Fantasy: QB Rumblings

11. December 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Here are some random QB rumblings as we turn the page to Week 14...

Robert Griffin III
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III’s status is up in the air for Week 15’s game against the Browns. The rookie suffered a mild sprain of his right LCL in Sunday’s win over the Ravens. He is officially listed as day-to-day and will certainly be limited in practice throughout the upcoming week. While its good news that there is no structural damage to knee around surrounding areas, owners will need to monitor his status before making a decision. RGIII tallied 246 yards and a TD through the air and rushed for an additional 34 yards before exiting late in regulation.

Jay Cutler
Signs are pointing to a return to the lineup in Week 15 for Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler, who was forced from Sunday’s loss at Minnesota due to a neck injury. Head coach Lovie Smith said on Monday that Cutler is dealing with "normal soreness you'd have from a stiff neck." Even if he suits up Cutler is not an appealing fantasy option in his upcoming matchup against the Packers. He completed 11 of 27 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown while being intercepted four times in Week 2’s meeting with his divisional foes in Green Bay. Cutler is not a guy you want to roll with in a fantasy playoff matchup.

Eli Manning

Eli Manning threw for a season-high four touchdowns in the Giants’ victory over the Saints on Sunday. It marked his seventh 4-TD game of his career. After going without a TD pass in three straight games, Manning has now tossed for eight passing scores in his three contests since the team’s Week 11 bye. The Giants’ signal caller was picked off twice and now has 13 interceptions on the season. He remains a mid-range QB1 going into Week 15’s trip to Atlanta in a game that promise to have points put on the scoreboard.

Josh Freeman

Tampa Bay suffered a tough loss at home to a Philadelphia team that had dropped nine straight games. Quarterback Josh Freeman was unable to take advantage of a promising matchup as he threw for just 189 yards. However, the Bucs’ signal caller still tossed a pair of touchdown passes. It marked the eighth time in nine weeks that Freeman has thrown for multiple scores. Look for even bigger things in Week 15’s trip to New Orleans as he faces a Saints’ secondary that has ceded a league-high 27 passing touchdowns on the season.

Andy Dalton
Andy Dalton continued his late-season cool off in the Bengals’ loss to the Cowboys in Week 14. The signal caller finished the game with 206 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 20-of-33 passing. He’s only averaging 208 yards per game over his last seven contests and has thrown for just one score in four of those outings. While he was a viable starting option during bye weeks, Dalton cannot be trusted as a strong starting option during the fantasy playoffs as his upside is just too limited.

Joe Flacco
A week after quarterback Joe Flacco publicly spoke out about the team’s play-calling, the Ravens fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on Monday. Former Colts’ head coach and current QB coach Jim Caldwell, who has never called a play at this level, will take over the position for the remaining of the season. Flacco should get to have a bit more of a say in the offense under Caldwell and will likely be able to run a bit more no-huddle offense. Flacco is worth a roster spot, but not a QB1 at the moment.

Jake Locker

Titans’ quarterback Jake Locker continued to show promise in Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis, but it was not enough to make up for his mistakes. He was picked off twice, including one that was returned for touchdown, and finished with 262 yards and a touchdown. He’s now thrown seven interceptions over the past three games. With a new offensive coordinator coming in and new system to follow, Locker’s learning curve will be large again next season. Owners in keeper leagues should temper their expectations with the second-year signal caller.

Monday QB: Week 10

12. November 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Every week I’ll address some topics that have my head spinning after Sunday’s action:

Eli Manning
The season hit a low point for Manning in Sunday’s loss to the Bengals, his third straight game without a TD pass. He’s now gone five straight weeks without a multi-TD pass game while averaging just 212 yards in that span. It’s a far cry from his three two-plus TD days and 315 yards per game average output he displayed in the season’s first five weeks. Hopefully, the bye will help his “tired arm” and give the Giants a chance to regroup on offense. With a remaining schedule ahead that includes GB, @WAS, NO, @ATL, and @BAL I am optimistic he finishes strong.

Michael Vick

Any hopes of owners holding out hope for a turnaround from Vick this season may have been dashed in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys. Not only did the Eagles’ quarterback look awful once again, but he was knocked from the game it was being reported as a “serious concussion”. With the team already leaning towards turning to rookie Nick Foles after a dismal month plus by Vick, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Vick not take another snap this year. It may be a bit premature to write him off, but dumping for a more appealing option makes sense.

Chris Johnson

After being so critical of Johnson through most of the first half of the season, it seems only fitting to toss him a bone while things are going well. Following his 126-yard, one-TD effort on Sunday against the Dolphins, the Titans’ running back has now scored four times in his past three games and has averaged 116 yards per game on the ground over his past. Add in the 15 receptions he’s had during that same span and Johnson has emerged as a legitimate RB1, especially in PPR formats, once again. He has a bye in Week 11, but should be started with confidence going forward.

Chris Ivory
My hunch play in Week 10 was Ivory. Despite the muddled backfield in New Orleans, Ivory seems to run with a purpose. His 56-yard TD scamper showed off the best of his abilities. Still, he finished with just seven carries in the team’s win over previously undefeated Atlanta. In the two games since Sproles went down the once-forgotten running back has carried the ball 17 times for 120 yards and a TD in each game. Interim coach Joe Vitt hinted on Monday that Ivory deserves more looks and we agree. If he gets them Ivory could be a nice boost in the backfield for any fantasy team looking to make a playoff drive.

Calvin Johnson

It only took until Week 10 to do so but Calvin Johnson finally pulled in a Matthew Stafford pass for a TD. His only other touchdown this season came on a Shaun Hill pass. Johnson may have had some health issues linger over the past month or so, but his performance of late has been impressive. Johnson season highs in catches (12) and yards (207) in Week 12 and now has 19 receptions for 336 yards over his past two games and has reemerged as one of the top receivers in fantasy football.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS
--Tony Romo, Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Vincent Jackson, Brandon Lloyd, Vernon Davis

BIGGEST SURPRISES
-- Joe Flacco, Steven Jackson, Danny Woodhead, Danario Alexander, Donald Jones, Dennis Pitta

Game Balls: Week 10

12. November 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Don’t get defensive or anything, but some of the best scorers in fantasy football it seems are coming from the other side of the football. Defenses rule in 2012, and if you’re fortunate enough to grab some of these high-scoring defenses, well you’re probably in playoff position. With that being said, here’s the game ball recipients for Week 10 from the offensive side of the ball.

QB
Joe Flacco
, BAL, 341 yards, 3 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD – I’ve been very critical (and rightfully so) of the Ravens QB. He’s wildly inconsistent, but in Week 10 he exploited a weak Raiders secondary for 4 total TDs. Many of his owners likely didn’t reap the benefits however, since he probably was on the bench due to his inconsistency.

Andy Dalton, CIN, 199 passing yards, 4 TDs – The biggest stat for Dalton was ZERO interceptions as the Bengals offense clicked on all cylinders and Dalton showed he can be a viable fantasy quarterback.

RB
Fred Jackson
, BUF, 80 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 4 catches for 35 yards – Please allow me to toot my own horn here. I loved Fred Jackson this week. So much that in one league I traded for him and then started him, which paid off big for me. All the talk went to CJ Spiller, and Jackson went mostly unnoticed. So, is this a sign of Jackson now reemerging in the Buffalo backfield? That’s hard to say. I just hope you listened to the Fantasy Geek and played Jackson this week.

Stephen Jackson, SL, 101 rushing yards, 1 TD – Rumors of Stephen Jackson’s demise were greatly exaggerated. While the matchup for Jackson looked bad (on paper) against the 49ers, he managed to show flashes of his one-time greatness with a solid performance, which included 2 catches for 26 yards in addition to a 100+ yard rushing performance.

WR
Calvin Johnson
, DET, 207 yards, 1 TD – What Madden Curse? Calvin finally thrilled his owners with a stat line that was familiar to him last season. So, is this a sign of things to come for Megatron?

Golden Tate, SEA, 51 yards receiving, 1 TD, 1 passing TD – Golden Tate is looking like one of those bench players that is going to make owners have to think twice about not starting him. Tate is a red zone machine and this week he even threw a TD pass.

TE
Tony Gonzalez
, ATL, 11 catches 122 yards, 2 TDs – I had a chance to acquire Gonzalez and opted not to. Then I played that owner this week, and lost. Typical, right? Gonzalez is a fantasy force and other than Gronk and Graham, there are no better tight end options in the game. Heck, Gonzalez is a must start as a flex option even outscoring many WRs too.

Greg Olsen, CAR, 9 catches, 102 yards, 2 TDs – Again, I will admit when I’m wrong. On Twitter I recommended an Olsen owner steer clear of him because he had just been so underperforming all year. I was wrong, in a big way. Olsen was a fantasy stud this week with 9 catches and 100+ yards and two scores. Now, where has that been the rest of the year? Olsen hadn’t scored a TD since September and didn’t top 100 yards all year.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD

Eli Manning
, NYG, 215 yards passing, 2 INTs, 1 Fumble – He won this award last week, and he’s back for an encore this week. Manning had a great matchup against a vulnerable Bengals secondary, and absolutely stunk it up (again). It’s time to be concerned now and maybe slide Eli to your bench until the Giants pull out of this slump. Until then Eli, here’s now a matching pair of Game Used Socks. Enjoy.

Game Balls: Week 9

5. November 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

We've officially reached the halfway point of the NFL season, and more than halfway for most fantasy leagues. This week saw two rookie records fall, and without a doubt, 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the rookie. A few of those rookies receive this week’s game balls.

QB
Andrew Luck
, IND, 433 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs – Luck broke the single game passing yard record for rookies and is on pace to shatter the total yardage record for rookies too. Luck looks so natural under center that it’s hard to believe he actually is a rookie. For those owners who have Luck in a dynasty format, well, congrats, he’s gonna be something special for a long time.

Carson Palmer, OAK, 414 yards, 4 TDs, 3 INTs – It pains me to include Palmer on this list, as I’ve been critical of Palmer for years. And if you started Palmer on your fantasy team, you enjoyed a statistic-rich performance. A lot of those yards were junk time, as were the TDs, but they still count. And you can’t deny 400+ yards as a quality fantasy performance.

RB
Doug Martin
, TB, 251 yards, 4 TDs, 4 catches for 21 yards – Another rookie record, as Martin ran three TDs of 40+ yards en route to one of the top 10 best fantasy performances by a running back in the history of fantasy football. And did I mention that he’s a rookie?

Adrian Peterson, MIN, 182 yards, 2 TDs, 3 catches – I’m not convinced that Peterson is actually human. Most athletes coming back from a major knee injury aren’t nearly this productive. Peterson leads the league in rushing yards and has not missed a single beat. Fantasy owners who took the risk on him have found their investment paying off big time.

WR
Brandon Marshall
, CHI, 9 catches 122 yards, 3 TDs – Everyone expected Marshall reunion with Jay Cutler to pay dividends, but this week was beyond those expectations. 3 TDs for the Bears receiver means fantasy gold for his owners.

T.Y Hilton, IND, 6 catches, 102 yards, 1 TD – Sticking with the rookie theme, Hilton made his presence known as Andrew Luck targeted him 7 times and Hilton caught his second TD of the year, but easily had his best performance of his young NFL career.

TE
Brandon Myers
, OAK, 8 catches, 59 yards 2 TDs – Myers is quietly becoming a viable fantasy option at the tight end position. This week, in both PPR and non-PPR formats, he was valuable.

Jermaine Gresham, CIN, 6 catches, 108 yards – The only thing that could’ve made his performance better would’ve been a trip to the end zone, but the Bengals tight end was a beast making athletic catches and showing off the prowess that got him drafted in the first round by the Bengals.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD

Eli Manning
, NYG, 125 yards passing, 0 TDs, 1 INT – Nobody has been a bigger Eli fan than me. I’m still a fan. And Eli still has value for his owners. This was a blip on the radar, I believe, an enigma, a fantasy mirage so to speak. But, come on already. 125 yards passing and no TDs? That is just unacceptable. And so, justifiably, he lands here and receives his first game used sock award. I don’t anticipate him being here again this year though, especially with the Bengals as his next opponent.

Game Balls: Week 2

17. September 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

It’s time to hand out our Game Balls for this week brought to you by Apex Awards

QB Game Ball - Robert Griffin III, WAS - 206 passing yards, 1 TD, 82 rushing yards, 2 rush TDs

It's time to consider RG3 as QB1 every week now. Yes, it's still early, but with his accuracy and the way he handles his offense and then throws in all those rushing TDs, well, he's a top 10 QB now. For those who drafted him as a backup, you now have decisions to make, but that's a good problem to have.

QB Honorable mention -Eli Manning, 510 passing yards, 3 TDs, 3 INTs. It's those 3 INTs that keep him from the top honor, but anyway who's read me here on GSI or followed me on Twitter (@wheelseditor), knows my man love for Eli.

RB Game Ball - Reggie Bush, MIA - 172 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 3 rec for 25 yards
When Daniel Thomas went inactive, it was expected that Bush would see a bump in his touches, but this type of performance was great for his owners, and heartbreaking for those who had to go against him (like me).

RB Honorable mention - CJ Spiller, BUF - 15 rushes, 123 yards, 2 TDs, 3 rec 47 yards. Hopefully Fred Jackson owners handcuffed Spiller and aren't missing Jackson at all.

WR Game Ball - Dwayne Bowe, KC - 8 catches, 102 yards, 2 TDs
Bowe is known as an inconsistent WR, but proved his worth as a WR1 with this type of performance.

WR Honorable mention - Danny Amendola, STL - 15 catches, 160 yards, 1 TD. In a PPR format Amendola was inspiring and if you started him, I tip my hat to you.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
RB - Darren McFadden, OAK - 11 rushes for 22 yards, 2 catches for 19 yards

Disgusting. It seems McFadden has a case of the Chris Johnsons. As in, letting down his fantasy owners in a nauseating way. McFadden's rushing yards are down big time, thus far, but last week redeemed it with a lot of catches. This week, he had all of 2 catches and thus gets the game-used sock award, deservingly so.

Look Ahead: New York Giants

14. August 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Eli Manning
posted career highs in passing yards (4,933) and yards per attempt (8.38) a year ago on his way to his third consecutive 4,000-yard season. He’s averaged 29 TD’s during that span. Manning took better care of the football in 2011 as he watched his interceptions drop from 25 in 2010 to 16 during his run to a second Super Bowl ring. The Giants’ signal caller is a solid QB option and one of the top selections in fantasy quarterbacks second tiers.

SCHEDULE
The 2012 slate is full of challenges for the defending Super Bowl champs. For starters, two of their first three games come in the middle of the week which will make it difficult to get into an early rhythm. Playing in the NFC East is always a daunting task and drawing the NFC South and the AFC North only makes the grind harder.  New York faces seven teams that made the playoffs a year ago, including three of the four teams who earned byes a year ago.

STUDS
It’s a rare that one team can boast two top 10 fantasy wideouts, but the Giants’ Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz may prove to be the exception. Nicks, who broke a bone in his foot during May’s OTA’s, is legitimate candidate to be a top 5 fantasy receiver after eclipsing 75 catches and 1,000 yards for the second straight year with 18 TD’s over his past 28 contests. Cruz emerged as one of fantasy football’s top waiver wire pickups in 2011, finishing third in the NFL in receiving yards (1,536), while ranking among the top 10 in receptions (82) and TD receptions (9).

DUD
Even though the Giants’ offense is a high-powered attack, place kicker Lawrence Tynes has yet to emerge as a consistent fantasy option. He’s never kicked more than 27 field goals in a season and connected on just 19 of 24 attempts a year ago. He struggles on long-range kicks, costing owners who get bonus points based on the distance of the field goal. Throw in the cold weather games late in the year that he’ll likely be playing in and Tynes is nothing more than a bye-week filler.

SLEEPER
With a current ADP of 39.63 (16th RB off board), Ahmad Bradshaw is falling into the fourth round of many drafts. However, with the departure of Brandon Jacobs his final numbers in 2012 could prove to be much more valuable. Bradshaw totaled 926 yards and scored a career-best 11 touchdowns a year ago despite being limited to playing parts of just 12 games due to injury. If Bradshaw can avoid the injury bug, he should be able to take full advantage of being the team’s unquestioned No. 1 RB.

NEW ADDITION
After watching Mario Manningham depart via free agency, New York moved to add depth to its receiving corps by nabbing Rueben Randle out of LSU with its second-round pick in April’s draft. Widely considered one of the most NFL-ready wide receivers coming out of college, Randle could make an immediate impact. He’ll have to beat out Domenik Hixon and Jerrel Jernigan for snaps and might be inconsistent early in his career, but the rookie wideout has a ton of upside.

POSITION BATTLE
Veteran DJ Ware is currently listed as the No. 2 running back on the team’s depth chart, but rookie David Wilson has more fantasy appeal and is the better option as a handcuff to Bradshaw. Ware has been part of the team for five years and has great familiarity with the offense. However, Wilson possesses a much greater skill set and is greatly undervalued heading into drafts. While Ware could be worth a late-round stab, Wilson could be a nice grab in the mid-rounds of a draft and even higher in dynasty/keeper leagues.

BENCH BUILDER
Over the past two seasons Kevin Boss and Jake Ballard have both emerged as weapons in the Giants’ passing game at the tight end position. With Boss long gone and Ballard recovering from a knee injury, newcomer Martellus Bennett could be the next in line. The former second-round pick by the Cowboys never really got a chance to shine in Dallas playing behind Jason Witten, but snaps won’t be a problem in New York. He’s worth a look as a late-round TE2 option in deeper formats.

5 Reasons Giants Win

2. February 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

DEFENSIVE FRONT – There’s no questions a big part of the Giants winning six of their last seven contests has been the play of their defensive front since the unit has gotten fully healthy. The key in slowing down Tom Brady is applying pressure and New York is equipped to that as any team in the league.

RUNNING GAME – Unlike New England, the Giants’ offense is not one-dimensional. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacbos are running on all cylinders right now and provide a perfect 1-2 punch to challenge a mediocre Patriots defense.

VICTOR CRUZ – This guy has been simply amazing. Along with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, Cruz has caused matchups for most defenses. With New England likely to match wide receiver turned DB Julian Edelman up against him on many snaps, Cruz could be saving his best performance for last.

ELI MANNING – Many in the Hoosier State dreamed of Manning Super Bowl in Indy and they’ve got one. Just not the one they were hoping for. Eli will have a chance to surpass his older brother Peyton in the house that he built. I couldn’t think of a better way to top off a career season.

GRONKOWSKI INJURY – The Pats’ best offensive weapon, tight end Rob Gronkowski, enters the game with an ankle injury. If he’s not able to perform at the same level in which he played at throughout his 20-touchdown season the Giants will gain a big advantage.
