Bengals GM For A Day

12. March 2013  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

If I were the Bengals GM, instead of sitting back and watching things unfold, and letting the market determine things, I become aggressive, knowing that I’ve got a young offense with glaring holes, and a young, hungry defense on the cusp of greatness. Plus, with the AFC North becoming weaker with the demise of the Steelers and the Super Bowl champs losing a lot already, now is the time. It’s a make or break year for the Bengals, that can determine long-term success, or one-year wonder status for the franchise. It’s that important for this team. With that said, if I’m GM, here’s what I do (assuming I can convince Mike Brown to blow the dust off his wallet and allow it to happen):

SAFETY

Make a run at Ed Reed or Dashon Goldson. Sign one of them, with Reed to a short-term contract and Goldson to a long-term deal. This would give the Bengals the best defensive backfield in football then, and open up the blitz-schemes for Mike Zimmer’s defense.

WIDE RECEIVER

On the offensive side, the Bengals must find a WR free agent to help expand the offense, but who fits Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense, and take pressure off AJ Green. Anquan Boldin would’ve been the exact match, but the Bengals sat on their hands, and should’ve offered up a 5th rounder to trump the Niners deal. Without Boldin, the two names that fit are Julian Edelman or Danario Alexander. Either of these WRs would make nice #2 receivers and extra targets for a young, developing offense. If they swing and miss on these two, could Jerome Simpson be a fall back option? Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

LINEBACKER
The last player to grab is perhaps the most important. And that’s James Harrison. Adding a proven leader, from a division rival, with Super Bowl rings and a veteran toughness, would help the young defense, at a position of weakness. Harrison could help Burfict, Johnson, and the rest of the defense become the hard-working, tough players they need to become. Plus, stealing a key player from the hated Steelers helps further. And with that, I’d let Rey Maualuga walk. He’s too inconsistent and not athletic enough to play in this scheme. But, if they do resign him, make sure Harrison is there as an example of how to be a professional linebacker.

SHORE UP THE STRIPES

The rest of free agency should be used to lock up key Bengals who are going to hit the market like Andre Smith (pivotal), Adam Jones, and Terrence Newman. Whatever non-rookie money that remains goes to long-term negotiated deals with Geno Atkins, Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap (in that order).

Game Balls: Wildcard Weekend

7. January 2013  - Published by Dan Clasgens

We hand out some deserving awards from this weekend’s playoff action…

QB
Joe Flacco, BAL (284 PaYd, 2 PaTD)
– The pending free agent came up in big way for the Ravens as they pulled away from the Colts.  Only two starting quarterbacks had fewer completions than Flacco on Wildcard Weekend, but he definitely got the most out of his 12 completions.

RB
Arian Foster, HOU (32 carries, 140 RuYd, RuTD; 8 catches, 34 ReYd)
– After ending the regular season with some dismal outings, Foster ripped through the Bengals’ rushing defense for one of his best efforts of the season.  Marshawn Lynch was the only other running back to crack the century mark and find the end zone all weekend.

WR
Anquan Boldin, BAL (5 catches, 145 ReYd, ReTD)
– Sunday’s tilt against the Colts was only the fourth game all season in which Boldin crossed the goal line. Add to it a season-high 145 total yards and the veteran turned out to be one of the week’s most pleasant surprises.

TE
Owen Daniels, HOU (9 receptions, 91 ReYd)
– Despite not finding the end zone Daniels rewarded owners that gave him a shot, especially in PPR formats. No player at any position pulled in more than the nine balls Daniels registered (Reggie Wayne also had nine catches) in the win over Cincinnati.

PK
Shayne Graham, HOU (4/4 FG, 1/1 XP)
– Graham led all kickers as he drilled four field goals against his former team. It was the third time in four games that the veteran kicker has had at least three field goals.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Randall Cobb, GB (1 reception, 7 ReYd)
– One week removed from being a scratch due to a knee injury, Cobb was active for the Packers’ playoff opener but he was limited in the team’s rout of the Vikings. He was only targeted twice all night.

Game Balls: Week 6

18. October 2011  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay - 23/41, 303 yards, 2 TD
It's not easy to outplay Drew Brees these days, but that's what Freeman did on Sunday. Sure, Bree threw for more yards but he also had three interceptions while Freeman had none. And more importantly for Freeman, the Bucs beat the Saints and are now tied with them at the top of NFC South. The Tampa defense deserves credit for holding New Orleans to 20 points and Earnest Graham stepped up and rushed for 109 yards. But it is Freeman that is leading this team and needed a good game after an ugly loss last week to the Niners.

QB Honorable Mention - Jay Cutler, Chicago - 21/31, 267 yards, 2 TD (incredible what you can do when you are actually standing up.)

RB Game Ball - Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh - 23 carries, 146 yards, 1 TD
After missing a game with a hamstring injury, Mendenhall was back on the field Sunday and led the Steelers over the Jaguars. It was the kind of game that has been typical of Pittsburgh for years - get a big lead, play solid defense and then just run the ball. The Steelers completed just one pass in the second half while Mendenhall carried the ball 11 times. While it may have been a close win against a weak Jacksonville team, the Steelers look to be getting on track with Mendenhall driving the train.

RB Honorable Mention - Michael Turner, Atlanta - 27 carries, 139 yards, 2 TD (scored five times in last three games.)

WR Game Ball - Anquan Boldin, Baltimore - 8 catches, 132 yards
After catching just one pass last weeke againt the Jets, Boldin had his best game of the year on Sunday. It was his first 100+ performance although he has not scored since week one. Still, it is obvious that the Ravens can do a little bit of everything. Ray Rice ran for 101 yards and Joe Flacco finished the day with 305 passing yards. And of course the Baltimore defense played tough, holding the Texans to just 14 points.

WR Honorable Mention - Marques Colston, New Orleans - 7 catches, 118 yards, 1 TD (no problem coming back from injury.)

THE GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Jim Harbaugh, Coach, San Francisco and Jim Swartz, Coach, Detroit
After a tough fought game between two of the league's top teams, the coaches got into a 'fight'. Okay, it was more of a little shove of a handshake followed by some chasing and shouting while some assistant coaches held back their respective head coaches. Not really much of a fight. And nothing compared to the game played between these two young and very talented teams. But afterwards, it was all anyone wanted to talk about. A few weeks ago the biggest story in the NFL was about Hank Williams Jr. getting fired. Now it's about a couple of coaches yelling at each other. Wait until you see what Madonna does during the Superbowl! Maybe the coaches don't really deserve a stinky sock. Maybe Hank Jr. and Madonna don't either. Maybe I do for thinking that the NFL was actually about playing football.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Brandon Marshall, WR, Miami - 6 catches, 109 yards, 0 ejections (should have been thrown out for dropping passes.)

Fantasy Snapshot: Week 3

23. September 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

FANTASY 101

--Desperation Breeds Opportunity: With many owners sitting at 0-2, now is the time to test their patience.

SETTING YOUR LINEUP

START 'EM
WR Anquan Boldin (@STL) – After a dismal three-catch effort last week versus the Titans, expect the Ravens’ wideout to bounce back on Sunday in St. Louis where he faces a Rams’ secondary that allowed  a league-high13 touchdowns to opposing WR1’s in 2010 and already has ceded a pair of TD’s to top receivers this year.

TE Vernon Davis (@CIN) – With the 49er’s receiving corps decimated by injuries look for even more action for Vernon Davis in the team’s passing game. He gets to face a Bengals’ defense that has struggled to stop over time. Davis could get double-digit targets on Sunday and that makes him a must start.

SIT 'EM
QB Josh Freeman (vs. ATL) – After watching the Bucs’ quarterback toss just two touchdowns over his first two games, I’m not crazy about his matchup with the Falcons. In two matchups against Atlanta during his breakout 2010 campaign Freeman was held to less than 200 yards passing each time and only totaled three touchdowns to go along with three picks.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS – The loss of Jamal Charles for the season to an ACL injury put the nail in the coffin to the Chiefs’ season after just two weeks. Matt Cassel has looked terrible and should be cut in most leagues. I am not excited about either of the team’s running backs left, Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster, and am going to sit Dwayne Bowe until further notice.

FANTASY INFIRMARY
DALLAS COWBOYS
– Tony Romo (ribs/lung), Felix Jones (shoulder), and Dez Bryant (thigh) are all questionable for against Washington and Miles Austin (hamstring) is likely out. With the game on Monday night it’s going to be very tough for owners to risk waiting around for playing decisions. I avoid all Cowboys aside from Jason Witten in Week 3.

QB Michael Vick (concussion) – Vick was a full participant at practice on Thursday and all signs are starting to point to him playing this week versus the Giants barring any setbacks. Owners will want to stay tuned to this situation leading up to game day, but this is clearly good news.

RB Arian Foster (hamstring) – Foster’s hammy continues to be a fantasy headache entering Week 3 of the season. His status is up in the air for this week, but with head coach Gary Kubiak hinting that the team will continue to lean on Ben Tate until Foster is 100 percent healthy Foster’s value is limited.

WR Kenny Britt (hamstring) – Britt, who has been a top five fantasy wideout through two weeks this season, left practice early on Wednesday due to a quad injury. The move is believed to have been cautionary but one that owners will certainly want to stay abreast to the situation on.

BUY LOW CANDIDATES
QB Matt Schaub (HOU)
– With Texans running rapid, Schaub’s numbers are down through two weeks as he has yet to eclipsed 230 yards passing and has only three TD’s and two picks. While he may not be amongst the elite fantasy quarterbacks any more, Schaub is still a low-end QB1 capable of big games.

RB Chris Johnson (TEN) – No high-end player has brought more disappointment to this point than Johnson has to his owners. He’s averaging just 2.1 yards per carry and 4.1 yards per catch through the first two weeks. Still with a favorable schedule ahead and an immense amount of talent I’m still confident that Johnson will finish as a solid fantasy RB1 with huge upside.

WR Reggie Wayne (IND) – There’s no doubt that Wayne, along with the rest of the Colts, has seen a big drop in his fantasy value with Peyton Manning sidelined. However, his value has fallen as far as many think. Wayne has 11 targets and a score already and is going to continue to get looks. Consider him an OK option as a WR2, even without his stud quarterback.

Ravens Land Boldin

6. March 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It has been no secret that the Baltimore Ravens have lacked talent in the passing game for some time, but they made big strides to change that on Friday when they traded for former Pro Bowl wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

The Ravens acquired the three-time Pro Bowl player and a fifth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for their third- and fourth-round picks in next month's draft. That is a far cry from the price tag that the Cardinals were seeking last off-season.

Boldin’s physical style of play will suit the Ravens well.  The team already added free agent Donte Stallworth, who provides a deep threat to stretch the field, earlier this off-season.

"The Ravens just got better," coach John Harbaugh said. "Anquan is a significant addition for us. He fits the personality of our team with the hard-nosed, physical way he plays. We love the way he competes. Our fans will enjoy watching him compete, and his teammates will be excited to have him with us."

The additions are huge to the team’s offense and should only help young quarterback Joe Flacco’s development. The Ravens may have just taken the slight edge as early favorites in the AFC North.

NFL Injury Report

18. September 2009  - Published by Rick Broering

Brian Urlacher - LB - Bears - Bears placed MLB Brian Urlacher (wrist surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Desmond Clark - TE - Bears
- Clark suffered a cracked rib in Sunday's game. He is expected to miss a few weeks.

Jamal Lewis - RB - Browns - Lewis was limited in practice Wednesday due to a neck injury. He will likely play Sunday.

Jerome Harrison - RB - Browns
- Harrison didn't practice for the second straight day thursday with a knee injury. He is listed as probable for Sunday.

James Davis - RB - Browns
- The extent of Davis' shoulder injury is still unclear but he didn't practice Wednesday and is listed as doubtful.

Antonio Bryant - WR
- Bucs - Bryant is now expected to miss Sunday's game unless he improves dramatically over the next two days. He may have forced a comeback before he was fully recovered from his August arthroscopic meniscus surgery.

Anquan Boldin - WR
- Cardinals - Boldin continues to battle his sore hamstring. He is expected to receive more snaps than he did last week but is still not 100%.

Steve Breaston - WR
- Cardinals - Breaston reaggrivated his knee injury in warmups and ended up not playing in the season opener. He returned to a limited practice Thursday. His status is still questionable for Sunday.

LaDainian Tomlinson - RB
- Chargers - LT is listed as questionable and will likely be a gametime decision. He skipped practice again Thursday and his ankle was still in a protective boot.

Matt Cassel - QB - Chiefs - Cassel is likely to play Sunday and seems more comfortable with the idea than coach Todd Haley does. Haley hasn't committed to playing Cassel and has not ruled out playing multiple quarterbacks.

Anthony Gonzalez - WR - Colts
- Gonzalez will not need surgery on his knee but will be out for another month. He is shooting for a week 7 return.

Felix Jones - RB - Cowboys - Jones' thigh looked fine Thursday in practice and should play his usual role Sunday against the Giants.

DeSean Jackson - WR - Eagles
- Jackson was limited early in the week in practice but practiced in full Thursday. He is likely to be OK and play but remember that Kevin Kolb will be his likely QB.

Donovan McNabb - QB - Eagles - McNabb has not practiced yet and despite him begging to play he has not been medically cleared and is listed as doubtful.

Greg Jennings - WR - Packers - Jennings practiced in full on Thursday. Jennings' wrist injury is not serius and he will start against the Bengals Sunday.

Wes Welker - WR - Patriots - Welker's knee is still sore and has limited him in practice all week. He is listed as questionable still, but all signs point to him starting Sunday.

Jeremy Shockey - TE - Saints
- Shockey is still being limited in practice by his ankle, but there's no reason to think it will limit him any more this week than it did last week.

Pierre Thomas - RB - Saints - Thomas is being limited in practice and despite being him saying he's ready to go, he's still listed as questionable and his role on Sunday is uncertain.

Troy Polamalu - DB - Steelers - Polamalu confirmed that he didn't need surgery on his sprained MCL but he is still expected to miss up to six weeks.

Andre Davis - WR - Texans - Davis is feeling better afer sustaining his concussion but he has yet to practice this week. He will likely not play.

Kevin Walter - WR - Texans - Walter practiced in full on Wednesday after being hampered by a hamstring injury. He is expected to start against Tennessee Sunday.

1530 Homer: Show Notes (9/10)

10. September 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Catch me every Thursday at 4:30 p.m. on 1530 Homer (1530AM) w/Mo Egger:

MANAGING THE SITUATION
(Weekly tip to manage your fantasy team)

GO WITH THE GUNS: You drafted players that high for a reason! It’s pretty hard to prognosticate what is going to happen in Week One of the NFL season. Don’t over think it! There’s no reason to bench guys that you drafted with your first few picks before they’ve even played a snap as a member of your fantasy team.

LINE-UP LOCKS
(Who to put in and who to keep out of line-up…not meant to be Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson types)

LOCK ‘EM IN
RB Fred Jackson (at NE) – With Marshawn Lynch serving the first of his three-game suspension expect Fred Jackson to take full advantage of his opportunity. He finished the 2008 season with 136 yards against the Patriots, who have had a high amount of turnover heading into ’09. I am not expecting him to run for as many yards this time around, but 90 yards and a score seem likely.

WR Anthony Gonzalez (vs JCK) – Look for Peyton Manning to establish Gonzalez early and often against a Jaguars’ defense that is a shell of its former self.

LOCK ‘EM OUT
QB Jay Cutler (at GB) – The jury is still out on Cutler and what his fantasy impact will be in the Windy City, but his Week One match-up vs. the Packers on Sunday Night Football at Lambeau Field is one that doesn’t sound appealing. He’s a borderline starting option at best.

TE Vishante Shiancoe (at CLE) – The Browns only allowed 3.5 receptions to tight ends a year ago and tied with three other teams for the fewest touchdowns allowed to the position. I thought Shiancoe was a bit overhyped leading into the season and I am not crazy about his outlook this week.

FANTASY INFIRMARY
(A few key injuries for owners to keep their eyes on)

WR Anquan Boldin (hamstring) – been limited this week, but expecting to play. He’s worth keeping an eye on.

RB Pierre Thomas (knee) – was not able to participate in a full practice on Thursday and it is looking more and more likely he won’t play on Sunday. Reggie Bush will see a heavy load with Mike Bell getting into the mix if he’s out.

QB Matt Cassel (knee) – appears he will try to play despite not being 100 percent. With a trip to Baltimore ahead stay away from the Chiefs’ fantasy options altogether if possible.

WIRE WATCH
(Next week’s hot free agent pick-ups today)

QB Shaun Hill (SF) – scored two or more touchdowns in six of the nine games he played in last season.

RB Justin Forsett (SEA) – will get more looks than people realize in the Seahawk’s running back-by-committee.

TE Anthony Fasano (MIA) – With David Martin out for the season, Fasano will emerge as a legitimate fantasy starting tight end.

GSI Mock Draft: Round Two

29. July 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

After a solid first round things started to get interesting in Round Two of the GSI Mock Draft...

RECAPS: Round One

ROUND TWO
13. BROERING - WR L. Fitzgerald (ARI)
14. SIMON - WR R. Moss (NE)
15. DINSMORE - WR A. Johnson (HOU)
16. BRYANT - RB S. Slaton (HOU)
17. WETZEL - RB C. Portis (WAS)
18. SCHMITT - WR R. Wayne (IND)
19. SIMS - WR C. Johnson (DET)
20. MURDICO - RB B. Jacobs (NYG)
21. ANSELMO - WR A. Boldin (ARI)
22. CLASGENS - QB P. Manning (IND)
23. FISCHER - QB T. Brady (NE)
24. HUMBERT - WR G. Jennings (GB)

POSITION BREAKDOWN: WR (7), RB (3), QB (2)

MY PICK: There are three quarterbacks that I consider Tier 1 candidates - Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady. Brees (who was taken 4th overall) went in the opening round and I was a bit surprised to see Manning and Brady both fall to me with the 22nd overall pick. I was anticipating both of them going sooner and turning to my WR1 here, but I will take a franchise quarterback. Ultimately, Brady has more upside than Manning, but Peyton is the "safer" bet in my eyes. His '08 numbers were a bit disappointing for owners, but too many people disregarded his preseason knee surgery that limited him to just three TD passes in the team's first three contests. I'm not buying into the Harrison departing hurts him theory either. Harrison was a non-factor (no TD's or fewer than 50 yards) in 10 games last season and Manning still averaged 230 yards per game and threw 14 TD's in those outings.

BEST VALUE PICK: Some owners will be a bit gun shy to pull the trigger on Tom Brady, but they shouldn't be. The Patriots were confident enough in his recovery from knee surgery to send backup Matt Cassel to Kansas City. If the veteran signal caller even comes close to sniffing 2007 numbers, he will make the owners that passed him over for a wideout. Outside the top three or four receivers, the difference between No. 5 and No. 12 is marginal. The same can't be said at quarterback.

MOST LIKELY TO DISAPPOINT: Once again it's hard to nit pick some of the top 25 players taken in a fantasy draft, but if I had to pick a guy that could disappoint from this round I go with Steve Slaton. Just by looking at my Cheat Sheet you can see that I am not as high on him as Ron Bryant is as I have ranked as the No. 14 running back at this point. Slaton is solid and has the ability to score on any play. He may not carry a huge workload, but the production is there. However, I likely would have went after a receiver here.  It is a long time before Ron gets to pick again. He could have had a stud quarterback or an elite wideout and instead opted for a running back that most websites don't have in the Top 10. There will be more running backs to choose from in Round Three than there will be QB's and WR's.

FINAL TAKE: A solid round by all. As predicited the run on receivers came and came large. Expect Round Two in your league to be the same way.
