Texans Take Posey

29. April 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Former LaSalle Lancer and Ohio State Buckeye wide receiver Devier Posey was drafted in third round of the NFL Draft on Friday night with the 68th overall pick.

Posey, who played in just three games in 2012, finished his senior season with just 12 catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns. He missed the first 10 games of the 2011 season after receiving two separate five-game suspensions for selling OSU football memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos, and receiving money for work he did not complete during a summer 2011 job.

“It was something I learned my lessons from, I’m moving forward,” Posey said in a press conference shortly after being drafted. “It’s made me a better man and a better person. I’m just excited just to get down to Houston and get to work.”

During his sophomore and junior campaigns as a Buckeye Posey combined for 113 receptions for 1,676 yards and 15 touchdowns. Had he played more games in 2011 there was no doubt he would have been taken higher than Round 3. However, most draft experts did not project him to go as high as he did when the Texans selected him.

The former five-star Lancer standout was one of the best wide receivers to come out of the Queen City over the past decade. He finished with 48 receptions for 776 yards (16.2 ypc) and eight touchdowns during his breakout senior campaign in 2007 which led to his opportunity to play at Ohio State.

Posey has a chance to make a quick impact for the Texans and will be able to compete for a starting spot opposite of Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson. The young wideout realizes that he has plenty to learn and playing alongside one of the best players at the position is a great opportunity.

“I’ve been watching Andre Johnson since 2002 in the National Championship when they played Ohio State,” Posey said of Johnson. “He’s a hell of a player, and just watching his highlights over the years, it’s just a person that I emulate the way he plays and the tenacity that he plays with.”

A fresh start is just what the doctor ordered for Posey and with his college career behind him he appears ready to turn the page. The Texans are hoping that taking a chance on him will pay dividends and if it’s up to Posey there’s no doubt it will.

“I’m willing to do anything,” Posey claimed. “If they come in there and tell me I got to run down and be a gunner on punt, I’ll run through a wall for them.”

Sullinger Headed To NBA

4. April 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Official release from Ohio State...

Jared Sullinger, a forward on the Ohio State men’s basketball team, has elected to make himself available for the 2012 National Basketball Association Draft. Sullinger made the announcement Wednesday at Value City Arena.

In two seasons at Ohio State, Sullinger scored 1,282 points (17.3 ppg.) and grabbed 717 rebounds (9.7 rpg.) He played in 74 career games, starting 73. His scoring total rates No. 29 all-time while his rebound total ranks No. 11 in Ohio State history.

His career point total is the third most in Ohio State history over the first two seasons of a career. Jerry Lucas scored 1,381 points in 1960 and 1961. Michael Redd tallied 1,361 in 1998 and 1999.

Sullinger earned numerous Big Ten and national honors during his time in Columbus. A two-time consensus first-team All-American, Sullinger was named the 2011 National and Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was a two-time first team All-Big Ten honoree.

Final Take: Final Four

1. April 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

With a day to let all the great hoops sink in, here are some of my final thoughts on the Final Four:

KENTUCKY
--The team hit buckets when they needed too, finishing the game with a 57 percent field-goal percentage.  The last team to shoot that good in a Final Four game was Syracuse in their 2003 win over Texas on their way to a National Championship.

--Anthony Davis scored 18 points to go along with 14 boards and five rebounds. The last player to get double-digit totals in points and rebounds with at least five blocks in a game was Kevin Durant for Texas in 2007.

--Despite having Michael Kidd-Gilchrist sit for 17 minutes of the game due to foul trouble the Wildcats prevailed. Much of the credit needs to go to senior Darius Miller, who finished with 13 points and several big plays in his 27 minutes.

--You have to like the way the Wildcats responded after the Cardinals tied the game at 49 as they answered with a 9-1 run to put the game away.

--Normally a strong free-throw shooting team, the Wildcats knocked down just 11-of-20 (55%) free-throw attempts. That could come back to bite them if not corrected on Monday.

LOUISVILLE
--Rick Pitino had the right game plan but not enough horses. Still, with most of the roster intact next season the future is bright.

--The Cardinals dominated the glass with 19 offensive rebounds and 15 second-chance field goal attempts, but they were just 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) on second-chance opportunities.  Louisville missed too many easy shots all night long (16 layups/dunks).

KANSAS
--The Jayhawks won this game in the paint outscoring the Buckeyes 32-16 inside. Kansas blocked eight Ohio State shots inside the paint, including five taken by big man Jared Sullinger.

--Kansas is a comeback team, but keeps squeaking it out down the stretch. They outscored Ohio State 13-7 in the final five minutes of the game Saturday. The Buckeyes shot 2-of-10 during this stretch. For the tournament the Jayhaws have held opponents 19.5 percent shooting during the game’s final five minutes.

OHIO STATE
--The Buckeyes built a 13-point, first-half lead and took a 34-25 cushion into the locker room. However, Thad Matta got outcoached in the second half as Bill Self made the adjustments necessary and Matta failed to respond in time.

--Jared Sullinger scored just 13 points and hit just 5-of-19 shots on the game. It was a disappointing finish to the sophomore who returned this season to take care of unfinished business.
