Fantasy: Mr. Two Timers

4. May 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Two games were rained out yesterday. The Mets and Phillies did not play and the Angels and Yankees were rained out as well. Here is the fallout from those two postponed games as it relates to two-start pitchers.

1. Johan Santana will get two extra days of rest and won't pitch until Wednesday. He is out as a two-start pitcher for week five. John Maine, who was supposed to start on Sunday, will go on Monday, making him a two-start pitcher. He should be categorized as a "Risky Business" pitcher this week.

2. The rainout has given Cole Hamels some extra time to heal as he won't be pitching until Friday. He's only starting once this week. Joe Blanton will start tonight against the Cardinals and is now an extreme "Risky Business" type pitcher.

3. A.J. Burnett will no longer be pitching on Tuesday. That task belongs to Phil Hughes. He'll be going twice this week and should be considered a low-end "Solid Start".

4. Shane Loux will still be pitching twice this week for the Angels even though he got pushed back one day. Anthony Ortega will no longer be going twice, but Joe Saunders will be. He starts Monday and Saturday and is a pretty "Solid Start".

No Recession In Bronx

24. December 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

The Yankees just signed Mark Teixeira to an 8-year, $180 million contract adding to the great Yankee spending spree of 2008. Hank Steinbrenner has begun to blow his family's fortune and spending it like it's Monopoly money. Between AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia and Tex, the Yankees have spent a half BILLION dollars on THREE players. Two of which, only play once every five days.

Add that to Alex Rodriquez's salary as the highest paid player in the history of professional sports and the Yankees have made a mockery of America's past time. And Bud Selig sits by and does nothing.

The Yankees are proving it only takes deep pockets to win and nothing more. It's this kind of absurdity that has soured me and millions more on baseball. It is an absolute joke. Baseball needs an NBA-type salary cap instead of a league of haves and have nots. But that will never happen because Bud Selig does not have the cojones to go after the player's union.

It's December and football is wrapping up and I'm already done with baseball. Sigh. I thought we were in "the worst economic crisis of a generation" according to the media. But nobody told Hank Steinbrenner about this, I guess.

Trade Market: Who's Next?

11. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Our guy Tim Dierkes from MLBTradeRumors.com discusses the pitching market as the trade deadline nears:

  • Justin Duchscherer, Athletics.  Duke is leading all of baseball with a 1.78 ERA in 101 innings.  He is under team control for '09, and Billy Beane wants to wait until after the season to talk extension.  He'd be a very interesting trade chip.
  • Zack Greinke, Royals.  Despite interest, the Royals "remain decidedly uninterested in moving Greinke," according to Ken Rosenthal.
  • Derek Lowe, Dodgers.  The Phillies are interested, but the Dodgers are tied for first place right now.  Trading Lowe makes no sense.
  • Edwin Jackson, Rays.  Jackson is starting to put it together, with a 3.93 ERA in 110 innings.  Trading Jackson or Andy Sonnanstine to make room for rookie David Price seems unlikely.
  • Daniel Cabrera, Orioles.  Cabrera is having his best year, averaging over 6.5 innings per start by sacrificing his strikeout rate.  The O's control him through 2010, so they'll probably opt to hold onto him.
  • Erik Bedard, Mariners.  He's currently on the DL with a stiff shoulder, but the Phillies could still pursue him.  He's under team control through '09, but the Mariners won't get anything close to the package they gave up for him.
  • Gil Meche, Royals.  Meche and the Royals have been very clear - he's staying in Kansas City.
  • Jason Marquis, Cubs.  Marquis is signed at almost $10MM for '09, so the Cubs might have to eat salary to move him.
  • Roy Oswalt, Astros.  The Astros' ace has a full no-trade clause and is expected to stay.  He's signed through 2011.  Oswalt has, however, been scouted by several clubs.
  • Oliver Perez, Mets.  The Mets are only two games out, quieting the rumors for now.
  • Joe Blanton, Athletics.  Trading Blanton as his ERA approaches 5.00 doesn't seem wise.
  • Jarrod Washburn, Mariners.  He's been decent since June. That's a nice development for Lee Pelekoudas, who might be able to unload the $10.35MM owed to Washburn in '09.
  • Kevin Millwood, Rangers.  His groin is bothering him again, plus the Rangers might not be willing to sell.
  • Vicente Padilla, Rangers.  Padilla is on the DL with a neck strain, driving his value down further after a couple of rough starts.
  • A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays.  You know the story with Burnett - enigmatic pitcher with a dangerous opt-out after the season.  Some team seems likely to gamble on him for two months.
  • Brett Myers, Phillies.  Myers does not want to be traded, nor is a deal likely.
  • Paul Byrd, Indians.  He's been awful since the beginning of June, bringing his ERA to 5.47.  Can't be much of a market for him.
  • Homer Bailey, Reds.  His value is down, though the Reds will give him a spot start Sunday.  Wasn't long ago that he was Baseball America's #9 prospect in the game.
  • Bronson Arroyo, Reds.  His ERA is near 6.00 after 19 starts.  It'd be closer to 4.50 if you take out a pair of one-inning thrashings, but is it fair to do that?  He's signed through 2010, and the Phillies might be interested.
  • Livan Hernandez, Twins.  Would an NL team take him on? Livan had a run of four solid starts until the recent Boston beating.  Could be a DFA candidate.
  • Josh Fogg, Reds.  The Reds aren't too keen on Fogg, keeping him in the minors even after he was healthy.  He could be had for a song.

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

25. May 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
STUDS OF THE WEEK
The Reds' Adam Dunn continued to hit a hot bat this week as he clubbed 3 HRs and drove in 5 RBIs while batting .473 to help the Reds turn around their West Coast trip. On the mound, it was the Angels' Jered Weaver that got our attention. The right-hander picked up a pair of victories while posting a 1.35 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and striking out 13 batters in 13 1/3 innings.

DUDS OF THE WEEK

It was a rough week for Mariners' pitcher Carlos Silva as he lost both of his starts while allowing 20 hits, 2 walks in just 10 innings of work. The 10.80 ERA and 2.20 WHIP hurt many owners that were hoping for good things on his two-start week. Despite an impressive start to the season, Diamondbacks' rookie outfielder Justin Upton has fallen on hard times of late. He has mustered just one hit and four walks in his last 26 plate appearences on his way to .047 batting average.
