Bengals: Chad Speaks Out

30. June 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Even though the NFL offseason has been quiet, Chad Ochocinco has not. Check out some of recent takes from an radio interview with The 2 Live Stews...

Is Carson Palmer done? Is he playing?
“I haven’t talked to him, but he’s not playing. He’s not playing. When someone goes out of character like that, especially a white guy with red hair that grows a random beard? When he says he’s going to do something he’s going to do it. He’s not playing.”

What are your thoughts on Marvin Lewis because he’s taken some shots at you too? Is that relationship repairable?
“I don’t know. Hopefully Marvin is doing this maybe to help me out. Maybe he is trying to cause some friction between himself and me. Maybe he doesn’t like me for real. He doesn’t like me well I don’t like him either. Maybe he’s doing this to help the situation out. Maybe he’s trying to do this to show Mike Brown I don’t think I can coincide with Chad, but dammit I can’t coincide with him either and if he really feels that way when I see him I’m going to whoop his ass.”

Dunn Getting Desperate

29. June 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Winning NFL picks, odds and power rankings all from our friends at Doc's Sports Service.

When a team hits the 81-game mark they’ve reached the halfway point of their season. The Chicago White Sox hit the milestone on Wednesday night. The team finished the first-half of the year with a 39-42 record and four games back in the AL Central.

One of the most disappointing parts of the team has been the play of newly acquired DH Adam Dunn. Check out his pathetic statline below:

.173 BA, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 100 K, 42 BB, .308 OBP, .316 SLG, .624 OPS

It’s hard to call this a slump when it has lasted the entire season. After investing heavily in Dunn in the offseason, the White Sox are getting desperate.  Dunn is already seeing a psychologist and Chicago called up minor league pitchers just to pitch to the slugger in hope he may soon get out of his rut.

Maybe Dunn isn’t in a slump, perhaps he’s washed up.

Fantasy: RB Reception Leaders

28. June 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Winning NFL picks, odds and power rankings all from our friends at Doc's Sports Service.

Here's a look at the top 20 leaders for receptions at the RB postion from 2010 for PPR reference...

1. (14th overall) LeSean McCocy, PHI - 78 receptions
2. (30th) Arian Foster, HOU - 66 receptions
3. (38th) Ray Rice, BAL - 63 receptions
4. (39th) Peyton Hillis, CLE - 61 receptions
5. (44th) Darren Sproles, SD - 59 receptions
6. (47th) Jahvid Best, DET - 58 receptions
7. (56th) LaDainian Tomlinson, NYJ - 52 receptions
8. (60th) Matt Forte, CHI - 51 receptions
9. (68th) Felix Jones, DAL - 48 receptions
10. (71st) Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG - 47 receptions
11. (71st) Darren McFadden, OAK - 47 receptions
12. (77th) Frank Gore, SF - 46 receptions
13. (77th) Steven Jackson, STL - 46 receptions
14. (77th) Cadillac Williams, TB - 46 receptions
15. (82nd) Jamaal Charles, KC - 45 receptions
16. (87th) Chris Johnson, TEN - 44 receptions
17. (87th) Jason Snelling, ATL - 44 receptions
18. (106th) Mike Goodson, CAR - 41 receptions
19. (110th) Keiland Williams, WAS - 39 receptions
20. (114th) Knowshon Moreno, DEN - 37 receptions

FINAL TAKE: There's no doubt that players like McCoy, Foster, Rice, Hillis, Best and Forte all see a slight spike in their already solid fantasy value in leagues where owners get points per reception. Seeing Adrian Peterson's name not on the list makes it tough for us to put him at the No. 1 spot in PPR formats, a spot where he can easily be argued at in standard formats. Situations change every year, so finding backs that have a track record of catching the ball out of the backfield is better than going off of just one season of stats. Still don't disregard the value of guys that consistently pull in 40 catches per year.

Kentucky Extends Calipari

27. June 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

from official press release...

University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari, who led the Wildcats to the school’s 14th NCAA Final Four appearance last season, has been rewarded with an eight-year contract worth a total of $36.5 million plus the opportunity for performance-based incentives, UK Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart announced Monday. See attachments for the actual contract which includes an amendment to the previous agreement along with details of the eight-year deal.

“What John Calipari has done on and off the court in the past two years to reunite and rejuvenate this fan base has been magical,” Barnhart said. “He understands the responsibility that goes along with this position and there is no other coach out there that is a better fit for the best basketball program in the country.”

In two seasons, Calipari has led the Wildcats to a 64-12 (.889) overall mark, including UK’s first Final Four appearance in 13 years last season. Calipari became only the second coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the Final Four. Boasting a perfect 33-0 home record in two years at Rupp Arena, he also led Kentucky to its second straight Southeastern Conference Tournament title.

Chapman's Time Is Now

25. June 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

After spending the maximum 30 days on a minor-league rehab assignment, the Cincinnati Reds activated Aroldis Chapman from the disabled list prior to Friday night’s loss in Baltimore and optioned lefty reliever Jeremy Horst to Triple-A Louisville.

The Cuban Missle’s rehab assignment wasn’t exactly smooth as he recovered from shoulder inflammation and control problems.  Chapman allowed 12 runs in 13 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, but did have a solid 20:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio and put up a pair of scoreless innings in over his final two appearances.

Before being put on the shelf in mid-May the left hander had a 6.92 ERA and more walks (20) than strikeouts (15) in 13 innings for the Reds. He walked 12 of the last 19 batters he faced before the Reds shut him down. Manager Dusty Baker plans to ease him back into the mix by working Chapman in low-pressure situations out of the bullpen.

There are mixed opinions on what the Reds should do with Chapman, but considering the team signed him to a six-year, $30.25 million major league contract in January 2010 that included a fat $16.25 million signing bonus, the Reds have to figure it out at the Major League level.

If they have doubts, than perhaps it’s time to put him on the trading block. Rest assured there is a market for a lefty that throws 105 MPH.
