Recap: Free Agency - Day 3

15. March 2013  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Let's take a look at some of the biggest movers in free agency from a fantasy football perspective:

DONE DEALS
RB Steven Jackson (Falcons)
– Atlanta was the ideal spot for Jackson to land the whole time. It appeared that the Packers were going to land the top free agent running back, especially after Tony Gonzalez decided not to retire. With the Falcons Jackson will not only have a chance to make some big plays, but will be involved in the passing game. Expect his TD total to rise significantly in the season ahead. He may very well have just cracked my top 10 at running back heading into 2013 fantasy drafts.

QB Matt Cassel (Vikings)
– It didn’t take long for Cassel to find a new home after he was finally officially cut by the Chiefs. Minnesota was rumored to have interest when Kansas City dealt for Alex Smith and as it turns out those rumors were legit. Cassel will provide veteran insurance/tutelage to Christian Ponder. His he has no fantasy value.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
WR Greg Jennings
– Jennings was hoping to command $10-$11 million per season on the free agent market, but reality is starting to sync in for the 29-year old. It appears as if his options are down to Minnesota and resigning with the Packers. Jennings spent Thursday night with the Vikings’ brass and is likely to make a decision in the next 24-48 hours.

WR Nate Washington – Tennessee is trying to deal Washington, but with a soft market the team is more likely to simply release him. He’s set to make $4.2 million this season the Titans’ staff didn’t like his effort down the stretch of last season.  He has enough talent to be a nice complimentary piece in the right system.

QB Kevin Kolb
– Kolb is due a $2 million roster bonus on Saturday and expectations around the league are that he will be cut by the Cardinals. Arizona brought in Drew Stanton and appeared poised to draft a quarterback. The Jets are one of the teams that could be a potential landing spot if he is indeed released.

QB Jason Campbell – The Browns, Jets and Bears are the three favorites for the 31-year old signal caller. He was a backup in Chicago last season and is likely going to stay one the rest of his career. He would compete for the job in Cleveland where the new regime is lukewarm on second-year signal caller Brandon Weeden.

TE Dustin Keller – The visit Miami did not yield an agreement as the Dolphins were only willing to offer the one-dimensional tight end a 1-year deal. The Giants and Bills remain possible destinations.

Look Ahead: Tennessee Titans

5. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Over the past two seasons wide receiver Kenny Britt has missed 17 games due to injury, including 13 last year after suffering an ACL injury. While his durability has been a concern there’s never been a doubt around his talent. Britt has found his way into the end zone 15 times in 31 career games and has averaged over 70 yards per contest during his limited action the past two campaigns. Before going down early in Week 3 in 2011, Britt opened eyes with 14 catches for 271 yards and 3 TD’s during the first two weeks. When healthy, Britt has top 15 fantasy wideout potential.

SCHEDULE
The Titans square off with four playoff teams from 2011 in its first six games of 2012. The bye week doesn’t come to Week 11 which will keep owners from worrying too much about covering the bye week for their Titans’ players on draft night. Tennessee will play six of the 10 teams that allowed the fewest points to fantasy running backs in 2011, including the Texans (No. 2) twice. The tough schedule is even tougher come fantasy playoff time with Houston in Week 13, the Jets in Week 15 and at the Packers in Week 16.

STUD
Chris Johnson
was one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy football for much of 2011. He followed up the NFL lockout by holding out, missing nearly the entire preseason. It resulted in him being out of shape and unprepared. While he did recover to post his fourth straight 1000-yard campaign, Johnson’s touchdown total dipped from 28 total scores the previous two seasons to just four scores a year ago. A strong finish to the year coupled with a strong commitment to the team’s offseason program leave room for optimism entering 2012.

DUD
After scoring five times during an eight-game stretch Damian Williams popped up on fantasy owners radar midway through the 2011 campaign and proved to be a dependable option at times at a WR3 or flex option in deeper leagues. Entering his third season would suggest that he still has some upside. However, with Britt returning from an injury and the team investing a first-round pick in another wideout it’s hard to imagine Williams carrying much fantasy value entering 2012 unless someone else goes down.

SLEEPER
One of favorite sleepers from a year ago, Jared Cook got off to a slow start before a monster finish in 2011. During Weeks 15 and 16, key weeks in most fantasy leagues, Cook rewarded those that exercised patience by grabbing 17 balls for 273 yards and a touchdown.  The talent is there, but for Cook to emerge as a fantasy option he needs to find more consistency. He’s not a bad option for those owners that opt to wait around until the late rounds to worry about a tight end, but he’s far from a proven commodity.

NEW ADDITION
The explosive Kendall Wright can stretch defenses with the best of them and that was something that the Titans’ passing attack was desperately missing when they spent a first-round pick on him in April’s draft. He figures to slide into the slot right out of the gate for the Titans. He’ll need to pick up on the offense quickly to make an immediate impact and will benefit greatly if Britt is completely healthy and Cook can keep defenses honest over the middle. He’s a nice late-round pick in yearly leagues and much more in dynasty formats.

POSITION BATTLE

Veteran Matt Hasselbeck enjoyed a decent first season in the Music City, but many close to the organization favor second-year slinger Jake Locker as the team’s quarterback. Expect Hasselbeck to start the season as the starter, yet it is only a matter of time before the Titans get an extended look at last year’s first-round selection. Locker has even more fantasy appeal when you consider his ability to run the football. Hasselbeck is a risky option even as a backup as he may not be starting by time you need him as a bye-week filler. Locker is worth stashing.

BENCH BUILDER
With so much attention being shined on Britt’s return to health and the arrival of Wright to the team, Nate Washington is likely to fall through the cracks in most fantasy drafts. While he’s not likely to match 2011’s career-high numbers (74 receptions for 1,023 yards and 7 TD’s), owners need to remember that he averaged 44 catches for 628 yards and six TD’s per years during his previous two seasons as a Titan. Even with his targets going down Washington will make for a solid backup WR on nearly any roster.

Waiver Wire: Week 4

27. September 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

All right it’s Tuesday and that means it time to hit the waiver wire. Here’s guys you should look at listed in the order I like them position-by-position.

PICK UP WEEK
WR Nate Washington (TEN)
- With the devastating news that Kenny Britt is out for the season with ACL and MCL injuries, Nate Washington officially becomes the Titans' top wideout. If he can handle the extra attention from opposing defenses, he'll pay dividends.

QB
Jason Campbell (OAK)
- A nice match-up play for Week 4 against Pats' secondary
Vince Young (PHI) - Michael Vick's handcuff is now healthy. Vick owners take notice
Curtis Painter (IND) - not much value, but appers to be the new Colts' starter

RB
Bernard Scott (CIN)
- Cedric Benson's suspension makes him the Bengals' starter
Kendall Hunter (SF) - going to get more touches with Frank Gore hobbled and struggling
Montraio Hardesty (CLE) - working his way in to a share of the workload in Browns' backfield
Earnest Graham (TB) - 20 catches on 24 targets makes him roster worthy in PPR leagues
Stevan Ridley (NE) - slowly working his way into Pats' mix of carries; big upside

WR
Donlad Jones (BUF)
- the third Bills' receiver to fly into the fantasy radar this year
Torrey Smith (BAL) - capable of huge games, but still question his consistency
Steve Smith (PHI) - low risk investment that will likely see an increased role in Philly
Victor Cruz (NYG) - will have some value in Giants' attack with Dominic Hixon out for season

TE
Randy McMichael (SD)
- with Gates' foot flaring up McMichael is going to be used
Jered Cook (TEN) - also stands to benefit from Britt's injury by receiving more targets

Playoff Picks: Conference Championships

15. January 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Three more freakin' games, that's all we have left of the NFL in 2008. This weekend's slate looks nothing like I predicted in the NFC, but I pretty much nailed it in the AFC. Either way it makes for an interesting  Sunday of football. Here's how I see the games unfolding this weekend:

PHILADELPHIA (9-7) at ARIZONA (9-6-1) - Eagles favored by 4
Outlook: For the thrird straight week it's hard to find anybody that wants to pick the Cardinals, but they just keep finding ways to win. In my mind they've already beaten two teams that are just as good as Philly.

The Eagles are riding high, but outside of drilliing an overrated and unfocused Cowboys' team to get into the playoffs, outlasting a Tavaris Jackson-led Vikings' squad, and a Giants' offense that failed to find an idenity what have the Eagles done? All that's right, they tied the freakin' Bengals, got drilled by the Ravens, and blew a must-win game late in the year to a weak Redskins' team.

Arizona looked terrible down the stretch of the regular season, but post-season surge of the defense and the committment to get a running game going has breathed life into the Cardinals at the perfect time. They looked impressive against Atlanta and shut down Michael Turner. Then they went to Carolina and did something eight other teams couldn't do this year as they beat the Panthers. And not just beat them, but drill them.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead before rolling the Cards on Thanksgiving Night, but this time its in Arizona and believe it or not I am going to think that makes a difference.

My Pick: CARDS 24, EAGLES 20

Fantasy Clicks: PLAY - Donovan McNabb, Kurt Warner, Brian Westbrook, Edgerrin James, Tim Hightower, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek, David Akers, Neil Rackers; DON'T PLAY - Correll Buckhalter, Kevin Curtis, Reggie Brown, L.J. Smith, Eagles DEF, Cardinals DEF

BALTIMORE (11-5) at PITTSBURGH (12-4) - Steelers favored by 6

Outlook: The Steelers have already beaten the Ravens twice this season and beating a team three times in one season is a tough task, but it's not unheard off. Just ask the 1999 Jaguars, they went 14-2 before with both losses coming to the Titans, then they lost to Tennessee in the playoffs. It happens. Baltimore has had quite a run to get this point, but they look tired. They haven't had a bye since Week 2 and the veterans on the defense have played at such a high level I think that could hurt them.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is enjoying fresh life in the running game as Fast Willie Parker finally gets to 100%. His speed to the outside could present problems for the Ravens, who are likely to be without linebacker Terrell Suggs. Ben Roethlisberger is going to be playing looser than Joe Flacco, but that could lead into turnovers. To me that is the key to this game. If Baltimore is going to have a chance they will need to limit Big Ben and capitalize on mistakes. I don't see the Steelers, who have the best homefield advantage in the league, making too many mistakes though.

My Pick: STEELERS 20, RAVENS 13

Fantasy Clicks: PLAY - Ben Roethlisberger, Willie Parker, LeRon McClain, Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, Derrick Mason, Heath Miller, Jeff Reed, Matt Stover, Steelers DEF, Ravens DEF; DON'T PLAY -Willis McGahee, Mewelde Moore, Mark Clayton, Nate Washington, Todd Heap
