Monday QB: Week 7

22. October 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Every week I’ll address some topics that have my head spinning after Sunday’s action:

Adrian Peterson
As if the stat line was impressive enough – 23 carries for 153 yards and a TD – the manner in which Vikings’ RB Adrian Peterson ran the ball on Sunday was breathtaking. You would’ve never guessed that he was still less than a year removed from a major knee surgery. All Day hit the holes with explosiveness, broke tackles convincingly and appeared to be playing with a sense of purpose against a formidable Arizona defense. With the injury apparently behind him I am touting Peterson as the No. 3 overall RB behind Arian Foster in my Midseason Rankings.

Felix Jones

The numbers turned by Cowboys’ running back Felix Jones weren’t terrible, but they were hardly impressive. The Panthers’ defense has proven to be very friendly to fantasy running backs this season and frankly I was expecting bigger things. One problem was the team’s passing attack could never get going, plus Jones was a bit dinged up (go figure). He did manage to catch five passes for 30 yards giving him some value in PPR formats, but 44 yards on 15 carries (2.9 ypc) against Carolina is not going to get it. Hopefully owners didn’t blow too much of their FAAB budget on him.

Brandon Lloyd
Three weeks ago I endorsed trading for the Patriots’ Brandon Lloyd and even acquired him in one of my leagues, claiming he would finish as a top 15 fantasy wideout with top ten upside. Three weeks later I can’t even call him more than just a sketchy WR3 option. He only managed to pull in one of his eight targets in Sunday’s win over the Jets as he finished with just six yards receiving. The good news is that he’s seen eight or more targets in five of the Pats’ seven games. The bad news is he has just one 100-yard game and has made only one trip to the end zone.

Ben Roethlisberger
While I did get the winner right in Sunday night’s Steelers vs. Bengals showdown, the game did not go as I expected. Neither quarterback did much of anything. Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t terrible though. He still managed 278 yards and a touchdown. He is on pace to set a career mark in yardage, but it would be nice to see his TD total go up as he’s now managed to throw just one score in three straight contests. With that in mind he should still be viewed as high-end QB2 option at best and left out of lineups in most weeks.

Trent Richardson
Let the frustration officially begin for Trent Richardson owners. The ultra-talented rookie has been slowed by a rib injury. He tried to play through it on Sunday, only to wind up sitting the entire second half. The result was mediocre fantasy numbers as he finished with eight yards on eight carries in what should have been a huge matchup to exploit versus Indianapolis. The team is hoping to get him back on the field in Week 8, but with him not at 100 percent it becomes a risky proposition. Owners might be better served if the Browns just opted to rest him until he was 100 percent.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

--Tony Romo, Ray Rice, Stevan Ridley, AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Justin Blackmon, Kyle Rudolph

BIGGEST SURPRISES
--Josh Freeman, LaRod Stephens-Howling, Randall Cobb, Jeremy Kerley, Dustin Keller

Game Balls: Week 3

24. September 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Week 3 was wild and crazy, up is down and down is up. Hopefully your fantasy teams are weathering the storm. Here's our Apex Awards Game Balls for Week 3...

QB Game Ball - Ben Roethlisberger, PIT, 384 yards, 4 TDs
Big Ben was the only shining player for the black and gold in a loss to the Raiders. With no running game, Roethlisberger had no choice but to throw the entire game. He completed 36 of 49 passes without an INT.

QB Honorable mention - Matt Schaub, HOU, 290 yards, 4 TDs, Schaub is quietly putting together another stellar season hitting open targets, thanks to a fantastic running game taking pressure off of him.

RB Game Ball - Jamaal Charles, KC, 233 rushing yards, 6 rec 55 yards, 1 rush TD
Kansas City finally figured out that Charles is their best weapon and used him all day. He racked up 288 all purpose yards including 6 catches. Charles is a top fantasy RB at this point and a must start from here on out. Just hope the Chiefs don't screw up his touches.

RB Honorable mention - Mikel Leshoure, DET, 100 rushing yards 1 rush TD, Back from suspension, Leshoure flashed the talent many thought he had. He silenced Kevin Smith, who's now a junk fantasy player. Leshoure adds some dimension to the Lions and is a flex play and fringe starter for most fantasy owners.

TE Game Ball - Heath Miller, PIT, 8 catches, 2 TDs
HEATH!!! That obnoxious chant from Steeler nation when the tight end touches the ball was heard a lot this week. Miller had 8 catches for 60 yards and 2 TDs. He might still be on your waiver wire, if so, go grab him now.

TE Honorable mention - Kyle Rudolph, MIN, 5 catches 36 yards, 2 TDs, I've been singing Rudolph's praises all year, and he didn't let me down this week, with two big red zone targets and conversions.

WR Game Ball - AJ Green, CIN, 9 catches, 183 yards, 1 TD
The day started off great for Green catching a 73-yard TD on the first play from scrimmage. Green exerted his will on the Redskins secondary the rest of the game grabbing balls from the air and making catch after catch. He looked every bit the superstar this week.

WR Honorable mention - Torrey Smith, BAL, 6 catches 127 yards, 2 TDs, everyone knows about the loss he suffered this week. He came out and gutted out a great performance for his fantasy owners and for his brother who had just died. A true pro!

GAME USED SOCK AWARD - Michael Vick, PHI 217 passing yard, 28 rushing yards
Vick got hit all day long and looked confused and flustered by the Arizona Cardinals defense. The Philly fans are already calling for Foles to take over at QB, and if Vick doesn't right the ship, that could happen (but probably not). This is a blip on the radar for Vick, and while he deserves the game used sock, he won't hold onto it all year.

Look Ahead: Pittsburgh Steelers

30. June 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Ben Roethlisberger
eclipsed 4,000 yards passing for just the second time during his career in 2011 while enjoying his third-best passing TD mark (21) ever.  However, he only had five games where produced multiple TD passes and only eclipsed the 300-yard mark passing five times, leaving owners with some pretty mediocre weeks.  Over the team’s final eight games in 2011, Big Ben missed one start and averaged 254 yards per game with 7 PaTD and 7 INT during that span.

SCHEDULE
The Steelers rank in the middle of the pack in their strength of schedule as they tied with three other teams for the 14th toughest slate in the league. Not surprisingly they have five nationally televised games, all coming before Week 12.  Following a Week 4 bye, the Steelers play three games in a span of 14 days in October, including road tilts at Tennessee and Cincinnati. Their fantasy playoff matchups of San Diego, at Dallas, and Cincinnati in Weeks 14-16 are favorable.

STUD
After a very public contract dispute this offseason, Mike Wallace is out to prove he’s worth big money and it could pay big dividends for fantasy owners.  Few receivers in football can stretch the field as well as the Steelers’ big-play receiver which should translate into some monster performances. The lack of consistent production though keeps him out of being a top five or tier one fantasy wideout, but you can’t argue with his final numbers a year ago where he finished with career highs across the board – 72 receptions for 1,193 yards and 8 TD’s.

DUD
A torn ACL in Week 17 cut Rashard Mendenhall’s season short in 2011 and is likely going to cost him significant time in 2012. The veteran running back is expected to start the season on the PUP list and even if he’s able to return it remains to be seen what type of shape he’ll be in. While grabbing him on the cheap in the latter stages of the draft as a stash-away option may not be a bad idea, owners may want to avoid the situation altogether. Consider even before the injury Mendenhall only had two 100-yard games and managed to score in just seven contests.

SLEEPER
It may be hard to justify wide receiver Antonio Brown as a “sleeper”. After all, he finished 2011 with 69 catches for 1,108 yards.  A look at the early drafts recaps suggest he could be one of the best valued players come draft day. He currently is the 25th wideout being taken with an ADP of 55.81. That puts going in mid-to-late Round 5 in most leagues. There’s a ton to suggest though that Brown is primed for an even better 2012. He’s entering the magical third year for a receiver. With the running game in disarray the Steelers are going to throw early and often. It won’t be hard for Brown to build on his two touchdowns from a year ago and if you take numbers from the final 10 weeks a year ago and project them out to a full season it would produce a stat line of 81 catches for 1,354 yards.

NEW ADDITION

Former Chiefs’ head coach Todd Haley replaces Bruce Arians as the team’s offensive coordinator. While there has been plenty of off-season chatter about Roethlisberger’s disappointment with the team for axing Arians, Haley does offer some intrigue for fantasy owners. The Steelers have transitioned from a power-running attack to pass-first football team in recent years and with Mendenhall hobbled Haley is going to keep that trend going.

POSITION BATTLE
With Mendenhall out of the mix for now, Isaac Redman is currently atop the depth chart with Jonathan Dwyer sitting behind him as the team’s RB2.  Redman averaged an impressive 4.4 yards per carry in 2011 and shined in the team’s playoff loss to Denver starting in Mendenhall’s place. He has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and the size to produce at the goalline. While Redman has clear fantasy value (RB3), it will be interesting to see how Dwyer performs in his third season and just how many touches he winds up getting. He’s worth keeping your eyes on.

BENCH BUILDER
Like Brown, fellow wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is entering his third year in the league and will benefit from Haley’s play calling. There’s no been any question surrounding Sanders’ skills set, but durability has been a concern. If he can stay healthy expect his best year yet. With Hines Ward out of the mix following retirement, Sanders will be on the field more frequently and see a steady increase in targets. Don’t get too carried away, but Sanders could prove to be a nice WR4 or WR5 in larger leagues.

UC, Miami Rivalry Dead

3. October 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

After the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Tom Groeschen wrote a great article about the 1986 Miami-UC game in Friday’s paper, I reflected back on my impressions of one of the nation’s oldest college football rivalries.

The Miami-Cincinnati Victory Bell is the oldest current non-conference college football rivalry in the United States. The series ranks fifth on the list of most-played rivalries in college football and is the oldest Division I rivalry west of the Allegheny Mountains. Of the more than 30 rivalries that include at least 89 games, none is older than Miami vs. Cincinnati (MORE HISTORY).

Growing up with my uncle, Tim Rose, as the head coach at Miami University, I had instilled at me at early age the intensity and the history of the rivalry. Long before mega conferences, BCS shenanigans, and there were 57 bowl games winning a game like that would define a season and the teams place in its school’s history.

That '86 game epitomized everything I remember out the rivalry during my childhood. Back-in-forth action. Great entertainment and pure hatered. Even though UC won that thriller, Miami went onto to be No. 8 LSU the following week on their way to the California Bowl, a big accomplishment at that time. During the 70's and 80's Miami dominated the series, but that has changed over the last 15 years. Aside from the Ben Roethlisberger years, Miami has only mustered a couple of wins.

Since UC has joined the Big East things have gotten rather one-sided in the matchup with Bearcats now having won six straight games and seven of the last eight meetings. When you beat your opponent by nearly 30 points a game, the rivalry loses its luster.

Saturday's 27-0 shutout by Cincinnati, only stengthened the argument that this series has lost its luster and I'm not sure it will ever come back.

Postgame Injury Report: Week 4

3. October 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

QUARTERBACKS
Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) - MRI is good news, he should play this week even if not 100%
Chad Henne (MIA) - injured his non-throwing hand, but should return after bye week

RUNNING BACKS
Rashard Mendenahll (PIT) - left with injury to hammy; may need to rest it. Stay tuned
Felix Jones (DAL) - reaggrevated shoulder injury vs. DET, but returned to action.
Tim Hightower (WAS) - shoulder injury opened door for Ryan Torain to steal show.
Ben Tate (HOU) - Groin injury sidelined him. Foster's return hurt his fantasy value
Michael Bush (OAK) - Hurt ankle late in game vs. New Englands; status unclear

WIDE RECEIVERS
Andre Johnson (HOU) - hamstring strain will keep out this week and maybe couple more
Vincent Jackson (SD) - despite being limited with Week 5, leg shouldn't keep him out
Mike Williams (SEA) - hasn't been a factor. Concussion won't help him turn it around

Game Balls: Week 1

13. September 2011  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Cam Newton, Carolina - 24/37, 422 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int, 1 rush TD
No rookie made a bigger impact this weekend than the Panthers new quarterback. Newton set records for a debut performance by a QB with those impressive stats. With continued support from veterans like Steve Smith (178 yards, 2 TD) and Greg Olsen (4 catches, 78 yards) he should continue to put up solid numbers.

QB Honorable Mention - Tom Brady, New England - 32/48, 517 yards, 4 TD, 1 Int (Peyton who????)

RB Game Ball - Ray Rice, Baltimore - 19 carries, 107 yards, 1 TD, 4 catches, 42 yards, 1 TD
The Ravens pounded the Steelers on Sunday and it all began with their stud running back. Rice took the first play from scrimmage 36 yards and Baltimore never looked back. They capped that first drive with a TD catch by Anquan Boldin. Rice went on to score two more times in the first half leaving the Steelers reeling. Other running backs may have had better numbers in week one but no one sent a stronger message against a tougher team than Rice.

RB Honorable mention - Mike Tolbert, San Diego - 12 carries, 35 yards, 1 TD, 9 catches, 58 yards, 2 TD (may be splitting carries but he's the one finding the end zone.)

WR Game Ball - Kenny Britt, Tennessee - 5 catches, 136 yards, 2 TD
With a revolving door at QB for the Titans the last few years, no one may be happier to see veteran Matt Hasselbeck take over than Britt. While the running game was shut down on Sunday, Tennessee took to the air with Britt leading the way. And even when the run gets going and the defense shows up, Britt should continue to flourish. Expect him to have a career year for the Titans.

WR Honorable Mention - Steve Smith, Carolina - 8 catches, 178 yards, 2 TD (just what a rookie QB needs)

TE Game Ball - Aaron Hernandez, New England - 7 catches, 103 yards, 1 TD

On a team that thrives on spreading the ball to as many players as possible, the last thing a defense wants to have to face is a stud TE. But that's what the Patriots have in Hernandez. Actually, the Pats have two awesome TE's with Rob Gronkowski playing on the other end of the line. The problem for fantasy owners is you never know when one star shines over the other. Monday was Hernandez's night - just ask the Dolphins.

TE Honorable Mention - Ed Dickson, Baltimore - 5 catches, 59 yards, 1 TD (filling in big shoes nicely)

THE GAME USED SOCK AWARD
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh - 22/41, 280 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT, 2 FUM

Things could not have gone worse for the Steelers on Sunday. While teams around the league were putting up monster offensive numbers Pittsburgh could barely move the ball against the Ravens. Sure Big Ben finished with 280 passing yards but most of that came late and was much too little. Yes, the Steelers will rebound and Ben will have better days. Heck, last season he didn't even get to play the first couple of games! I wonder if they made him take off those stinky, nasty smelling socks before heading to the 'Gentleman's Club' after the game?

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee - 9 carries, 24 yards, 6 catches, 25 yards (That's with wearing a $56 million pair of socks)

Final Take: Super Bowl XLV

7. February 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Super Bowl XLV is in the books. Here are some final thoughts…

*Aaron Rodgers – The Brett Favre monkey is officially off Aaron Rodgers’ back. He capped off one of the most impressive post-season clips in NFL history by throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns on 25 of 39 passing to lead Green Bay to a 31-25 win over Pittsburgh and earned Super Bowl MVP honors in the process. The victory finally allows Rodgers to step out of Brett Favre’s shadow and should allow the Packers’ bitter fans to get over the divorce and welcome the now-retired (or at least we think) Favre.

*Big Ben Blows It – As impressive as Rodgers was in the game, Roethlisberger was not.  His two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Nick Collins, led to the Steelers finding themselves in a 21-3 first-half hole that proved to be too much to overcome. The two-time Super Bowl champ looked far from super and finished the game with 263 yards and one touchdown on 25-of-40 passing. With a chance to drive Pittsburgh for a game-winning touchdown, he misfired on three straight passes to seal the deal.

*Packers Ultimate Cinderella – Despite being decimated by injuries all season long, fighting off elimination with three straight wins to close the regular season, and being seeded No. 6 in the NFC playoff bracket, the Packers prevailed and beat the odds.  It wasn’t the New York Giants beating the 18-0 New England Patriots, but it was still impressive.

*Black Eyed Peas Rock – I’ve read and heard mixed reviews on the halftime show by the Black Eyed Peas, but count me as one that enjoyed it.  It was refreshing to see an act that actually reached the younger generation back on stage at the big game. Usher was a nice touch. The visual effects were great. The sound and mix could've been better, but overall I was pleased.

*Cameron Diaz can feed me popcorn – Alex Rodriguez is catching all kinds of flack after being caught on camera with his girlfriend, actress Cameron Diaz, feeding him popcorn. Let me go on the record firmly here, you can call me whatever you want but I would let Cameron Diaz feed my anything in front of anybody.

*Dude, Where’s My Seat? – Jerry Jones didn’t get his record attendance as he had hoped, but he is going to get sued. You’ve heard by now about the 400 fans that were left without seats after they bought $800 tickets. The seats that didn’t exist, or at least not after the temporary seats failed fire code. The league has offered a refund of triple the face value of the ticket as well as tickets and accommodations to next year’s Super Bowl. While that is a decent consolidation offering it won’t do Packers or Steelers fans any good unless their team returns.

*Doritos Boast Best Ads – Overall I was terribly disappointed with the Super Bowl commercials this year. I liked the Dog’s Revenge for the Doritos teasing spot and the House Sitter who brought back dogs ashes spots for the popular snack chip. Both ads finished in the top 5 in USA Today’s Ad Meter.

Game Balls: Week 17

2. January 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

QB Game Ball – Tim Tebow, DEN - 16/36 for 205 PaYd, 2 PaTD, 2 INT; 13 carries, 94 RuYd, RuTD
It wasn’t pretty, but Tebow once again posted monster fantasy numbers leading the Broncos’ offense.  There was no better option for those still needing production in Week 17.

QB Honorable Mention – Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - 15/22 for 280 PaYd, 2 PaTD; 4 carries, 24 RuYd (did damage despite sitting out for a quarter plus of action).

RB Game Ball – Arian Foster, HOU - 31 carries, 180 RuYd, 2 RuTD; 2 receptions, 10 ReYd
Foster locked up the NFL rushing title and perhaps the Fantasy MVP award by going out with a bang as the Texans knocked Jacksonville out of playoff contention. If Gary Kubiak stays in Houston as expected next season, Foster will garner serious consideration for the No. 1 overall pick in any format.

RB Honorable Mention – Ryan Mathews, SD - 26 carries, 120 RuYD, 3 RuTD; 3 receptions, 19 ReYd (many will underrate him next year, but Mathews is just now getting healthy after a nagging ankle. I am not writing him off as a bust just yet).

WR Game Ball – Larry Fitzgerald, ARI - 11 receptions, 125 ReYd, 1 ReTD
A week after having his six-year streak of multiple catch games snapped a week ago, Fitzgerald blew up as the Cardinals try to play catch up for most of the game against the 49ers. Despite quarterback questions Fitzgerald remains a WR1 in fantasy leagues moving forward.

WR Honorable Mention – Jerome Simpson, CIN - 12 receptions, 123 ReYd, 1 ReTD (if it weren’t for a couple of fumbles Simpson could have come in over Fitzgerald. Still, two straight weeks in the good part of this column should be a huge boost of confidence for him heading into next season).

TE Game Ball – Rob Gronkowski, NE - 6 receptions, 102 ReYd, 1 ReTD
Gronkowski continued to be a favorite target in the Patriots’ passing game and benefited from Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker and Deion Branch all sitting out as the team already had the AFC’s top seed secured before kickoff. He has high upside in the future.

TE Honorable Mention – Vernon Davis, SF - 3 receptions, 96 ReYd, 1 ReTD (he is capable of producing big numbers, but Davis’ inconsistency makes him a bit of a fantasy headache).

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Joe Flacco, BAL - 14/19 for 125 PaYd, 0 TD, 1 INT
The Ravens needed to win the game to have a shot to grab the AFC North crown and a first-round bye therefore there was no resting Flacco. His owners are likely wishing the Ravens had though. He had one the most mediocre performances of his short career. It marked his third game of the season without throwing a touchdown pass.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention – Peyton Hillis, CLE - 6 carries, 13 RuYd; 1 reception, 3 ReYd (a great year ends badly for the Browns’ back as he averaged just 35.7 yards per game on the ground over that span).

Game Balls: Week 13

6. December 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

Winning NFL picks, odds and power rankings all from our friends at Doc's Sports Service.

RB Game Ball - Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville - 31 carries, 186 yards
The Jaguars proved to the NFL that they deserve to make the playoffs this season. They played tough defense and pounded the ball on offense with MJD. Yes, David Garrard is have a great season and the AFC south has come down a notch in play. But Jacksonville has made the best of their opportunities. And MJD deserves a ton of the credit.

RB Honorable Mention - Jamal Charles, Kansas City - 21 carries, 116 yards (what could he do if he wasn't splitting carries with Jones?)

QB Game Ball - Drew Brees, New Orleans - 24/29, 313 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int
Few offensive players deserve too much credit playing against what has become a woeful Bengals defense, but Take a look at those numbers. Not only 300+ passinf yards but an impressive completion percentage. And of course he drove his team down the field to win the game late. Sure, a crappy defensive lineman helped but in New Orleans they're talking about Brees' hard-count.

QB Honorable Mention - Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh - 22/38, 253 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int (pretty gutsy performance.)

WR Game Ball - Greg Jennings, Green Bay - 6 catches, 122 yards, 2 TD
Not sure where all the numbers will end up after week 17, but Jennings has to be considered one of the top WRs in the league. He now has three straight 100+ yard performances with five touchdowns in those games. That gives him 944 receiving yards on the season with 11 scores. Oh, and he has his team poised for a playoff run.

WR Honorable Mention - Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis - 14 catches, 200 yards, 1 TD (monster game but another loss - he may be sitting at home in January.)

The Game Used Sock Award - Kerry Collins, QB, Tennessee - 14/32, 169 yards, 0 TD, 2 Int
There have been a few cases in the history of the NFL where a team has won despite less than mediocre play from the QB position. The Ravens and Buccaneers from a years ago did well. The Titans have tried their best to mimic the theory, but have now failed. Collins really hasn'r done much better than Vince Young but you wouldn't think it should matter with the running game of Tennessee. And the defense. But they were beat pretty handily by the Jags on Sunday and no one had worse numbers than Collins. How bad do you socks start to smell if you can just hand the ball to Chris Johnson 25 times? The world may never know.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Peyton Manning, Indianapolis - 36/48, 365 yards, 2 TD, 4 Int - (11 picks in the last three games.)
