For the second straight year John Calipari got the best of Rick Pitino as the Kentucky Wildcats rolled past the Louisville Cardinals, 78-63.

Brandon Knight scored 25 points, the most by a UK freshman against Rex Chapman, and Josh Harrellson had a career day with 23 points and 14 boards in a spirited effort.

The Cardinals got out to a 12-6 lead to start the game before the Wildcats put together a 15-2 run and never looked back.

DeAndre Liggins scored two points on 1-for-7 shooting, but Calipari called him “the difference in the game” for his harassing defense on Preston Knowles and point guard Peyton Siva, who was 2 for 9 from the floor.

Conversely, the Cards’ defense was not able to slow UK. In fact Kentucky was the first team this season to have more assists (14) than turnovers (13) against Louisville.

Here’s the stat Kentucky fans can enjoy the most – Aside from his two wins versus the Billy Gillispie-led Wildcats, Pitino has dropped six of the last eight against his former team (0-2 vs. Calipari and 2-6 vs. Tubby Smith).

Bengals: Lewis Expects Quick Decision

29. December 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Despite back-to-back wins, many are still expecting Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis to move on at season's end.

Lewis talked about the situation with FanHouse.com:

“I think we’ll know something there by Monday or Tuesday,” Lewis told Thomas George of Fanhouse.com. “We [Bengals owner Mike Brown and Lewis] talk every day about the future. About the football team, the players and the personnel.

“We’ve got to decide how it is going to be. His vision of the football team and mine. There are certain things he wants to emphasize with me. Things that are important to him. I expect to hear those.”

The Cincinnati Bearcats cruised past the DePaul Blue Demons on Tuesday night to move to 13-0.

I have remained skeptical of UC's fast start, but one thing is for sure - they will get a chance to prove their legitimacy.

Bengals: Receiver Makeover

28. December 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Cincinnati Bengals have doubled their season win total over the last two games, including Sunday’s improbable upset of the San Diego Chargers.

Playing without wide receivers Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, quarterback Carson Palmer delivered one of his best days of the season as he completed 16-of-21 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns.

Third-year wideout Jerome Simpson, who mustered just three career receptions before this recent winning streak began, caught six balls for 124 yards and a score.  Rookies Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley continued to show promise and even running back Bernard Scott was involved.

With the T.Ocho Show preempted on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium fans got a taste what life may look like post divas. The team is unlikely likely to resign Owens, who will be 38 next year, and will save over $3 million to let Ochocinco walk.

I am not blaming all of the Bengals’ offensive woes on either Owens or Ochocinco. They did combine for 139 catches this season. However, clearly Palmer and offensive coordinator were at ease without having the pressure of getting the ball to the two veterans.

While I am not ready to jump on the bandwagon and still want to see the team clean house with its coaching staff, there does appear to be some upside in the team’s young targets.

Waiver Wire: 2010 Awards

28. December 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Rotoworld.com looks at the best and worst of this year's fantasy waiver wire...

The "Waiver Wired MVP" Award, the "Successful Hype Train" Award, and the "Outhouse to the Penthouse" Award
All go to … Michael Vick, Eagles - Way back in Week 1, before the season started, Vick was recommended as the ideal roster stash because he was the player most likely to become a "weekly asset" if given the opportunity. By Week 2, it was clear that Vick had regained the electric playmaking ability so evident early in his career. I urged all quarterback-needy owners to eschew Brandon Jackson and "pounce on" a difference-making Vick instead. How valuable has Vick been? Non-scientific evidence suggests the majority of his owners are in the Week 16 finals, perhaps still hanging on for Tuesday night's results. The numbers back it up, too. Vick's 29.7 fantasy points per week are 4.7 more than second-place Aaron Rodgers' 25.0.

The "Where Was His Hype Train?" Award
Goes to … Peyton Hillis, Browns - The Albino Rhino was a recommended pickup in Weeks 1 and 2, but who saw his second-place fantasy finish coming? Though he failed to score in the fantasy playoffs, Hillis piled up 13 touchdowns in the first 12 games of the season while finishing fourth among running backs with 60 receptions.

The "Missed the Boat" Award
Goes to ... Brandon Lloyd, Broncos - It's not that I ignored Lloyd early in the season. He made the waiver list, but I couldn't have whiffed harder in pointing out that he had always been an immature, unreliable, injury-prone tease. Lloyd responded by leading the NFL in receiving yards while placing second in receiver fantasy points.
