After blocking seven shots in Kentucky’s 79-64 conference season-opening win over South Carolina, Wildcat freshman Anthony Davis continues to march towards rewriting Kentucky record books.
His 4.6 block per game average leads the nation and puts him on pace to shatter the school record for blocks in a season, currently shared by Melvin Turpin and Andre Riddick in the 1982-1983 and 1993-1994 seasons, respectively. Their record stands at 83. With 74 blocks Davis is already well on his way to the throne.
While there is no doubt he’s going to break the season mark over the next couple of games barring injury, it is becoming apparent that Davis already could be considered the greatest blocker in the Wildcats’ storied history.
At his current rate he’ll crack the top 10 career list as a freshman:
Blocks - UK Career Leaders
1. Jamaal Magloire (268)
2. Melvin Turpin (226)
3. Sam Bowie (218)
4. Andre Riddick (212)
5. Perry Stevenson (159)
6. Jules Camara (155)
7. Patrick Patterson (152)
8. Marquis Estill (143)
9. Tayshaun Prince (142)
10. Nazr Mohammed (135)
The real question is going to be is will he stay around long enough to get the career record. A second healthy season would likely ensure his name being etched in the school’s record book.
