Around the NFL

6. August 2009  - Published by Rick Broering

Let's take a look at some of the latest headlines from around the NFL...

Crabtree Prepared to Sit Out Season - Unsigned first-round pick Michael Crabtree's cousin and adviser, David Wells, confirmed Profootballtalk.com's report that Crabtree is prepared to sit out all of 2009 if the 49ers don't meet his contract demands. It was under different circumstances, but this idea worked out terribly for Mike Williams in 2004-05. "We are prepared to do it," Wells said.  CONTINUE READING

Robiskie Impressing in Camp - After observing Browns camp this week, NFL.com's Pat Kirwan predicts that rookie receiver Brian Robiskie will "make a major contribution this season."
Robiskie is effective against zone defense with soft hands, good route running skills, and his understanding of the soft spots in coverage. CONTINUE READING

Anderson Making Bid for Starting Job - According to one Browns front office personnel person, Brady Quinn entered camp as the favorite to be the opening day starter, but Derek Anderson has come on strong in the past three days. On Wednesday, Quinn used a short passing attack to move the ball down the field, while Anderson used the more vertical variety and was just as effective. Quinn doesn't have it sewn up just yet. Stallworth Meets with Goodell - Donte' Stallworth has issued a statement after meeting with Roger Goodell on Wednesday. "I exercised poor judgment and have caused irreparable harm to Mario Reyes, his family, and the NFL," said Stallworth. "Whatever he (Goodell) ultimately decides is the appropriate discipline...I am truly sorry." CONTINUE READING

Jones/Jennings Battling it Out - Coach Jack Del Rio confirmed that Greg Jones will not be handed the Jaguars' No. 2 ball-carrying duties. "He's got to fight to be the best guy," Del Rio said. "We're not going to hand anything to anybody." The coach has long been a fan of Jones' hard charging running style, but rookie Rashad Jennings was more impressive this spring. CONTINUE READING

Holt Lands In Jacksonville

21. April 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Scratch Jacksonville off the list of team's looking to add a veteran presence at wide receiver. The team inked free-agent Torry Holt to a three-year, $13 million deal that could reach $20 million with incentives, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Holt chose the Jaguars over the Titans. The Bears, Eagles, and Giants reportedly never showed interest.

The 33-year old is coming off the worst season of his career. He mustered just 64 receptions for 796 yards and 3 TDs. Holt failed to yield a single 100-yard game and failed to reach the 90-catch plateu for the first time in six years and did not amass at least 1000 yards in receiving for only the second time in his 10-year career.

While Holt is a big upgrade for the Jaguars, who were entering the draft with Mike Walker and Dennis Northcutt atop the depth chart at the position, the run-first system and playing on grass for the first time in his career doesn't bode well for his overall numbers.

Holt's signing appears to be a major acquisition, considering Jacksonville's recent track record with receivers.

The Jaguars released first-round flop Matt Jones last month after he violated a plea agreement from a July 2008 drug charge, and they decided not to re-sign former first-round pick Reggie Williams. The team also whiffed with its signing last offseason of free-agent Jerry Porter, who turned out to be a major contributor to the team's poor chemistry in the locker room. Porter caught 11 passes (earning nearly $1 million per catch) last season.

Around The NFL

16. March 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Let's check out some of the latest news from around the league:

CUTLER ASKS FOR TRADE (Denver Post)
Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has formally asked to be traded, a request he made Sunday through his agent, Bus Cook. For now, the Broncos are hoping to appease Cutler's concerns and reach an understanding so they do not have to trade him. Cutler and Cook issued the trade request a day after a meeting with head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders did not go the way quarterback had hoped...MORE

PATS, PANTHERS TALKING PEPPERS (NFL.com)
The trade that sent Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs appears to be only the first phase of some major wheeling and dealing by the New England Patriots this offseason. The second phase, NFL sources say, is likely to involve a trade that would send Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers to the Patriots in exchange for the second-round pick (34th overall) they received from the Chiefs on Feb. 28...MORE

JAGS CUT TIES WITH JONES (Florida Times Union)
Wide receiver Matt Jones, a first round draft pick in 2005, was waived by the Jaguars on Monday after he served several days in jail last week for violating the terms of his probation on a drug charge. Jones led the team with 65 catches for 761 yards last year in the first 13 games

STALLWORTH INVOLVED IN FATAL ACCIDENT (Yahoo.com)
Browns' wideout Donte' Stallworth is expected to be charged for his involvement in an automobile crash that killed a pedestrian Saturday. The investigation is ongoing but DUI, vehicular manslaugher, and reckless driving are among the possible charges...MORE

LEVI ON THE BLOCK? (Chicago Sun-Times)
Despite already losing starting right tackle Stacey Andrews to Philadelphia in free agency and having limited depth at the position, the Bengals are actively working to trade starting left tackle Levi Jones. If they can't deal him, they'll probably cut him...MORE

RAVENS RELEASE ROLLE (Baltimore Sun)
The Ravens released Samari Rolle on Monday. The veteran cornerback asked to be cut so he could catch on with another team. The Ravens, who will have $6 million in cap space once Rolle's release becomes official, could look to sign wide receiver Torry Holt, who was recently released by the St. Louis Rams...MORE

Finding A Home For T.O.

6. March 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Cowboys cut Terrell Owens on Thursday. Here are a few teams for whom sigining the troubled wideout may actually make sense...

BALTIMORE RAVENS - The team desperately needs a playmaker on offense. Derrick Mason has been adequate and Mark Clayton has shown flashes, but Owens would give them a weapon that would change opponents game plans and may prevent teams from stacking the box. Joe Flacco is young, but has a strong arm and can get the ball to him often. The added plus is with Ray Lewis in the fold to keep him in check, Owens may actually shut up and play football.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - The Jaguars haven't had a Pro Bowl caliber wideout since Jimmy Smith was in his prime and the team has tried too many times going the cheap route with washed up veterans. Owens could help Jacksonville get over the hump or he could finally lead to the end of Jack Del Rio's era as the team's head coach.

MIAMI DOLPHINS - Bill Parcells didn't stick around long enough in Dallas to have to deal with the T.O. mess too much, but he knows first hand what it is all about. If he can overlook the baggage, the team's president could opt to add Owens to a group of talented young wideouts and give Miami a pretty formidable passing attack. Still, if T.O. didn't like Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, or Tony Romo, he may go crazy with Chad Pennington throwing him the ball.

OAKLAND RAIDERS - The Javon Walker experiment blew up (as expected) in Al Davis' face. Now, the mentally insane Davis could covet Owens. It would be the ulimate payback to Owens for being such a punk to have to finish his career in the Black Hole.

TENNESSEE TITANS - Don't kid ourself, I do like Justin Gage...if he was my No. 3 wideout maybe. No team has a greater need for an elite receiver than Owens. However, Jeff Fisher will likely take a note from the Eagles and Cowboys and avoid selling his soul to the devil in attempt to get that elusive Super Bowl ring.

Bengals: Rivers Still Not Signed

31. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Bengals first round pick, USC linebacker Keith  Rivers, will miss two more practices (7 total) on Thursday and there are no signs of a resolution in the immediate future.

The franchise has a long-history of rookie holdouts.  In fact, since 1997 the only two first-round picks who were at Bengals camp on Day 1 were WR Peter Warrick (2000) and QB Carson Palmer (2003).

This year's negotations are a bit more tricky because of the potential of 2010 being an uncapped year.

The New Orleans Saints  signed defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis on Wednesday, the seventh overall pick in the draft, leaving just two players unsigned -- Rivers and Jacksonville defensive end Derrick Harvey.

The difference between the contracts for No. 7 overall Ellis and No. 10 overall Jerod Mayo of New England shows why Nos. 8 (Harvey) and 9 (Rivers) are unsigned. Ellis’ five-year deal could be worth up to $49 million and includes $19.5 million guaranteed. Mayo’s deal is for five years, as well, and is worth a maximum of $18.9 million with $13.8 million guaranteed. There is a financial gulf, according to Mark Crunette of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

At least Rivers is a linebacker, so it should be easy for him to pick up things quickly. Still, how does a player that supposedly has so much to do with your defense's success in '08 not have a contract at this point?

Henry Suspended Four Games

31. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Free agent wide receiver Chris Henry was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Henry was released by Cincinnati in April after his fifth arrest. Commissioner Roger Goodell had suspended Henry indefinitely following his latest arrest. The charges against him on that arrest were subsequently dropped. With the indefinite suspension lifted, he is now eligible to sign with teams.

Interest in Henry may be light for the next few weeks, but he seems likely to catch on eventually because of his Pro Bowl-caliber talent. The Cowboys, Browns, Jaguars, Raiders, and Broncos could take a look.

Henry may participate in training camp and exhibition games if he is signed. He will be eligible for reinstatement following the fourth game of the season.

GSI Mock Draft: Rounds 9-10

22. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

With the GSI Mock Draft entering the final six rounds, we begin to double-up with the recap:

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3 | ROUND 4 | ROUND 5 | ROUND 6 | ROUND 7 | ROUND 8

ROUND 9
81. PREUTH - Steelers DEF
82. CLASGENS - Joey Galloway - WR
83. HUMBERT - Bernard Berrian - WR
84. BOLTON - Owen Daniels - TE
85. DINSMORE - Laveranues Coles - WR
86. MURDICO - Donald Driver - WR
87. SIMS - Jay Cutler - QB
88. SIMON - Nate Burleson - WR
89. WETZEL - Matt Schaub - QB
90. FISCHER - Justin Fargas - RB

ROUND 10
91. FISCHER - Patriots DEF
92. WETZEL - Cowboys DEF
93. SIMON - Deuce McAllister RB
94. SIMS - Chester Taylor RB
95. MURDICO - Eli Manning QB
96. DINSMORE - Bears DEF
97. BOLTON - Jaguars DEF
98. HUMBERT - DeAngello Williams - CAR
99. CLASGENS - Giants DEF
100. PREUTH - Ladell Betts - WA

My Picks: Galloway is the fourth receiver I have selected, but one that easily could emerge as a weekly starter on my roster. Somewhere between 80 and the 100th picks overall you can expect to see these type of wideouts fall off the board. His age is a concern though, but I still think he has upside after getting 98 targets last year. The Giants defense could be argued as fantasy's top option and easily a top 5 unit and some 30 picks later than the first defenses - San Diego and Minnesota - went off the board. I took heat from SIMS earlier, but he only has two wideouts on his team right now (Chad and Calvin Johnson) and I have added veterans Kevin Curtis and Joey Galloway as insurance. The Giants could easily equal or surpass the output by the others. Don't kid yourself, I am big on having a good defense, but this year there simply is not enough seperation in the top 6-8 units to justify taking one early. BUILD DEPTH AT KEY POSITIONS.

Nice Finds: Owen Daniels (84), Justin Fargas (90), Chester Taylor (94)

Final Take: Many teams still need backup QB's and kickers. Most have TE and a DEF at this point. The key to success in the later rounds is knowing what owners need what.
