Monday QB: Week 10

12. November 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Every week I’ll address some topics that have my head spinning after Sunday’s action:

Eli Manning
The season hit a low point for Manning in Sunday’s loss to the Bengals, his third straight game without a TD pass. He’s now gone five straight weeks without a multi-TD pass game while averaging just 212 yards in that span. It’s a far cry from his three two-plus TD days and 315 yards per game average output he displayed in the season’s first five weeks. Hopefully, the bye will help his “tired arm” and give the Giants a chance to regroup on offense. With a remaining schedule ahead that includes GB, @WAS, NO, @ATL, and @BAL I am optimistic he finishes strong.

Michael Vick

Any hopes of owners holding out hope for a turnaround from Vick this season may have been dashed in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys. Not only did the Eagles’ quarterback look awful once again, but he was knocked from the game it was being reported as a “serious concussion”. With the team already leaning towards turning to rookie Nick Foles after a dismal month plus by Vick, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Vick not take another snap this year. It may be a bit premature to write him off, but dumping for a more appealing option makes sense.

Chris Johnson

After being so critical of Johnson through most of the first half of the season, it seems only fitting to toss him a bone while things are going well. Following his 126-yard, one-TD effort on Sunday against the Dolphins, the Titans’ running back has now scored four times in his past three games and has averaged 116 yards per game on the ground over his past. Add in the 15 receptions he’s had during that same span and Johnson has emerged as a legitimate RB1, especially in PPR formats, once again. He has a bye in Week 11, but should be started with confidence going forward.

Chris Ivory
My hunch play in Week 10 was Ivory. Despite the muddled backfield in New Orleans, Ivory seems to run with a purpose. His 56-yard TD scamper showed off the best of his abilities. Still, he finished with just seven carries in the team’s win over previously undefeated Atlanta. In the two games since Sproles went down the once-forgotten running back has carried the ball 17 times for 120 yards and a TD in each game. Interim coach Joe Vitt hinted on Monday that Ivory deserves more looks and we agree. If he gets them Ivory could be a nice boost in the backfield for any fantasy team looking to make a playoff drive.

Calvin Johnson

It only took until Week 10 to do so but Calvin Johnson finally pulled in a Matthew Stafford pass for a TD. His only other touchdown this season came on a Shaun Hill pass. Johnson may have had some health issues linger over the past month or so, but his performance of late has been impressive. Johnson season highs in catches (12) and yards (207) in Week 12 and now has 19 receptions for 336 yards over his past two games and has reemerged as one of the top receivers in fantasy football.

Game Balls: Week 7

22. October 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

The NFL continues its unpredictable ways. Mediocrity and absurdity prevail from week to week in the NFL and therefore in your fantasy leagues. Here’s some players who deserve game balls for their performances this week.

QB:
Drew Brees
, NO, 377 passing yards, 4 TDs: Few things are as predictable and guaranteed as Drew Brees putting up big numbers. He is a fantasy juggernaut and can be counted on every week for fantasy domination.

Josh Freeman, TB, 420 yards, 3 TDs:  Freeman is coming off back-to-back weeks of 300+ passing yards and 3 TD games. It’s time to consider him as a matchup play each week. And after his 420-yard performance this week against the Saints, Freeman is finally living up to some of the hype.

RB:
Chris Johnson
, TEN, 195 rushing yards, 2 TDs: After weeks of my public ridiculing of his lackluster and downright disappointing performances, CJ2K finally emerged in a huge way. Hopefully you listened to my advice last week when I said to be patient with him. Either way, kudos to Johnson on the best running back performance of the week.

Adrian Peterson, MIN, 153 rushing yards, 1 TD: The owners who by taking Peterson early in their drafts have to be pleased. Peterson is back in rare form atop the list of elite running backs.

WR:
Vincent Jackson
, TB, 216 receiving yards, 1 TD: He had a 95-yard catch that actually didn’t result in a TD this week. But the absurd numbers didn’t stop there for Jackson, who set a Tampa record for receiving yards in a game. Jackson has been less than consistent for his owners, but those who started him, reaped the benefits for sure with one of the best fantasy performances of the year.

Santana Moss, WAS, 67 receiving yards, 2 TD: Remember when Santana Moss was a fantasy stud? Yeah, it seemed like forever ago. And believe it or not, Moss resides on 35% of fantasy leagues’ waiver wires. But after this week, where he caught two huge TDs from RG3, Moss might be back in consideration as a fantasy starter.

TE:
Dustin Keller
, NYJ, 7 catches, 93 yards, 1 TD: A New York Jet offensive player on this list? Hard to believe, but Keller’s performance against New England is quite worthy. Keller has had injury issues most of the season, but if he’s finally healthy, and it appears he is, Keller could be a nice fantasy option in coming weeks.

Owen Daniels, HOU, 7 catches, 59 yards, 1 TD: I preach about consistency, and for good reason. And Daniels is the epitome of consistency from the tight end position. He won’t put up huge numbers like the Grahams and Gronks of the world, but he’ll grab 5-8 passes and find the end zone with regularly – just like he did this past week against Baltimore.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Vernon Davis
, SF, zero catches:  If you didn’t watch Thursday Night Football, you might’ve assumed that Davis was injured or inactive. Nope. He played the entire game and accumulated ZERO stats. Goose egg. Zilch. Nada. Delanie freaking Walker even caught a pass for a TD, so what gives? Granted it was a tougher matchup against Seattle, but for a guy who’s played at a top-tier level, Davis has to be a part of a game plan every week. So, for that, he gets a game used sock, and we’ll give the other matching sock to his coach Jim Harbaugh for ignoring their best receiving option in a vital game.

Game Balls: Week 6

15. October 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

One thing we know for sure in the NFL is that anything can happen at any time. In the AFC alone there are only 2 teams with winning records. It may appear like mediocrity rules, but from a fantasy perspective it means that anything can happen. Here’s this week’s Game Balls.

QB
Aaron Rodgers
, GB, 338 yards, 6 TDs – I’d be remiss if I left Rodgers off this list, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mentioned that two of my teams played against Rodgers (of which I still somehow still won both games). One owner foolishly got too cute and benched Rodgers, and missed out on his 6 TD performance. Despite his struggles, Rodgers is still an elite quarterback, and silenced everyone by showing why you cannot bench him – EVER – for any reason, regardless of the matchup.

Robert Griffin III, WAS, 182 passing yards, 1 TD, 138 rushing yards, 2 rush TDs – Back off a concussion, RG3 showed no ill effects of his injury as he was second this week in rushing. His owners hopefully started him, and enjoyed a huge payoff. RG3 is a fantasy stud and must start, every week.

Honorable mention: Russell Wilson, SEA, 293 yards, 3 TDs – Another comeback from the Seattle rookie. This might’ve been his best week yet, and silenced any of his critics (like me) to prove he’s definitely fantasy relevant.

RB
Shonn Greene
, NYJ, 161 rushing yards 3 TDs – Really? That’s what most of us asked when we saw this stat line. The same Shonn Greene who was left for dead and sits on the waiver wire in 40% of leagues. Yes, that Shonn Greene. If you started him, you’re either all-knowing or desperate, and deserve a shout out. Hit me up on Twitter @fantasy_geek and I’ll give you your proper shout out if you started Greene this week on purpose.

Chris Johnson, TEN, 91 rushing yards, 4 catches for 23 yards – There were better performances from other running backs, but since I’ve been hard on CJnoK, I wanted to praise him when it’s deserving. On Thursday night, in what looked like an avoid-at-all-costs matchup against Pittsburgh, Johnson racked up double digit fantasy points. He’s off my used sock list, and I’m moving him back to weekly starter, but I do so very cautiously.

Honorable mention: Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG, 116 yards, 1 TD – Bradshaw ran with authority against a stout 49ers defense. He even found the end zone.

WR
Jordy Nelson
, GB, 9 catches, 121 yards, 3 TDs – Finally Nelson went off, and went off huge. Nelson was a force in Green Bay’s destruction of Houston Sunday night. He caught 9 balls and scored three times for his first multi-TD game of the year.

Wes Welker, NE, 10 catches, 138 yards, 1 TD – Here’s the Wes Welker of the past. 10 catches make him a PPR stud, as always. The touchdown makes him a stud at all levels.

Honorable mention: Vincent Jackson, TB, 4 catches for 66 yards, 2 TDs – Vjax is definitely fantasy relevant again. He’s a guy who is a borderline WR1 at this point and definitely a WR2.

TE
Kyle Rudolph
, MIN, 6 catches 56 yards, 1 TD, 2 pt. conversion – Everyone who’s followed me on Twitter or read me here knows my man love for Rudolph. Rudolph owners have had a hard time committing to starting him every week, but the local boy is showing why you really have to think twice now before benching the Viking tight end.

Jermaine Gresham, CIN, 3 catches, 68 yards, 1 TD – Gresham always showed flashes of talent, but has thus far underperformed. Sunday, against the Browns, the Bengals tight end went off for a long TD catch. Here’s to hoping for many more weeks like this from Gresham.

Honorable mention: Aaron Hernandez, NE, 6 catches for 30, 1 TD – Back from an injury, Hernadez immediately becomes a top 4 tight end again from here on out.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD

Michael Turner
, ATL, 11 rushes for 33 yards – Turner was entering this week having scored at least one TD in the last three games. He was facing the 24th ranked rush defense in the Oakland Raiders. And this is what you do? 11 rushes for 33 yards? Really? So, for this stinker of a performance, please accept this game used sock award for your pathetic performance this week and how you’ve let down any of your owners who considered you a must-start this week. Boo and hiss!

Monday QB: Week 5

8. October 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Every week I’ll address some topics that have my head spinning after Sunday’s action:

Ryan Mathews
Frustrated owners of the Chargers’ RB were rewarded for their patience on Sunday night as Mathews turned in his best game of the season with 18 total touches for 139 total yards and a touchdown. Jackie Battle started the game for San Diego as was a non-factor. The matchup was extremely friendly so the road ahead may be more challenging.  Battle could be a TD vulture at the goal line, but playing at 100 percent Mathews is a borderline top 5 option at running back in any fantasy format.

Chris Johnson
The thought things can get any worse for Johnson owners can no longer be a given. The Titans’ offense is a wreck and it showed again on Sunday.  Johnson had 15 carries and one catch in the game, but only netted 29 total yards and fumbled the ball. It appears that his 157-yard performance in Week 4 was simply a mirage. He has the look of a player that simply doesn’t care and with Tennessee’s schedule being the 8th toughest for a fantasy running back over the next five weeks things are unlikely to change anytime soon.

Tony Gonzalez

Gonzalez has emerged as fantasy football’s top tight end after five weeks of play. He continued his stellar 2012 campaign on Sunday by catching 13 of his 14 targets for 123 yards and a touchdown. It marked the third time in five weeks that Gonzo had double-digit targets. He has five more targets than Jimmy Graham and 13 more targets than Rob Gronkowksi, both who were drafted several rounds earlier this summer, to this point of the season.  The Falcons have the third toughest schedule for tight ends over the next five weeks, but expect the future Hall of Famer to continue to produce at an elite rate.

Steve Smith
After turning in back-to-back 100-yard performances in the first two weeks of the season, the Panthers’ top passing option has failed to hit the mark over the last three games and is still waiting to make his first trip to the endzone this year. Sunday was his worst game yet as he pulled in only four of his 13 targets for 40 yards. Part of the problem stems for the struggles Cam Newton is having during his sophomore season, but Smith himself has failed to make plays at time. View him as decent WR2 option moving forward, but his stock is dropping.

Michael Vick
Each week it becomes more evident that Vick isn’t going to recapture his 2010 form that had him as one of fantasy football’s top producers. He fumbled the ball four times on Sunday vs. Pittsburgh and even though he threw for a pair of touchdowns he only passed for 175 yards. The Eagles’ signal caller remains an option each week at quarterback, but he’s no longer an automatic start and currently sits outside of our top players at the position until further notice.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

Game Balls: Week 5

8. October 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Records were broken and hearts were broken this week in the NFL. Hopefully you were on the record-breaking side of the ball instead of the heart-breaking side. Here are this week's game balls.

QB
Drew Brees
, NO - 370 yards passing, 4 TDs - You can't talk about Week 5 without mentioning Drew Brees who broke Johnny Unitas' record for consecutive games with a TD. Brees got his TD early to break Johnny U's record, but kept going throwing 4 TDs and nearly 400 yards. Brees is, what he always is, a fantasy juggernaut.

Alex Smith, SF - 303 yards, 3 TDs - Under boring in the fantasy dictionary is Alex Smith's picture. He's rarely ever started by most fantasy owners, but those who did play him this week got quite a performance with 300 yards and 3 TDs. He even scrambled for an additional 49 yards to add to his point total.

Honorable mention: Andrew Luck, IND, 362 passing yards, 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD - Luck is proving his value week after week, as he gets more comfortable in his NFL skin.

RB
Ryan Matthews
, SD - 80 rushing yards, 1 TD, 6 catches 59 yards - Hopefully Matthews performance this week puts this Jackie Battle nonsense to rest. Matthews is, without a doubt, the most talented player for the Chargers, and needs the ball in his hands. Norv Turner may have finally figured this out, as Matthews had a statistically solid week, especially in PPR leagues.

Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG - 200 rush yards, 1 TD - Despite one costly fumble, Bradshaw put up huge numbers against a depleted Browns defense. Bradshaw even caught 4 passes for 29 yards.

Honorable mention: Rahsard Mendenhall, PIT, 81 yards, 1 TD - Welcome back to the NFL Rahsard Mendenhall! He scored a TD early and even caught two passes to add to his point total.

WR
Marques Colston
, NO - 9 catches, 131 yards, 3 TDs - Three TDs for Colston lifts him as the top of a bunch of great wide receiver performances. Colston's owners who stayed patient with him are rewarded greatly with his stud-like performance last night.

Reggie Wayne, IND - 13 catches for 212 yards and a TD - In an emotionally-charged game, Wayne put up a career day. In PPR formats, Wayne was phenomenal. Heck, in all formats, the Colts receiver was superb.

Honorable mention: Victor Cruz, NYG, 5 for 50 yards, 3 TDs - This just in, Victor Cruz is pretty darn good.

TE
Tony Gonzalez
, ATL - 13 catches for 123 yards and a TD - Gonzalez was passed up by many to get the younger, sexier players at the tight end position. Those who waited have been rewarded with phenomenal production from the future hall of famer. This week, Gonzalez put up big fantasy numbers for his patient owners.

Vernon Davis, SF - 5 catches, 108 yards - The only thing that could've made his performance better would've been a TD, but Davis has been solid and consisten all year.

Honorable mention: Jared Cook, TEN, 5 catches, 37 yards 1 TD - The lone fantasy highlight for the Titans was Cook, who has been very consistent for his owners all year.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Chris Johnson
, TEN, 29 total yards, fumble lost - He's getting quite a collection of stinky socks, but, well, he's earned each of them. This first-round selection is killing his owners and leaves them in a quandary. They can't trade him (no return value), but they have to bench him, unless they have no other options. So, as a CJ NoK owner myself, I graciously present him with yet another, game-used sock and urge him to get it going. PLEASE!

Game Balls: Week 1

9. September 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

It’s time to hand out our Game Balls for this week brought to you by Apex Awards

QB Game Ball - Matt Ryan - 23/31 299 yards, 3 TDs, 25 rush yards, 1 Rush TD

Many experts predicted a breakout year for Matty Ice, and if his performance in the opening week is any hint, this could be his breakout year. Ryan did it all, and didn't even throw a pick. He threw, at will, it seemed, for three TDs, two to Julio Jones, and even ran one too. He absolutely abused the Kansas City defense.

QB Honorable mention - Robert Griffin III, 19/26 320 yards, 2 TDs (good for a rookie record, and RG3 just may be the real deal).

RB Game Ball - Steven Ridley, 125 rush yards, 1 TD, 2 catches for 27 yards
Lots of choices in this category as several RBs had stellar performances. But Ridley looks like another weapon for Bill Belichick. The Patriots running back got almost all the carries, and made the most of them. This looks like Ridley's job firmly, and this looks like the normal type of fantasy production for Ridley.

RB Honorable mention - Adrian Peterson, 84 yards and 2 TDs. Most were skeptical of what to expect from AP, but he proved everyone wrong who didn't start him.

WR Game Ball - Brandon Marshall, 9 catches for 119 yards, 1 TD
Reunited and it feels so good. That's how Marshall has to feel about being in a Bears uniform with Jay Cutler. Marshall is a must-start fantasy option from here on out.

WR Honorable mention - Stephen Hill, 5 catches, 89 yards, 2 TDs - If you started this rookie on your team, you should probably buy a lottery ticket, and give me your email as I'll look for your fantasy advice next week.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
RB - Chris Johnson - Tennessee - 11 rushes for 4 yards

A lot of people took CJ2K as the fourth RB off the board in their drafts. He was predicted to have a breakout year. And then today he does this - 4 yards. FOUR!! Owners of Johnson (I refuse to call him CJ2K any longer) who have him in PPR leagues at least got some redemption as he did manage 6 catches for 47 yards. But still, for someone taken so high, and with so much expected from him, for him to have had such a pathetic performance against a weak opponent in the Patriots, is well, worthy of a big, stinky game-used sock.

Look Ahead: Tennessee Titans

5. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Over the past two seasons wide receiver Kenny Britt has missed 17 games due to injury, including 13 last year after suffering an ACL injury. While his durability has been a concern there’s never been a doubt around his talent. Britt has found his way into the end zone 15 times in 31 career games and has averaged over 70 yards per contest during his limited action the past two campaigns. Before going down early in Week 3 in 2011, Britt opened eyes with 14 catches for 271 yards and 3 TD’s during the first two weeks. When healthy, Britt has top 15 fantasy wideout potential.

SCHEDULE
The Titans square off with four playoff teams from 2011 in its first six games of 2012. The bye week doesn’t come to Week 11 which will keep owners from worrying too much about covering the bye week for their Titans’ players on draft night. Tennessee will play six of the 10 teams that allowed the fewest points to fantasy running backs in 2011, including the Texans (No. 2) twice. The tough schedule is even tougher come fantasy playoff time with Houston in Week 13, the Jets in Week 15 and at the Packers in Week 16.

STUD
Chris Johnson
was one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy football for much of 2011. He followed up the NFL lockout by holding out, missing nearly the entire preseason. It resulted in him being out of shape and unprepared. While he did recover to post his fourth straight 1000-yard campaign, Johnson’s touchdown total dipped from 28 total scores the previous two seasons to just four scores a year ago. A strong finish to the year coupled with a strong commitment to the team’s offseason program leave room for optimism entering 2012.

DUD
After scoring five times during an eight-game stretch Damian Williams popped up on fantasy owners radar midway through the 2011 campaign and proved to be a dependable option at times at a WR3 or flex option in deeper leagues. Entering his third season would suggest that he still has some upside. However, with Britt returning from an injury and the team investing a first-round pick in another wideout it’s hard to imagine Williams carrying much fantasy value entering 2012 unless someone else goes down.

SLEEPER
One of favorite sleepers from a year ago, Jared Cook got off to a slow start before a monster finish in 2011. During Weeks 15 and 16, key weeks in most fantasy leagues, Cook rewarded those that exercised patience by grabbing 17 balls for 273 yards and a touchdown.  The talent is there, but for Cook to emerge as a fantasy option he needs to find more consistency. He’s not a bad option for those owners that opt to wait around until the late rounds to worry about a tight end, but he’s far from a proven commodity.

NEW ADDITION
The explosive Kendall Wright can stretch defenses with the best of them and that was something that the Titans’ passing attack was desperately missing when they spent a first-round pick on him in April’s draft. He figures to slide into the slot right out of the gate for the Titans. He’ll need to pick up on the offense quickly to make an immediate impact and will benefit greatly if Britt is completely healthy and Cook can keep defenses honest over the middle. He’s a nice late-round pick in yearly leagues and much more in dynasty formats.

POSITION BATTLE

Veteran Matt Hasselbeck enjoyed a decent first season in the Music City, but many close to the organization favor second-year slinger Jake Locker as the team’s quarterback. Expect Hasselbeck to start the season as the starter, yet it is only a matter of time before the Titans get an extended look at last year’s first-round selection. Locker has even more fantasy appeal when you consider his ability to run the football. Hasselbeck is a risky option even as a backup as he may not be starting by time you need him as a bye-week filler. Locker is worth stashing.

BENCH BUILDER
With so much attention being shined on Britt’s return to health and the arrival of Wright to the team, Nate Washington is likely to fall through the cracks in most fantasy drafts. While he’s not likely to match 2011’s career-high numbers (74 receptions for 1,023 yards and 7 TD’s), owners need to remember that he averaged 44 catches for 628 yards and six TD’s per years during his previous two seasons as a Titan. Even with his targets going down Washington will make for a solid backup WR on nearly any roster.
