NCAA Tournament: Two Rounds Done

21. March 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Wow! What a weekend of college hoops. Despite the talk of expanding to 96 teams and the criticism that college basketball is water down. The first two rounds of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament delivered plenty of exhilarating drama as usual.

Here are some of final takes from the first four days of the tourney:

KENTUCKY – John Calapari has had his boys ready to play. After knocking out East Tennessee by 29, the Wildcats beat Wake Forest by 30 points. Eric Bledsoe’s eight 3-pointers in the first game was one of the best shooting displays in Kentucky’s storied history. For the critics that have insisted that despite its talent, UK is too young and inexperienced to win it all shame on you. Talent always wins when it plays to its fullest potential.

XAVIER – Sean Who? In his first season as head coach Chris Mack did something former coach Sean Miller couldn’t - beat Pittsburgh. The Muskies have made their way back into the Sweet 16 for a third consecutive season with an exhilarating win over the Panthers. Jordan Crawford is making a name for himself on a national scene here for something aside from dunking on LeBron James. He put up another 27 points in Sunday’s win.

KANSAS – Count me amongst the nearly 44 percent of people in America (according to ESPN.com’s online pool) that bought into Kansas being the team to beat. They failed to put 40 minutes together in Thursday’s opening round versus Lehigh and only had a lead at the 2-0 mark as they got knocked out by Northern Iowa, 69-67.

OHIO STATE – With Kansas officially out, the Buckeyes are the top team in the Midwest Region and they are playing like it. Not only are the Jayhawks out of the mix, but so too have gone No. 3 Georgetown and No. 4 Maryland. Evan Turner shook off one of the worst night’s of his career by tossing up a triple-double 75-66 win over Georgia Tech.

CORNELL – The Big Red followed up their first-ever tournament win by winning a second tournament game and advance to the Sweet 16 as they are the lowest remaining seed in the tourney. Now, they get the daunting task of playing the tournament’s highest ranked team left standing, Kentucky.

BIG EAST – All the talk surrounding the Big East entering the tournament suggested that the conference would once again flex its muscle. However, half of the league’s tournament-high eight teams couldn’t get out of Round 1, including Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame and Marquette. Pittsburgh and Villanova joined their league foes with second-round departures. Only Syracuse and West Virginia are left standing.

Henry Not Coming to UK

1. July 2009  - Published by Rick Broering

Former Putnam City guard Xavier Henry says he is staying with his plans to play basketball at Kansas.

Henry texted a Kansas City radio station Tuesday saying he decided to stay with the Jayhawks. Earlier in the day, Henry's father, Carl Henry, told a Kansas City radio station that his son might have had a change of heart about attending Kansas, according to reports in the Kansas City Star and Louisville Courier-Journal.Kansas coach Bill Self flew to Oklahoma City on Tuesday night to talk with the Henry family.

In an interview that aired on 610-AM in Kansas City, Carl Henry said his son, one of the nation's top recruits, originally wanted to follow ex-Memphis coach John Calipari to Kentucky before committing to the Jayhawks.

Xavier Henry is a 6-6 shooting guard who was a McDonald's All-American and The Oklahoman's state Player of the Year honors after leading PC to the Class 6A state title.

NBA Draft: Local Love

26. June 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Here's a look at some of the local players taken in Thursday's NBA draft and where they landed...

Terrence Williams (6-6, 213) - SG - Louisville
Rd. 1 - 11th pick - New Jersey
Analysis: With the Nets trading Vince Carter, they are starting over. Williams is one of the best athletes in the draft, has a ton of skills and can really defend. He's an eccentric dude and he doesn't always come to play, but when he does, wow. It will be fun to watch Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Williams, Yi Jianlian and Brook Lopez grow up together. They'll lose a lot of games, but there's a lot of potential there.

Earl Clark (6-10, 226) - SF
Rd. 1 - 14th pick - Phoenix
Analysis: The Suns have clearly decided to rebuild, and with Clark, they get one of the five top talents of the draft. Clark can do everything -- he's long and athletic and he can play multiple positions, including point forward. His effort was inconsistent at Louisville, but he's got as much upside as anyone in the draft. If they trade away Amare Stoudemire to Golden State, they'll have a nice young core with Andris Biedrins, Brandan Wright, Clark, Robin Lopez and (if they got the 7th pick) Stephen Curry. If that happens, the Suns won't be all that great from the get-go, but they'll be fun. The question is, will Steve Nash stay around to lead them?

Derrick Brown (6-9 225) - PF - Xavier
Rd. 2 - 10th pick (40th overall) - Charlotte
Analysis: I love this pick for the Bobcats. I think Brown, had he stayed in school another year, would've been a surefire first-round pick. He's an excellent athlete; he can play the 3 and the 4; and he still has lots of upside.

Jodie Meeks (6-4 211) - SG - Kentucky
Rd. 2. 11th pcik (41st overall) - Milwaukee
Analysis: Meeks can provide some big-time scoring off the bench. Nice pick here, although I worry about his lack of athleticism.

Meeks Will Stay In Draft

15. June 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

press release from University of Kentucky:

University of Kentucky All-American Jodie Meeks will forego his senior season and keep his name in this year's NBA Draft.

Meeks, a 6-4 guard, will be the first Wildcat underclassmen since Randolph Morris and Rajon Rondo in 2006 to enter the NBA Draft.

He led the SEC and ranked eighth in the country in scoring, averaging 23.7 points per game. He set the school record for points in a game (54 at Tennessee) and three-pointers in a season (117), while also shooting an SEC best 90.2 percent from the free throw line. Starting all 36 games this season, Meeks led the SEC in two other offensive categories including three-point field goal percentage (40.6) and three-point field goals per game (3.25).

"I want to thank the fans and the city of Lexington. They have been great and I will always be a Kentucky Wildcat," said Meeks. "I feel comfortable with my decision and I'm confident in my ability. My family and I talked over the weekend and decided this was the best decision."

The 2009 NBA Draft will take place on June 25.

Clay: It's More About Rose Than Calipari

30. May 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

from Lexington Herald-Leader...

There may come a day when John Calipari's detractors will finally catch the coach red-handed at something other than guilt by association.

But this isn't that day.

Here's why: The NCAA allegations against the Memphis basketball program aren't a John Calipari issue.

They're a Derrick Rose issue.

Page 8 of the 13-page letter outlining the allegations sent by the NCAA to the University of Memphis states:

"It is alleged that (name redacted), prospective men's basketball student-athlete, failed to deport himself in accordance with the generally recognized high standards of honesty and sportsmanship normally associated with the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics for his knowing fraudulence or misconduct in connection with his entrance examination."

UK: Here Comes The Haters

27. May 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It didn't take long for the vulchers to begin to swarm in Lexington and around the Commonwealth on Wednesday. Despite all of the optimism and buzz on created around the University of Kentucky basketball program with the arrival of new head coach John Calipari there has been a small group of haters.

They have warned that playing with fire will get you burned and many have accussed Calipari of being "a snake" and "a cheater".

The Memphis Commerical Appeal reports that the notice of allegations -- that's the official term for it -- charges Memphis with six different major infractions, three of which involve Jenny Bruun, the former coach of the women's golf team.

The other three are about hoops. It's honestly not as bad as it could be. Two of the charges involve the associate of a player who traveled with the team -- getting free hotels and airfare -- who should have paid his own way. By all accounts, the person did reimburse the university for other trips he made. So this may amount to no more than a simple accounting and monitoring error.

On June 6, the University of Memphis will appear before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in connection with allegations of three major rules violations under Calipari, including the charge that one player -- Derrick Rose? -- didn't take his own SAT. Calipari is not personally implicated in any of the allegations.

The haters are going to take this and run, but I will choose to take the wait-and-see approach. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

The reality of the matter is that the NCAA's rules are broken in some shape or form by nearly every major program in the country.

Fans cry for squeaky clean programs, but I challenge them to list five that have had sustained success.

I don't know whether or not Calipari is guilty or not. I do know that UK just landed its best recruiting class in a decade. I do know that I am as excited as I have been in years about the upcoming Wildcats' season.

Adding fuel to the fire for Calipari on this day was news that five-star recruit John Wall plead guilty to a Class I misdemeanor for breaking and entering.

Meanwhile, former Kentucky men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie sued the school Wednesday, seeking at least $6 million he says he is owed on his deal for being fired without cause.

It wasn't the best day for the school by any means, but let's not get too carried away.

Scholarships Open Up At UK

26. May 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

from official press release from University of Kentucky:

University of Kentucky men's basketball players, Jared Carter, A.J. Stewart and Donald Williams will not return to UK for the 2009-10 season.

Carter, a 7-2 senior, will not seek a fifth year, after sitting out the majority of the 2006-07 season due to a shoulder injury. The Georgetown, Ky., native finished his career with the Wildcats averaging 1.0 points and 1.1 rebounds in 42 games.

"I've enjoyed my experience at UK and will remember all the people and players I've met along the way, especially Mr. Keightley," said Carter. "I'm looking forward to moving on with my life and am excited to see what professional  opportunities await me."

A.J. Stewart and Donald Williams are both seeking a transfer.

Stewart, a 6-7 sophomore, averaged 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds this season. He shot 82 percent from the free throw line, while averaging 5.7 minutes per game.

"I appreciate Coach Calipari and the staff being truthful with me," said Stewart. "I want to further my career both academically and athletically at a school where more playing time is available. I know that coach will do anything possible to find a great situation for me."

Williams, a 6-3 freshman, did not see any action in 2009, his freshman season.

"My time at Kentucky was a great experience," said Williams. "I developed great friendships with my teammates; the environment was great; the fans showed us a lot of love; my teachers were great. It was just a good experience for me and a
wonderful opportunity to improve myself, being around different guys from different areas. Even though I had to sit out this year, I would have liked to have played and helped, but with coach leaving, sometimes it just happens that way."

ESPN: Calipari Winning Over Fans

20. May 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Dana O'Neil offered this must-read for UK fans on ESPN.com:

The message from The Savior came -- naturally, in these multimedia times -- via Twitter.

At 1:22 on Tuesday afternoon, UKCoachCalipari Tweeted, "This is unbelievable. Tomorrow we will !#$@+&%# that %&$* %&:; has $@~'%# to *2$( at %&%#&%$). Can u believe this!"

Calipari will debut at UK with what most regard as one of the top recruiting classes of the decade.
And his 61,292 loyal followers, considering the message with the same fervor with which religious fanatics might contemplate the Virgin Mary in the syrup on their waffles, dashed to their hieroglyphic-to-English dictionaries and wrenched decoder pens out of their toddlers' chubby palms.

The final answer to the John Wall riddle lay in the ampersands.
