Fantasy: QB Rumblings

11. December 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Here are some random QB rumblings as we turn the page to Week 14...

Robert Griffin III
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III’s status is up in the air for Week 15’s game against the Browns. The rookie suffered a mild sprain of his right LCL in Sunday’s win over the Ravens. He is officially listed as day-to-day and will certainly be limited in practice throughout the upcoming week. While its good news that there is no structural damage to knee around surrounding areas, owners will need to monitor his status before making a decision. RGIII tallied 246 yards and a TD through the air and rushed for an additional 34 yards before exiting late in regulation.

Jay Cutler
Signs are pointing to a return to the lineup in Week 15 for Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler, who was forced from Sunday’s loss at Minnesota due to a neck injury. Head coach Lovie Smith said on Monday that Cutler is dealing with "normal soreness you'd have from a stiff neck." Even if he suits up Cutler is not an appealing fantasy option in his upcoming matchup against the Packers. He completed 11 of 27 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown while being intercepted four times in Week 2’s meeting with his divisional foes in Green Bay. Cutler is not a guy you want to roll with in a fantasy playoff matchup.

Eli Manning

Eli Manning threw for a season-high four touchdowns in the Giants’ victory over the Saints on Sunday. It marked his seventh 4-TD game of his career. After going without a TD pass in three straight games, Manning has now tossed for eight passing scores in his three contests since the team’s Week 11 bye. The Giants’ signal caller was picked off twice and now has 13 interceptions on the season. He remains a mid-range QB1 going into Week 15’s trip to Atlanta in a game that promise to have points put on the scoreboard.

Josh Freeman

Tampa Bay suffered a tough loss at home to a Philadelphia team that had dropped nine straight games. Quarterback Josh Freeman was unable to take advantage of a promising matchup as he threw for just 189 yards. However, the Bucs’ signal caller still tossed a pair of touchdown passes. It marked the eighth time in nine weeks that Freeman has thrown for multiple scores. Look for even bigger things in Week 15’s trip to New Orleans as he faces a Saints’ secondary that has ceded a league-high 27 passing touchdowns on the season.

Andy Dalton
Andy Dalton continued his late-season cool off in the Bengals’ loss to the Cowboys in Week 14. The signal caller finished the game with 206 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 20-of-33 passing. He’s only averaging 208 yards per game over his last seven contests and has thrown for just one score in four of those outings. While he was a viable starting option during bye weeks, Dalton cannot be trusted as a strong starting option during the fantasy playoffs as his upside is just too limited.

Joe Flacco
A week after quarterback Joe Flacco publicly spoke out about the team’s play-calling, the Ravens fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on Monday. Former Colts’ head coach and current QB coach Jim Caldwell, who has never called a play at this level, will take over the position for the remaining of the season. Flacco should get to have a bit more of a say in the offense under Caldwell and will likely be able to run a bit more no-huddle offense. Flacco is worth a roster spot, but not a QB1 at the moment.

Jake Locker

Titans’ quarterback Jake Locker continued to show promise in Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis, but it was not enough to make up for his mistakes. He was picked off twice, including one that was returned for touchdown, and finished with 262 yards and a touchdown. He’s now thrown seven interceptions over the past three games. With a new offensive coordinator coming in and new system to follow, Locker’s learning curve will be large again next season. Owners in keeper leagues should temper their expectations with the second-year signal caller.

Look Ahead: Chicago Bears

3. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
During his last two seasons (2007-08) playing with Jay Cutler in Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall averaged 103 catches for 1,295 yards with 13 touchdowns during that span. The two are reunited in the Windy City in 2012 and if they pick up where they left off it could pay huge fantasy dividends. Despite being stuck in Miami the past two seasons, Marshall has still been productive. He had a touchdown and/or 100 yards receiving in eight games on his way to pulling in 81 balls for 1,214 yards in 2011.

SCHEDULE
The Bears schedule ranks 20th with their opponents posting a .492 winning percentage last season. The first half of the schedule is extremely fantasy friendly with five of their first eight games at home and road games at Green Bay, Dallas, and Jacksonville. The fantasy playoffs look bright too. The Bears are indoors at Minnesota in Week 14, at home to Green Bay in Week 15 and a trip to the desert for a Week 16 showdown with the Cardinals. Owners will get a good chance to watch their Bears’ players in the spotlight with five nationally televised games on tap.

STUD
A season-ending injury coupled with the arrival of new faces in the Bears’ backfield may be enough to make owners shy away from Matt Forte. That could prove to be a mistake. Before spraining in his knee in Week 13 he was posting elite-type numbers and stilled tallied nearly 1,500 total yards. In fact, he’s totaled at least 1400 yards during each season of his career. Forte is going to be hard pressed to match those numbers with fewer touches likely and the TD totals have never been great (10 total TD’s over past two seasons). Regardless consider him a low-end RB1 with a bit more upside in PPR formats.

DUD

Despite the fact that he is entering training camp as the Bears No. 2 WR on the team’s official depth chart, owners need to shy away from Devin Hester.  The four-year project of the speedster at wide receiver has produced some mediocre results. He mustered just five catches over 20 yards and found the end zone just one time in 2011. With offseason additions at the position via free agency and the draft, the competition will be fierce for targets and Hester is just too inconsistent to count on.

SLEEPER
In addition to having Marshall rejoin him as a teammate Jay Cutler also gets a boost with the departure of Mike Martz as the team’s offensive coordinator. New offensive coordinator Mike Tice has already removed the seven-step drops that led to Cutler being on his back frequently. His decision making is getting better and there’s never been a question about Cutler’s arm strength. He was on his way to one of his best seasons before suffering a season-ending hand injury in Week 10. He is a great low-end QB1 option that should fall into the mid-rounds on draft night.

NEW ADDITION
With their ability to lock up Forte long term in question, the Bears moved to sign Michael Bush during free agency. Bush excelled filling in for the oft injured Darren McFadden the past two seasons in Oakland, including carrying the ball 256 times for 977 yards a year ago. Over the past two seasons Bush has scored 16 total touchdowns and even if Forte stays healthy, he figures to get a ton of work at the goalline for the Bears in 2012. He’s a great handcuff option for Forte owners and should be viewed as a decent RB3 in deeper leagues.

POSITION BATTLE

We know what Hester can provide and it looks like Johnny Knox isn’t going to be a factor with his neck injury which leaves rookie Alshon Jeffrey and veteran Earl Bennett as players to watch this preseason. Both are nice options for late-round picks with high upside. Jeffrey has the tools and the talent, but is raw and could start slow. Bennet, who figures to slide into the slot position, is a former college teammate of Cutler and has obvious chemistry with his signal caller. The two will battle it out for targets all season long.

BENCH BUILDER

Kellen Davis was lost in a Mike Martz-ran offense where tight ends are non-existent, finishing with just 18 receptions a year ago. Expect him to see a larger role in the team’s passing game in the season ahead. Amazingly, he led the Bears’ offense in 2011 with five receiving touchdowns. At 6-foot-7, Davis is a huge target and one that the Bears would like to utilize. He’s a sly pick late on draft day or for $1 on auction night. If he goes undrafted it won’t be long before he’s hot waiver wire fodder.

Fantasy Snapshot: Week 1

8. September 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

FANTASY 101
GO WITH THE GUNS:
You drafted players that high for a reason! It’s pretty hard to prognosticate what is going to happen in Week One of the NFL season. Don’t over think it! There’s no reason to bench guys that you drafted with your first few picks before they’ve even played a snap as a member of your fantasy team.

START 'EM
QB Josh Freeman (vs. DET)
– The Lions’ defensive of line is as strong as they come, but its secondary remains vulnerable. Freeman won’t put up huge numbers but I expect him to improve upon the 251 yards and a touchdown he passed for against Detroit in Week 15 of last season.

RB Beanie Wells (vs. CAR) – With Tim Hightower no longer in the picture and rookie Ryan Williams already knocked out for the season, the door is wide open for Wells to walk through this season. He should get off to a great start against a Panthers’ D that struggled to stop the run a year ago.

SIT 'EM
QB Jay Cutler (vs. ATL)
– Expect the Falcons to exploit a weak Bears’ offensive line with an aggressive pass rush and that will lead to a long day for Cutler. The friendly confines of Solider Field haven’t been so friendly. In eight games at home a year ago Cutler threw 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

WR Miles Austin (vs. NYJ) – I am big fan of the Cowboys’ wideout, but he’s coming off a nagging preseason hamstring injury and has to make a trip to Revis Island in the regular season opener. With the Jets’ Darrelle Revis likely shadowing him most of the day, Austin’s production will be limited in Week 1.

FANTASY INFIRMARY
QB Peyton Manning (neck)
– Unless you’ve been living under a rock, most already know that Manning is dealing with a neck injury. News broke that he had a third surgery this morning and it is looking more and more like his 2011 season is in jeopardy. The Colts will wait as long as possible before considering IR, but fantasy owners need to explore alternative options immediately.

RB Arian Foster (hamstring) – Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Thursday that Arian Foster is headed toward the dreaded "game-time decision" tag for Sunday. If Foster does sit, expect veteran Derrick Ward to get the start.

WR Sidney Rice (shoulder) – It is looking more and more like Rice is going to miss his first game as a Seahawk. I’m not crazy about his fantasy potential this season  and certainly concerned for Week 1.

WIRE WATCH
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (BUF)
– Fitzpatrick isn’t flashy, but he is a nice backup option to have and is currently available in many of the leagues out there. He’s a solid QB2 that can be played in the right matchup.

RB Ben Tate (HOU) – If the owner with Arian Foster hasn’t already handcuffed Ben Tate to their star running back beat them to the punch. Tate has high upside and could have value even if Foster doesn’t get hurt.

WR Nate Burleson (DET) – The Lions’ offense is capable of putting points on the board in hurry and Burleson will benefit from the attention some of the unit’s big names will command. He had 10 multiple catch games a year ago.

Game Balls: Week 12

29. November 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

RB Game Ball - Peyton Hillis, Cleveland - 26 carries, 131 yards, 3 TD, 6 catches, 63 yards
It's not that tough to figure out where the Browns may be without their stud running back. Winless would be a pretty good bet. Right not Hillis is everything for Cleveland. The team has had a merry-go-round at the QB position and Jake Delhomme did not look very good against his former team on Sunday with no TDs and two interceptions. Hillis led the team in receiving yards against the Panthers and leads the team in receptions for the year. And if the Browns score, it's usually Hillis doing the dance. He has accounted for 13 of the teams 21 TDs this season. Just imagine how good he might be if someone actually helped him out.

RB Honorable Mention - Arian Foster, Houston - 30 carries, 143 yards, 9 catches, 75 yards (getting close to Faulk/Tomlinson/Peterson fantasy numbers.)

QB Game Ball - Sam Bradford, St. Louis - 22/37, 308 yards, 3 TD
Before the season started, the NFC West looked pretty weak. And, well, it is. Most would have thought the 49ers would walk to an easy title. But that has not happened. It's actually the Rams with their rookie QB who are sitting in the driving seat for the playoffs. Bradford has a career-day against the Broncos on Sunday notching his first 300+ yard game and his first 3 TD performance. In his last six games he has 11 TDs and just one interception. And he has his team looked toward the post-season.

QB Honorable Mention - Jay Cutler, Chicago - 14/21, 247 yards, 4 TD (amazing what a running game can do to help the offense - Forte 117 rushing yards.)

WR Game Ball - Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City - 13 catches, 170 yards, 3 TD
If the Rams are the surprise in the NFC, the Chiefs hold that title in the AFC. KC has a solid offense with Matt Cassel putting up big numbers every week. They have a two-headed running back in veteran Thomas Jones and youngster Jamal Charles. And they have a stud receiver in Bowe. He has scored in seven straight games with a total of 13 in that span. Throw that in with 465 receiving yards in the last three games and you have one hot receiver.

WR Honorable Mention - Greg Jennings, Green Bay - 5 catches, 119 yards (may be the only guy hotter than Bowe in the last month and a half.)

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Peyton Manning, QB, Indianapolis - 31/48, 285, 2 TD, Int
Last week Peyton got the honorable mention in this column - this week the socks are all his. The 'stud' QB has thrown seven picks in his last two games and now has 11 on the season. Sure, he also has six TDs in the last two games and some nice yardage, but most of that has been in come-from-behind mode and the Colts ended up losing both of those games. Yeah, injuries have been a problem for Indy on both sides of the ball. But in the end the team l rests on Peyton's shoulders. And for now they have to live with his stinking socks.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Cortland Finnegan, CB, Tennessee - 4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 ejection (no class.)

Game Balls: Week 7

25. October 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo - 29/43, 374 yards, 4 TD, 2 INT
Most of the time any player that is looking at an 0-6 record doesn't deserve a Game Ball. But this was not a typical loss for the Bills. Fitzpatrick flung the ball around againt one of the toughest defenses in the league - the Baltimore Ravens. It helps to have more than one receiver to throw the ball to. Lee Evans had 105 yards and scored three times. And if you haven't heard about Steve Johnson yet, check your league's waiver wire. All he has done is score five times in the last four games and posted 158 yards on Sunday. Sure, the Bills aren't about to turn into the 'Greatest Show' since the Rams, but given their defense and shady running game, all three of these guys should continue to put up nice numbers.

QB Honorable Mention - Todd Bouman, Jacksonville - 18/34, 222 yards, 2 TD, 2 Int (not bad for a guy that hasn't thrown a ball in a real game since 2005.)

RB Game Ball - Darren McFadden, Oakland - 16 carries, 165 yards, 3 TD, 2 catches, 31 yards, 1 TD
Not only did the Raiders spank the Broncos on Sunday, they were very happy about it! Oakland set a team record by scoring 59 points against their arch-rivals and McFadden did most of the damage. After missing a few games with hamstring issues, he showed no signs of slowing down on Sunday. He also doesn't seemed worried about Michael Bush who had one less carru but managed just 52 yards and a score. Either way, it was a crazy win for the Raiders and anyone who started McFadden on their fantasy team.

RB Honorable Mention - Thomas Jones, Kansas City - 20 carries, 125 yards, 1 TD (on his way to his 6th 1000-yard season.)

WR Game Ball - Roddy White, Atlanta - 11 catches, 201 yards, 2 TD
White set the tone early against the Benglas with a big catch in the first quarter and a score in the second. Then he put the nail in the coffin with a TD and a 2-pt. conversion in the fourth. Obviously White was out to prove a point with Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens on the other side of the ball. And, well, mission accomplished. But for those that have been following football closely for the past few years, this game was no fluke. Over the last three years White averaged 1246 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. This year he should top both of those numbers.

WR Honorable Mention - Kenny Britt, Tennessee - 7 catches, 225 yards, 3 TD (not bad for a guy that was nearly benched for a bar fight.)

THE GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Brett Favre, Minnesota - 16/29, 212 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT
It's one thing to have a bad outing. It's another thing to have a bad season. It's even another thing to have a really bad game in the place where you spent most of your career. It also doesn't help to be under investigation for some strange text messages. And finally it doesn't help at all to have a fractured ankle and be walking around in a boot after one of the worst losses of your career. Brett, you can still wear your Packers jersey when you walk into the Hall of Fame but this week, along with that boot, you have to live a pair of nasty, stinky socks.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Jay Cutler, Chicago - 26/40, 281 yards, 1 TD, and 4 Int (maybe you can share the sock with Mike Martz.)

Fantasy Busts: Quarterbacks

27. July 2010  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Every year players burst onto the scene out of nowhere and likewise guys who have great expectations, let their owners down. This year will be no different. Here's a couple candidates who might disappoint fantasy owners this season:

Jay Cutler (CHI) – Cutler failed to win over Chicago fans in his first year in a Bears uniform last season - far from it in fact. That being said, I've seen Cutler ranked anywhere from 8th to 12th. That would mean Cutler is a weekly starter for fantasy football. As Lee Corso would say, not so fast my friends. Cutler is in an awful situation in the Windy City. There are no weapons for him to throw to. Some might speak up and say, but isn't Mike Martz the new offensive coordinator? Yes, but I'll argue that Martz can be called a guru all he wants, but has very little track record of lighting up a scoreboard without a guy named Kurt Warner under center. And make no mistake, Cutler is no Kurt Warner. So, let another owner in your league take Cutler and you target a borderline starter like Chad Henne instead.

Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – I will reserve all commentary about Roethlisberger's offseason troubles, but they do factor into his appearance on the bust list. Without the 4-6 game suspension hanging over his head, Big Ben would be a top 10 QB. And even if Ben had been able to keep little Ben in his holster, I would still put him on the bust list this year. His #1 receiver, Santonio Holmes, is gone. His right tackle, Willie Colon is out for the year. Willie Parker is gone. In short, the Steelers did very little to help Ben's situation out this offseason and they look quite pedestrian on offense. So, if Roethlisberger is available in a late round, maybe take him, but I'd probably avoid him altogether.

Vince Young (TEN) – Young was one of the best comeback stories of 2009. But before proclaiming the VY of Texas Longhorn fame is back, let's take a closer look. Young was extremely inconsistent, throwing for less than 200 yards in 60% of his games last year. For him to be considered a starting fantasy QB, he's going to have to produce more lines like he did in Weeks 12 and 13 last season and less like he did in Week 16 against San Diego. So, yes, he's still young and might still have his best years ahead of him, but without an elite passing system or elite weapons around him, I still consider Young nothing more than a bye week fill in at this point.

Fantasy Impact: Martz To Bears

2. February 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Chicago Bears named former Rams’ head coach Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator on Monday.  Known for his zany play-calling and aggressive passing, he could be just the boost that Jay Cutler needs to kick start his career and once again become fantasy relevant.

We all know about what he did during his days leading the “Greatest Show on Turf”, but what about his days since then as an offensive coordinator?

His most recent in San Francisco wasn’t the best, but the team wasn’t a great fit and once Mike Singletary took over it simply wasn’t a match.

However, before that he did have some impact in Detroit. He helped Jon Kitna pass for 4,000 yards in a season in both years he was there. Wide receiver Roy Williams enjoyed his best season as a pro, finishing with 1,310 yards, 7 TDs in 2006.  Running back Kevin Jones posted a career-high 61 catches and 520 receiving yards during the same season. Under Martz, even wide receivers Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey showed up on the fantasy radar and haven’t since.

Chicago still lacks talent at wide receiver and I don’t know if there will ever be a great passing game in the Windy City late in the season due to the elements and that is never good come fantasy playoff time. Still, here’s my take on what it means from a fantasy standpoint:

--Jay Cutler: He will get back to throwing over 4,000 yards and will see an increase in passing touchdowns.  I still expect him to turn over the ball at a high rate, but the arrival of Martz definitely keeps him in the low-end range of QB1 heading into next season. His value goes up even more if the Bears are able to improve at receiver during the off-season.

--Matt Forte: Already solid in PPR formats, Forte will be a top 5 running back in league’s where you get points for receptions. Under Martz though I am not sure his rushing numbers will go up and his total touchdowns shouldn’t see much of an increase either.

--Greg Olsen: Tight ends have never been a big part of the Martz’ offense. Still, Olsen is the most-gifted target Cutler currently has so expect him to have a large role.

--Bears wideouts: Martz will get value out of them and will be able to utilize the blazing speed the group possesses. It will be interesting to see which receivers emerge on the depth chart, but rest assured at least one of them will. Figuring out which one may be tougher than you think though.

Time To Cut Cutler?

13. November 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler was picked off five times by the 49ers in the team's loss on Thursday night. He now is the NFL's dubious leaders with 17 interceptions thrown.

It is the first time in Chicago's franchise history a quarterback has thrown five interceptions. Cutler also becomes the first Bears' signal caller since Bobby Wade in 1962 to have multiple four-interception games during the same season.

Only so much can be blamed on the Bears' struggling offensive line and the team's lack of weapons.

A big factor in Cutler's struggles has been the Bears' inability to move the ball on the ground. Matt Forte has proven to be a fantasy disappointment in non-PPR formats. While the second-year running back has struggled, he clearly is still worth a roster spot.

The questions remains, is Cutler still worth a roster spot?

As bad as he's been late and as much as his antics on the sidelines are starting to bother me, Cutler is worth a roster spot. If he is going to turn it around at all a look at his schedule down the stretch will certainly play a role in it, especially during the critical fantasy weeks of 13 through 16:

Week 13 vs. STL (allows 17.7 points per game to QBs)
Week 14 vs. GB (allows 15.2 points per game to QBs)
Week 15 at BAL (allows 15.6 points per game to QBs)
Week 16 vs. MIN (allows 17.4 points per game to QBs)

If you are counting on Cutler as your fantasy starter right now your team is not going too far. However, if you can afford to have on the bench as a backup, who could play if he gets hot, then he's worth holding on to.

Game Balls - Week 2

20. September 2009  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Jay Cutler, Chicago - 27/38, 236 yards, 2 TD

There were plenty of QBs who finished with better numbers than Cutler on Sunday, but none may have needed a good game more than Cutler. The Bears new QB bombed last week against the Packers and faced a tough opponent on Sunday in the Steelers. But he overcame his mistakes and led his team to a big win over the Superbowl champs.

QB Honorable Mention - Phillip Rivers, San Diego - 25/45, 436 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT (impressive stats especially against a team like the Ravens.)

RB Game Ball - Cedric Benson, Cincinnati - 29 carries, 141 yards

Everyone knows the Bengals can throw the football but now with Benson as the primary back, they can run it too. He had a nice game in week one against the Broncos and followed that up with a huge performance in Green Bay. If he can keep it up the Bengals may start turning some heads around the NFL.

RB Honorable Mentions - Frank Gore, San Francisco & Chris Johnson, Tennessee (530 total combined yards and 5 TDs between the two studs.)

WR Game Ball - Andre Johnson, Houston - 10 catches, 149 yards, 2 TD

After grabbing just four passes last week, Johnson proved his worth against the Titans on Sunday. It's those type of numbers owners can expect from one of the top receivers in the league. And a healthy Kevin Walker will make him, and the Texans offense, even better.

WR Honorable Mention - Mike Sims-Walker, Jacksonville - 6 catches, 106 yards, 1 TD (this weeks top waiver-wire pick-up!)

TE Game Ball - Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta - 7 catches, 71 yards, 1 TD

Last week I gave Tony G an honorable mention. This week the award is all his. Many thought, inlcuding myself, that Gonzalez would just be a nice addition to the Falcons offense. It turns out he is becoming the main focus.

TE Honorable Mention - Chris Cooley Washington - 7 catches, 83 yards (just glad I didn't have to watch that 9-7 game.)

The Game Used Sock Award - Brady Quinn, Cleveland - 18/31, 0 TD, 1 Int

I always feel better when the Browns lose. and it is even nicer when they really stink it up. With Quinn at the helm that may be happening a lot this season. I'll admit I have him stashed away, deep on one of my fantasy teams that has unlimited roster spots. But I don't think I'll be starting him any time soon. For that matter, he may not be starting soon! Hey, look on the bright side - he finished with four rushing yards. And a couple of dirty socks.

Dirty Sock Honorable Mention - Tom Brady, New England - 23/47, 216 yards, 0 TD, 1 Int (no Wes Welker - whatever.)
