Around the Web: Barry Larkin

20. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Here are some great reads from around the web about Barry Larkin, who will be inducted into the Baseball HOF:

Barry Larkin a consummate professional (Jim Bowden, ESPN.com)
Barry goes into the Hall of Fame this weekend as his era’s best NL shortstop, but he’s also going in because of his high character, integrity, family values and all of the championship-caliber insight he gave the organization -- his only organization -- throughout his career. On behalf of my family, congratulations to you, Barry, on achieving the ultimate accomplishment for a major league baseball player...MORE

Larkin's underrated greatness goes beyond place among shortstops (Cliff Corcoran, SI.com)
There wasn't anything Barry Larkin didn't do well on the baseball diamond, and he upheld similar standards off of it, winning the 1993 Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes involvement in the community, and 1994 Lou Gehrig Award, which recognizes character and integrity...MORE

Larkin persevered through doubt to reach Hall of Fame (Jack Etkin, MLB.com)
Larkin was a complete player, a Hall of Fame talent, as it turned out. He reached the Reds after a brief apprenticeship in the Minors. Larkin was so gifted, it's hard to imagine he ever questioned his ability. But he did...MORE

Larkin the quite superstar (Bill Lankhof, Toronto Sun)
If baseball had a Lady Byng Trophy, Larkin would be your candidate. He is, perhaps arguably, one of the 10 best shortstops in baseball history. But, having played in a small-media town, away from the glare of big city notoriety, he is also one of baseball’s best-kept secrets...MORE

Fantasy 101: Auction vs. Draft

19. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Nearly all of the fantasy leagues out there are still using a snake-draft format to select their teams, but amazingly FFToolbox.com suggests that 95 percent of leagues that experiment with an auction-style format never go back.

While new ways of doing things can often be intimidating there are many factors to consider that may lead to your league switching the style in which teams are selected.

HOW DOES AN AUCTION WORK?
Owners take turns making opening bids on players in a predefined format. Instead of simply adding players to their rosters, however, participants place them "on the block." An opening bid is introduced and auction-style bidding follows ("Going once... Going twice... Sold!"). The league has a preset, imaginary salary cap (e.g. $100) that people cannot go over. However, a roster limit must still be recognized (i.e. if you use 16-man rosters, all owners must bid on 16 players with a minimum of $1 bid per player). The highest bidder adds the player to his or her roster and the winning bid is subtracted from that bidder's salary cap. This process continues until all the rosters are full.

ADVANTAGES OF AN AUCTION
--More Fair: Why should some random process determine who the league gets the best player or No. 1 pick. In an auction ALL PLAYERS ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL OWNERS.

--More Flexible: Often in snake drafts your draft position often determines the strategy in which you build your team. However, in an auction owners are in more control where they invest highly and can focus more on those areas.

--More Fun: There’s nothing worse in a snake draft that waiting a half an hour in between your picks. The dead time really drags on in later rounds. However, in an auction every owner is engaged at all times as they can bid on any player.

--More Strategic: For people that have played fantasy football for more than a few years, you could probably do a snake draft in your sleep.  Preparing for an auction is not much different, but definitely will present some new wrinkles and exciting elements to picking your team. If you want to spend 80 percent of your money on a couple of studs and build the rest on the low end you can. If you want to have a nice mix of value at multiple positions you can go that route as well.

DRAWBACKS OF AN AUCTION
--Must Think Outside of the Box: Getting your league to switch to an auction is going to be a tough sell, especially to those owners that tend to pick up a magazine on the way to the draft. The reality is though that preparation time is no different. The key is to know which players you wish target with big bucks and as sleepers going in.

--Keeping It Simple: An auction can initially be very initimidating to owners, so before you hit with a bunch of ideas really fast you need to sell them on the benefits first and then how it works.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
--Balance: Use the following guide lines to the salary cap on your starters: one QB - 10-15%, two RBs - 50-60%, three WRs - 25-35% (adjusting for your league's settings), and roughly the minimum at all the other positions and back-ups. This should lead to fielding a competitive squad.

--Perceived Value: After each player is sold, simply write down how much he sold for next to his name on your cheat sheet. This will give you an idea of how your league perceives value, allowing you to bid accordingly. For example, if the 18th ranked WR on your cheat sheet sold for $14 and now the 12th ranked WR is going for only $10, you should bid $11 for him, knowing it would be a bargain. By simply keeping track of how much people are spending on whom, you will make sure not to overpay too much for anyone.

Reds Lose Votto For Month

16. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

On the heels of a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals are riding a six-game winning streak, the Cincinnati Reds got some bad news on Monday as All-Star first basemen Joey Votto was placed  on the 15-day DL due to a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Votto had surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.  Signs of the injury first surfaced in late June as the team was on an 11-game West Coast road trip. However, Votto tried to play through it and even participated in All-Star game festivities.

The Reds would’ve been better served to get the MRI done and put him on the shelf when the injury first occurred on June 29 in San Francisco. That was 17 days before the team put him on the DL on Monday.

Consider since the injury Votto has struggled going 9 for 35, .257, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 6 BB, .381 OBP.  It is puzzling that the team waited this long for an MRI.  Had they done so immediately they may have been able to shut him down then and have him back in 7-10 days.

Todd Frazier was plugged in at first base on Monday, Votto’s first game out of lineup. The rookie has had a decent bat, but has limited big league experience at the position. Assuming he gets most of the time there, veteran Scott Rolen will need to pick thing up at third base and avoid injuries himself.

The only other option on the big league roster at this point is Miguel Cairo and the veteran has done little this year to boast the confidence of manager Dusty Baker.

The Reds are one game up in a tight NL Central race and they want to stay there GM Walt Jocketty is likely going to have to make a move to add a corner infielder. The team needs some depth on its bench anyway so now is the time to strike.

Three players that make sense for the Reds to pursue include Padres OF/1B Mark Kotsay, Cubs 1B/OF Byran LeHair and Phillies 1B/3B Ty Wigginton.

Kotsay, 36, is likely the best option. He has a .289/.335/.410 batting line in 84 plate appearances and a salary of just $1.25 million. The left-handed hitter could provide the Reds with late-game flexibility at a reasonable cost.

One thing that favors the Reds is their schedule over the next few weeks as 23 of 29 games come against teams that currently boast a losing record:

3 – ARZ
3 – MIL
3 – at Hou
3 – at Col
4 – SD
3 – PIT
3 – at Mil
4 – at ChC
3 – NYM

Look Ahead: San Diego Chargers

14. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Quarterback Phillip Rivers has turned out four straight seasons of at least 4,000 yards passing and 25 touchdowns, including throwing for 4,624 yards and 27 touchdowns a year ago.  After throwing just 22 interceptions in his previous two seasons, the Chargers’ signal caller was picked off 20 times in 2011. He did deliver six 300-yard passing days for owners last season and passed for multiple scores in eight of his 16 contests. Since taking over as the team’s starter in 2006 Rivers has not missed a start.

SCHEDULE
The Chargers get the NFC South and AFC North in addition to their six games vs. the AFC West and will also play the Titans and Jets. The bye comes in Week 7, which is always a good spot as it breaks up the season well. While four of the team’s last six games are at home, the slate is tough as it includes matchups with three playoff teams from a year ago, the Steelers, Bengals, and Ravens.  The Pittsburgh tilt on the road is not a great one to kick off the fantasy playoffs with, but Week 15 brings the Panthers which should be fantasy friendly, before the team travels across country for the Jets in Week 16.

STUD

Entering his third season, the best appears yet to come for running back Ryan Mathews. He averaged 12.4 fantasy points per game in 14 starts during his sophomore campaign and with Mike Tolbert no longer in the mix in San Diego he’ll have little competition for carries in 2012. He broke the 1000-yard mark rushing last season, finishing with 1,061 yards on 222 carries and scored six touchdowns. His 50 catches out of the backfield make him an even more dangerous weapon. Barring injury, Mathews should produce big numbers and be viewed as top five fantasy RB entering the season ahead.

DUD
Ronnie Brown
was signed during the offseason to serve as a backup to Mathews and enters the season as the Chargers’ No. 2 running back.  It remains to be seen how much gas the 30-year old runner has left in the tank, but after a dismal performance in a similar role in 2011 in Philadelphia in which he rushed for just 136 yards and 0 touchdowns on 42 carries we are not holding our breath. While he may not be a bad late-round handcuff for Mathews’ owners on draft day, other owners can find more upside to build their bench elsewhere.

SLEEPER
With so much attention being given to Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham heading into the 2012 fantasy season, Antonio Gates is flying under the radar at the tight end position. Injuries have cost Gates nine games over the past two seasons and durability will remain a concern for the 32-year old tight end. However, with the team lacking a true No. 1 wide receiver many expect Gates to be Rivers’ top target in the passing game. If he can stay healthy Gates will produce elite numbers and is likely to be available 2-3 rounds later than some of the hot names at the position.

NEW ADDITIONS
After watching wideout Vincent Jackson depart to Tampa Bay via free agency, the Chargers signed free agents Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal to help build up its receiving corps. Meachem has made 20 trips to the end zone over the past three years, but has never more than 45 receptions of 722 yards in a single season playing in a Saints’ offense that spread the ball around. Royal has never been able to follow up his 2008 rookie numbers when he caught 91 balls for 980 yards and 5 TD’s, but could have late draft value in PPR formats as the Chargers’ new slot receiver.

POSITION BATTLE
It will be interesting to watch who emerges as the Chargers No. 1 wide receiver heading into the season, Meachem or Malcom Floyd. Meachem is definitely the better deep threat, averaging an impressive 16.1 yards per reception for his career. Floyd benefits from his familiarity with the offense and having played his entire career with Rivers throwing him the ball. After missing nine games the previous two seasons though Floyd will need to show he can stay healthy. Both wideouts have fantasy appeal, but neither should be viewed as anything more than a WR3 or WR4 by fantasy owners.

BENCH BUILDER
Despite showing some flashes as a rookie, Vincent Brown appears to be buried on the Chargers’ depth chart heading into 2012. He finished with 19 catches for 329 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season and should see plenty more targets in 2012. However, barring injury his snaps are going to be modest at best. He’s worth a late-round stab in yearly formats and carries a bit more value in dynasty leagues.
