart (IND) – Unlike Addai, Hart is getting healthy
Tashard Choice (DAL) – will benefit from Barber’s injury

WR
Kenny Britt (TEN)
– A return is looming
Danario Alexander (STL) – Amazingly talented IF he stays healthy
Jacboy Ford (OAK) – Showing he’s not a fluke
Davone Bess (MIA) – Likely dropped in many leagues
Ben Obomanu  (SEA) – emerging in weak Seattle offense

TE
Joel Dreesen (HOU)
– Daniels out again; nice matchup
Kevin Boss (NYG) – getting looks with injuries to receivers
Brent Celek (PHI) – developing some chemistry with Vick

DEF
Seahawks
– going against the Panthers is always appealing
Rams – underrated and a favorable schedule down stretch

Costas Talks Big Red Machine

30. November 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

"Big Red Machine" featured on MLB Network
Hall of Famers and former Cincinnati Reds teammates Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez - members of the "Big Red Machine" - are featured in a new episode of MLB Network's Studio 42 with Bob Costas on Friday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Throughout the hour-long interview filmed in Cooperstown, New York in July 2010, Bench, Morgan and Perez discuss playing for the late Hall of Fame Manager Sparky Anderson, winning the 1975 World Series against the Boston Red Sox in seven games, where the Reds? dynasty of the 1970's ranks in Major League Baseball history, and if former teammate Pete Rose should be a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Prior to Studio 42 with Bob Costas, MLB Network's live nightly studio show during the offseason, Hot Stove, will air at 6:00 p.m. ET with updates and analysis of the moves all 30 clubs are making and planning in preparation for the upcoming season. Studio 42 with Bob Costas is presented by Travelers.

Highlights from the interview include:

BENCH ON THE BIG RED MACHINE
"Joe Morgan was the one guy that absolutely put our team really over the top....Then we had George Foster come in, Ken Griffey Sr. was as good a two-place hitter as there has ever been in the game, and Cesar Geronimo won four Gold Glove awards. I mean, how could you ask for a better team?"

MORGAN ON PLAYING FOR HALL OF FAME MANAGER SPARKY ANDERSON:
"Sparky Anderson made sure that not only these three guys [Bench, Perez and Morgan], but everybody on the team knew that we were only a little small spoke in the wheel. We weren't the wheel. Everybody in here is part of this wheel. And you do your job, and he didn't care whether Johnny Bench drove in the winning run, or Pete Rose or whomever. He just said, 'Get it done.' And we did."

MORGAN ON WINNING THE 1975 AND 1976 WORLD SERIES:
"We were a complete team. We could do more than just pitch and hit. We could run the bases, we could play defense. And I've said it before, we were the smartest team I've ever been around.... Bob Howsam was the General Manager who put this team together. He said to me after we won in 1976, 'Joe, there will never be another team like this.'"

BENCH ON PETE ROSE BEING INELIGBLE FOR INDUCTION TO THE NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME:
"If Pete Rose got help and came out and said, 'I have a problem. I realize now that I have a problem.' And if he fell on his knees and said, 'My gosh, I'm sorry to all of America and all of baseball.' I think it would have been two years, three years, five years at most."

Big East Lands TCU

30. November 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

from FOXSports.com...

This was the one program that was in the mix and could’ve been in play for the Big 12, to help get it back to being the Big 12. This was going to be the anchor of the rebuilding Mountain West that loses Utah and BYU but gets Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada. And now it gives the eight-team Big East more teeth. Now it’s a big get for a conference that was dormant during expansion last summer.

For the Big East, this is a huge step forward to not only expand the geographic area of the conference, diving into the Texas markets to help recruiting and TV ratings, and it also brings in a strong, BCS-bowl-level program at a time when the league is starting to improve.

Game Balls: Week 12

29. November 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

RB Game Ball - Peyton Hillis, Cleveland - 26 carries, 131 yards, 3 TD, 6 catches, 63 yards
It's not that tough to figure out where the Browns may be without their stud running back. Winless would be a pretty good bet. Right not Hillis is everything for Cleveland. The team has had a merry-go-round at the QB position and Jake Delhomme did not look very good against his former team on Sunday with no TDs and two interceptions. Hillis led the team in receiving yards against the Panthers and leads the team in receptions for the year. And if the Browns score, it's usually Hillis doing the dance. He has accounted for 13 of the teams 21 TDs this season. Just imagine how good he might be if someone actually helped him out.

RB Honorable Mention - Arian Foster, Houston - 30 carries, 143 yards, 9 catches, 75 yards (getting close to Faulk/Tomlinson/Peterson fantasy numbers.)

QB Game Ball - Sam Bradford, St. Louis - 22/37, 308 yards, 3 TD
Before the season started, the NFC West looked pretty weak. And, well, it is. Most would have thought the 49ers would walk to an easy title. But that has not happened. It's actually the Rams with their rookie QB who are sitting in the driving seat for the playoffs. Bradford has a career-day against the Broncos on Sunday notching his first 300+ yard game and his first 3 TD performance. In his last six games he has 11 TDs and just one interception. And he has his team looked toward the post-season.

QB Honorable Mention - Jay Cutler, Chicago - 14/21, 247 yards, 4 TD (amazing what a running game can do to help the offense - Forte 117 rushing yards.)

WR Game Ball - Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City - 13 catches, 170 yards, 3 TD
If the Rams are the surprise in the NFC, the Chiefs hold that title in the AFC. KC has a solid offense with Matt Cassel putting up big numbers every week. They have a two-headed running back in veteran Thomas Jones and youngster Jamal Charles. And they have a stud receiver in Bowe. He has scored in seven straight games with a total of 13 in that span. Throw that in with 465 receiving yards in the last three games and you have one hot receiver.

WR Honorable Mention - Greg Jennings, Green Bay - 5 catches, 119 yards (may be the only guy hotter than Bowe in the last month and a half.)

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Peyton Manning, QB, Indianapolis - 31/48, 285, 2 TD, Int
Last week Peyton got the honorable mention in this column - this week the socks are all his. The 'stud' QB has thrown seven picks in his last two games and now has 11 on the season. Sure, he also has six TDs in the last two games and some nice yardage, but most of that has been in come-from-behind mode and the Colts ended up losing both of those games. Yeah, injuries have been a problem for Indy on both sides of the ball. But in the end the team l rests on Peyton's shoulders. And for now they have to live with his stinking socks.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Cortland Finnegan, CB, Tennessee - 4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 ejection (no class.)
