Look Ahead: Chicago Bears

3. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
During his last two seasons (2007-08) playing with Jay Cutler in Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall averaged 103 catches for 1,295 yards with 13 touchdowns during that span. The two are reunited in the Windy City in 2012 and if they pick up where they left off it could pay huge fantasy dividends. Despite being stuck in Miami the past two seasons, Marshall has still been productive. He had a touchdown and/or 100 yards receiving in eight games on his way to pulling in 81 balls for 1,214 yards in 2011.

SCHEDULE
The Bears schedule ranks 20th with their opponents posting a .492 winning percentage last season. The first half of the schedule is extremely fantasy friendly with five of their first eight games at home and road games at Green Bay, Dallas, and Jacksonville. The fantasy playoffs look bright too. The Bears are indoors at Minnesota in Week 14, at home to Green Bay in Week 15 and a trip to the desert for a Week 16 showdown with the Cardinals. Owners will get a good chance to watch their Bears’ players in the spotlight with five nationally televised games on tap.

STUD
A season-ending injury coupled with the arrival of new faces in the Bears’ backfield may be enough to make owners shy away from Matt Forte. That could prove to be a mistake. Before spraining in his knee in Week 13 he was posting elite-type numbers and stilled tallied nearly 1,500 total yards. In fact, he’s totaled at least 1400 yards during each season of his career. Forte is going to be hard pressed to match those numbers with fewer touches likely and the TD totals have never been great (10 total TD’s over past two seasons). Regardless consider him a low-end RB1 with a bit more upside in PPR formats.

DUD

Despite the fact that he is entering training camp as the Bears No. 2 WR on the team’s official depth chart, owners need to shy away from Devin Hester.  The four-year project of the speedster at wide receiver has produced some mediocre results. He mustered just five catches over 20 yards and found the end zone just one time in 2011. With offseason additions at the position via free agency and the draft, the competition will be fierce for targets and Hester is just too inconsistent to count on.

SLEEPER
In addition to having Marshall rejoin him as a teammate Jay Cutler also gets a boost with the departure of Mike Martz as the team’s offensive coordinator. New offensive coordinator Mike Tice has already removed the seven-step drops that led to Cutler being on his back frequently. His decision making is getting better and there’s never been a question about Cutler’s arm strength. He was on his way to one of his best seasons before suffering a season-ending hand injury in Week 10. He is a great low-end QB1 option that should fall into the mid-rounds on draft night.

NEW ADDITION
With their ability to lock up Forte long term in question, the Bears moved to sign Michael Bush during free agency. Bush excelled filling in for the oft injured Darren McFadden the past two seasons in Oakland, including carrying the ball 256 times for 977 yards a year ago. Over the past two seasons Bush has scored 16 total touchdowns and even if Forte stays healthy, he figures to get a ton of work at the goalline for the Bears in 2012. He’s a great handcuff option for Forte owners and should be viewed as a decent RB3 in deeper leagues.

POSITION BATTLE

We know what Hester can provide and it looks like Johnny Knox isn’t going to be a factor with his neck injury which leaves rookie Alshon Jeffrey and veteran Earl Bennett as players to watch this preseason. Both are nice options for late-round picks with high upside. Jeffrey has the tools and the talent, but is raw and could start slow. Bennet, who figures to slide into the slot position, is a former college teammate of Cutler and has obvious chemistry with his signal caller. The two will battle it out for targets all season long.

BENCH BUILDER

Kellen Davis was lost in a Mike Martz-ran offense where tight ends are non-existent, finishing with just 18 receptions a year ago. Expect him to see a larger role in the team’s passing game in the season ahead. Amazingly, he led the Bears’ offense in 2011 with five receiving touchdowns. At 6-foot-7, Davis is a huge target and one that the Bears would like to utilize. He’s a sly pick late on draft day or for $1 on auction night. If he goes undrafted it won’t be long before he’s hot waiver wire fodder.

Game Balls: Week 16

27. December 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Get your free football picks againt the spread and live football odds from our friends at Doc's Sports.

QB Game Ball – Aaron Rodgers, GB – 25/37 for 404 PaYd, 4 PaTD’s
A week after sitting out with a concussion, Rodgers returned to the lineup with a bang to reward fantasy owners that were fortunate enough to advance without him in Week 15. He torched the Giants’ D to the tune his best fantasy output of the season.

QB Honorable Mention – Josh Freeman, TB – 21/26 for 237 PaYd, 5 PaTD’s (The Bucs’ signal caller threw as many touchdowns as he did incompletions).

RB Game Ball – Jamal Charles, KC – 13 carries, 77 RuYd; 4 receptions, 40 ReYd, 2 ReTD’s
For the second straight season Charles has provided a nice fantasy playoff push for his owners. He averaged nearly six yards per carry while tallying 117 total yards and finding his way to the end zone twice on Championship Sunday. He is easily a top 10 pick in fantasy leagues in 2011.

RB Honorable Mention – Matt Forte, CHI – 19 carries, 113 RuYd, RuTD; 4 receptions for 56 yards (He had surprising production against stellar Jets’ rush D).

WR Game Ball – Jerome Simpson, CIN – 6 receptions, 124 ReYd, 2 ReTD’s
To say that Simpson had a career day is a gross understatement. The third-year wideout entered the game with exactly three career catches. With that in mind Simpson was not owned in nearly any fantasy leagues, much less in anybody’s lineup.

WR Honorable Mention – Dwayne Bowe, KC – 6 receptions, 153 ReYd, ReTD (Bowe scored his 15th touchdown in a nice bounce back game after a rough few weeks).

TE Game Ball – Kellen Winslow, TB – 7 receptions, 98 ReYd, 2 ReTD’s
Winslow only scored three touchdowns all year, but made two trips to the end zone in Week 16 as the Bucs passing game had its way versus the Seahawks.  His 98-yard output is also his best effort of the season and the seven receptions ties his year’s best mark.

TE Honorable Mention – Rob Gronkowski, NE – 4 receptions, 54 ReYd, 2 ReTD’s (Gronkowski benefited from Hernandez sitting out of the Pats’ tilt in Buffalo).

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
Larry Fitzgerald, ARZ – 1 reception, 26 ReYd, 0 TD’s
It’s hard to get catches when you don’t get targets. Cardinals’ rookie John Skelton didn’t provide him his first target until after intermission and his first catch didn’t come until after the game’s final two-minute warning. It snapped a 97-game streak of games with multiple receptions that Fitzgerald was working on.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention – Michael Turner, ATL – 17 carries, 48 RuYD, 1 FL (what a nightmare night Turner had, highlighted by his goalline fumble and pedestrian 2.8 yards per carry).

Game Balls: Week 5

11. October 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Donovan McNabb, Washington - 26/49, 357, 1 TD, 1 INT
There were a few QBs who put up better numbers than McNabb on Sunday but none of them did it in such a hard fought victory. After a couple of sub-par performances against the Rams and Eagles, the Redskins needed to their veteran QB to step up and that's just what McNabb did. Washington ran for just 61 yards as McNabb led the air attack against a tough Packers team. Santana Moss caught seven balls for 118 yards while Anthony Armstrong nabbed the teams only TD on the day.

QB Honorable Mention - Alex Smith, San Francisco - 25/39, 309 yards, 3 TD, 2 Int (new offensive coordinator getting things right for 49ers.)

RB Game Ball - Ray Rice, Baltimore - 27 carries, 133 yards, 2 TD, 4 catches, 26 yards
It was only a matter of time for Rice and the Ravens to get back to running the ball. Sure, Joe Flacco looked good last year and Anquan Boldin was a nice pick-up, but the Ravens have built a reputation for pounding the ball and playing good D. And it has always worked well for them. This was Rice's first 100-yard performance of the season and it's not likely to be his last.

RB Honorable Mention - Matte Forte, Chicago - 22 carries, 166 yards, 2 TD (the more he touches the ball the better the Bears play.)

WR Game Ball - Hakeem Nicks, NY Giants - 12 catches, 130 yards, 2 TD
Nicks stepped up his game on Sunday in Houston in a big win for the Giants. Eli Manning threw for 297 yards while Steve Smith caught 89 of those and a third touchdown. Nicks not only leads his team in all receiving categories but is tops in the league amongst WRs with six touchdowns this season.

WR Honorable Mention - Malcolm Floyd, San Diego - 8 catches, 213 yards, 1 TD (who needs Vincent Jackson?)

Game Used Sock Award - Matt Schaub, QB, Houston - 16/34, 196 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
Who are the Houston Texans? The team that won impressively against the Colts back in week one or the team that got whipped byt the Giants on Sunday? Sure, a pourous defense can take a lot of the blame. But Schaub and the offense could not move the ball against New York. Arian Foster had just 11 carries for 25 yards. Andre Johnson returned from an injury and had a nice game with 95 receiving yards. And that leaves Schaub. He is certainly a better QB than those numbers against the Giants indicate and the season is not lost for the Texans who are looking for their first playoff berth. But for now all Schaub gets is a pair of nasty game worn socks.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Matt Cassel, QB, Kansas City - 16/29, 156 yards, 0 TD (so much for the undefeated Chiefs.)

Game Balls: Week 1

12. September 2010  - Published by Jim Humbert

QB Game Ball - Tom Brady, New England - 25/35, 258 yards, 3 TD, 0 Int
It seems like there has not been much talk about the Patriots this pre-season. But after the hurt they put on the Bengals on Sunday, people may just start chatting again about the best team of the last decade. Brady certainly has not missed a beat as he tore apart what was an excellent Cincinnati defense a year ago. He hooked up with seven different receivers with Wes Welker emerging as the star.

QB Honorable Mention - Peyton Manning, Indianapolis - 40/57, 433 yards, 3 TD (great numbers except for the '1' in the loss column.)

RB Game Ball - Arian Foster, Houston - 33 carries, 233 yards, 3 TD
The Texans have had a revolving door at the running back position since their inception. This pre-season has not been an exception with Foster battling Steve Slaton for carries. But the second year back may have just secured his job for a while. This was a big win for Houston and a lot of it came on the shoulders, and legs, of Foster.

RB Honorable Mention - Matt Forte, Chicago - 17 carries, 50 yards, 7 catches, 151 yards, 2 TD (anyone remember what Marshall Faulk did when Mike Martz was his offensive coordinator?)

WR Game Ball - Mark Clayton, St. Louis - 10 catches, 119 yards
A week ago Clayton was traded from a contending team, the Ravens, to a team that won four games last year and is starting a rookie QB. So what does he do in his first game? He has a career day. The Rams may not actually win many more than the four games they won last year, but they are going to get better as the season progresses. And Clayton may just be the guy for the young Sam Bradford. He's sure to be on the 'most-added' list this week.

WR Honorable Mention - Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati - 12 catches, 159 yards, 1 TD (may need T.O. to put up similar numbers in same game for the Bengals to win.)

The Game Used Sock Award - Alex Smith, San Francisco - 26/45, 225 yards, 0 TD, 2 Int
The 49ers enter the season as one of the hot picks in the NFL. The NFC West seems to be weak and San Fran looks to be on the rise. Apparently no one told all of that to the Seahawks. Smith looked bad in Seattle on Sunday. Sure the running game never got going as Frank Gore had just 38 yards on 17 carries. But Smith runs the offense and this offense only mustered two field goals against a team that is supposedly rebuilding. Sure, it's only week one and Niners, and Smith, will rebound. But now he has to do it wearing nasty, sweaty game-worn socks.

Stinky Sock Honorable Mention - Michael Turner - 19 carries, 42 yards (sure, it was against the Steelers but still....)

Fantasy Impact: Martz To Bears

2. February 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Chicago Bears named former Rams’ head coach Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator on Monday.  Known for his zany play-calling and aggressive passing, he could be just the boost that Jay Cutler needs to kick start his career and once again become fantasy relevant.

We all know about what he did during his days leading the “Greatest Show on Turf”, but what about his days since then as an offensive coordinator?

His most recent in San Francisco wasn’t the best, but the team wasn’t a great fit and once Mike Singletary took over it simply wasn’t a match.

However, before that he did have some impact in Detroit. He helped Jon Kitna pass for 4,000 yards in a season in both years he was there. Wide receiver Roy Williams enjoyed his best season as a pro, finishing with 1,310 yards, 7 TDs in 2006.  Running back Kevin Jones posted a career-high 61 catches and 520 receiving yards during the same season. Under Martz, even wide receivers Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey showed up on the fantasy radar and haven’t since.

Chicago still lacks talent at wide receiver and I don’t know if there will ever be a great passing game in the Windy City late in the season due to the elements and that is never good come fantasy playoff time. Still, here’s my take on what it means from a fantasy standpoint:

--Jay Cutler: He will get back to throwing over 4,000 yards and will see an increase in passing touchdowns.  I still expect him to turn over the ball at a high rate, but the arrival of Martz definitely keeps him in the low-end range of QB1 heading into next season. His value goes up even more if the Bears are able to improve at receiver during the off-season.

--Matt Forte: Already solid in PPR formats, Forte will be a top 5 running back in league’s where you get points for receptions. Under Martz though I am not sure his rushing numbers will go up and his total touchdowns shouldn’t see much of an increase either.

--Greg Olsen: Tight ends have never been a big part of the Martz’ offense. Still, Olsen is the most-gifted target Cutler currently has so expect him to have a large role.

--Bears wideouts: Martz will get value out of them and will be able to utilize the blazing speed the group possesses. It will be interesting to see which receivers emerge on the depth chart, but rest assured at least one of them will. Figuring out which one may be tougher than you think though.

GSI Mock Draft: Round One

28. July 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It's that time of the year again. The 6th Annual GetSportsInfo.com Mock Draft kicked off on Monday and the opening round provided some interesting insights...

ROUND ONE
1. HUMBERT - RB A Peterson (MIN)
2. FISCHER - RB M. Turner (ATL)
3. CLASGENS - RB M. Jones-Drew (JCK)
4. ANSELMO - QB D. Brees (NO)
5. MURDICO - RB M. Forte (CHI)
6. SIMS - RB L. Tomlinson (SD)
7. SCHMITT - RB F. Gore (SF)
8. WETZEL - RB D. Williams (CAR)
9. BRYANT - RB S. Jackson (STL)
10. DINSMORE - RB B. Westbrook (PHI)
11. SIMON - RB C. Johnson (TEN)
12. BROERING - RB M. Barber (DAL)

POSITION BREAKDOWNS: RB (11), QB (1)

MY PICK: This is not necessarily the year to pick third. With the difference between the No. 3 running back on my Cheat Sheet and the No. 10 running back in the rankings being so slim, I would have preferred to pick at the bottom of Round One in order to get an early pick in Round Two as the draft order snakes. Picking third I had to with a running back.  Maurice Jones-Drew is the flavor of the off-season for fantasy gurus everywhere. Why wouldn't he be? Fred Taylor has long stood in his way of being an elite fantasy runner. However, Taylor has fled to New England via free agency, leaving MJD is the man in J-Ville! In a limited role he's produced at least 1100 yards per season and at least nine touchdowns per year. With Taylor gone, he will get his chance at being the featured back. It's hard to imagine the 5-foot-7 running back getting more than 20 touches per game very often, but he will make the most of his chances.

BEST VALUE PICK: LaDainian Tomlinson battled a nagging turf toe injury last season and disappointed many owners that spent a top pick on him. With his age, career workload, and Darren Sproles all factors in projecting his stats there's no doubt that the days of 2,000 total yards are over. But LT appears healthy and will definitely be given the ball early and often in San Diego. I expect him to approach 1500 total yards and 15 touchdowns if he stays healthy. That makes him a steal at No. 7. Too many websites have him ranked way too low.

MOST LIKELY TO DISAPPOINT: It's hard to pick a player from this group as being a bust-candidate. In fact, none of them fall under that category in my mind. If I had to pick one that may disappoint though I'll go with Michael Turner. Let me be clear, I love the Falcons' offense and expect a very productive year from Turner. Yet, the team has already said they plan on reducing his workload to ensure that he stays fresh. Plus, the addition of Tony Gonzalez and another year of maturity for the Falcons' passing game leads me to believe fewer touchdown chances for Turner. Throw in a tougher slate of games this year and it's hard to imagine Turner eclipsing 2008's numbers.

FINAL TAKE: Overall, it was solid drafting for the opening round. Drew Brees was a bit of a surprise with the fourth overall selection, but at least you know you will get consistency and that is what wins. Getting a Tier 1 quarterback is HUGE this season and Anselmo may not have gotten one in the second round. I was a bit surprised to see Larry Fitzgerald go undrafted, but expect a big run on wideouts in Round Two.

Fantasy Impact: Cutler Trade

3. April 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

OK it has had some time to seek in, let's look at the fantasy implications of Cutler leaving Denver for the Windy City:

BEARS
Jay Cutler - Expect a dip in numbers, at least in the short-term. For starters, the Bears lack the wideouts and the offensive line he had in Denver. Secondly, Lovie Smith and his staff are not a pass-first offense and even if they adjust a bit it will be gradual. Cutler threw for 4,526 yards last season, don't expect him to sniff that number in 2009. On talent alone, he's still a top fantasy QB heading into next year, but before the off-season shakedown I would have argued him as top five passer.

Matt Forte - Forte's value immediately goes up with a capable signal caller at the helm. I'm not expecting his yardage totals or receptions to see a huge hike, but it's hard to imagine that he won't get more opportunities to score touchdwns and in fantasy that is what matters most. Forte is a borderline top five pick at running back for 2009 and a sure-fire first rounder.

Devin Hester - Hester really started to show signs of his big-play ability during the 2008 campaign despite the fact Kyle Orton struggled to get him the ball deep. Cutler has the arm to battle the winds of Solider Field and will be able to deliver accurate passes deep for Hester to cash in on some big plays. Still, this trade will likely lead to Hester being overvalued by many come draft day. I look at him as a solid WR3 for your fantasy team with some serious upside.

Greg Olsen - I have always been a fan of Olsen's, but for the most part he has not lived up to hype and has been inconsistent as a fantasy tight end. However, with the Bears likely to open up the passing a bit more with Cutler and the lack of receivers on the team common sense suggests that the big tight end will quickly become one of Cutler's favorite targets.

BRONCOS

Kyle Orton - It is not a given that he will start in Denver and there appears to be a QB battle brewing with Chris Simms. One thing is for sure, Josh McDaniel's is going to be a pass-first coach and will utilize a system quarterback. The Broncos will likely look for a more long-term option in the draft, but for the 2009 season Orton has the opportunity to be a nice grab as a backup quarterback. If he wins the job outright, it's safe to assume his fantasy value will see a boost.

Denver RB's - With Mike Shanahan gone, so to are the days of banking on the Broncos' backfield for fantasy success. Youngster Ryan Torrain and incumbents Selvin Young and Andre Hall will be fighting for their roster spots as newcomers Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, and J.J Arrington are all going have a role. Until somebody steps out in the competition owners should try to avoid the headaches altogether.

Brandon Marshall/Eddie Royal - Marshall has bigger problems to deal with, but the loss of Cutler coupled with his off-the-field drama has me dropping him down a tier in my rankings. The guy has huge talent, but now he also carries with him a lot of question marks. Royal will also see a dip in his numbers with the departure of Cutler. Both receivers are still worth owning, but the gamble is going to be there so draft accordingly.

2009 Fantasy Football Top 50

25. January 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The 2008 fantasy season in the books and there are plenty of questions that need to be answered, but nonetheless here's the 1st edition of the 2009 GSI Fantasy Football Top 50 rankings:

TOP TEN PICKS
1. ADRIAN PETERSON (MIN) - The winner by default. A-Pete won the rushing title and 16 TD's is hard to beat. He may not be the best overall RB in the NFL, but he remains fantasy football's best. The fact he still has room for improvement is scary.

2. STEVEN JACKSON (STL) - When he played, Jackson was one of the best scorers in fantasy football. In fact he finished the year in the top 3 of fantasy points per game. The problem is he only played in 12 games and was less than 100% in half of those. New Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo says his offensive philosophy is to "to be able to run the football and protect the quarterback." That should spell success for the Rams' franchise back.

3. MATT FORTE (CHI) - Having a top five pick is not what it used to be, but you can't go wrong taking the Bears' newest weapon there. He has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and can break big plays. The Bears' offense will continue to focus on giving him opportunities.

4. MAURICE JONES-DREW (JCK) - Fred Taylor's days in Jacksonville appear to be over, leaving the bulk of the duty to MJD. He shined down the stretch with Taylor sidelined and now could have the chance to do so for the length of a season. He not only is rock solid at the goalline, but Jones-Drew also is one of the best receiving backs in the league.

5. CHRIS JOHNSON (TEN) - The rookie was sensational, picking up right where he left off in college at making explosive plays. If it weren't for the touchdown machine Lendale White stealing his chances at the stripe, Johnson would rival A-Pete for the #1 pick.

6. MICHAEL TURNER (ATL) - The best free-agent pickup during last year's off-season won't make it past Round 1 in 2009. He finished second in the league in rushing and put up four mutliple-TD games. Throw in a score in 7 of his last 8 games in '08 and his value is high. I am a bit worried about his 370 carries this year though as he could wear down.

7. LARRY FITZGERALD (ARZ) - Fitz has moved to the top of my list at receiver with his dominating playoff performance. He is as solid as they come and a safe bet to be near the top of the league again next year. Through three playoff games Fitzgerald is up to 419 receiving yards, 23 catches, and five touchdowns. That's following six scores in his last five regular season games. Pretty impressive. Getting quarterback Kurt Warner back could prove key though to him going this high.

8. FRANK GORE (SF) - I am still holding out for Gore to follow up on the 2006 campaign. To do so he's going to need to avoid all the bumps and bruises though. With Mike Singletary back and Mike Martz gone in San Fran, expect Gore to become the center of attention in the 49ers' attack (even more so than before).

9. DEANGELO WILLIAMS (CAR) - Even with Jonathan Stewart lurking, Williams was able to put up some amazing numbers this season in the high-powered Panthers' running attack.  He made 20 trips to the end zone and rushed for 1,518 yards. A repeat performance may be tough, but he's certainly worth top 10 recognition.

10. ANDRE JOHNSON (HOU) - Johnson makes my top 10 and is really 1A on my Cheat Sheet at receiver heading into next season.  It's pretty impressive to think about only six running backs had more yards than Johnson did through the air. That's enough for me to take him in late in the first round.
