Waiver Wire: Week 8

23. October 2012  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

With Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Houston all on bye this week, it poses some lineup problems. Compile that with the inevitable injuries, and you’ve gotta monitor the waiver wire closely. Here are some players to target this week.

QB
Brandon Weeden, CLE – Nobody was more critical of the Browns rookie QB than I was. And, I’m still not sold on him as a long-term starter. But, you can’t deny his numbers over the last few weeks. Quietly, Weeden has put up steady fantasy numbers throwing 2 TDs in three consecutive games. This week, the Browns play San Diego, so you can expect more of the same from Weeden who is a decent bye week fill-in.

RB
Larod Stephens-Howling, ARIZ – I was a week premature in calling for Stephens-Howling to show up. After his Week 6 bust, many owners dumped him already, but after his Week 7 100+ yard, 1 TD-performance, many owners will be back asking for his forgiveness. Grab LSH and start him this week.

Cedric Peerman, CIN – Yes, the Bengals are on a bye this week, but Peerman did find the end zone last week, and may be the best option in the anemic, and uninspiring Bengals backfield. If you’re a homer, or in desperate need, Peerman could be an option for you.

WR
Santana Moss, WAS – Moss was once an elitish wide receiver. And now, he’s on the waiver wire in 75% of leagues. After his 2-TD performance last week, he will be a top target this week. One caveat on Moss though, he is still not the top targeted player for the Redskins, but he’s certainly worthy of grabbing and stashing as he does get red zone targets.

Kevin Walter, HOU – Houston is on bye this week, which means many owners will overlook Walter. Grab him this week in preparation for the Texans Week 9 matchup against Buffalo where Walter should put up nice numbers. Always think ahead in fantasy football for true success.

TE
Dustin Keller, NYJ – Now that he appears to be healthy, Keller is a must grab. He’s a big, athletic tight end, that Sanchez looks to often. For leagues that require tight ends to be started, Keller is a must have, especially after his 7 catches for 94 yards this past week.

Chris Cooley, WAS – Wait, what? Didn’t he retire? Yes, but with Fred Davis out for the year, the Redskins are about to sign Cooley, who is supposedly in game shape, knows the system and could make an impact for your fantasy squad. Don’t start him this week, or even next. Wait and see how he does, but grab the savvy vet now.

GSI Mock Draft: Rounds 6-7

4. August 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

This is the point of the draft where every player has baggage, but also where gems can be found:

RECAPS: Round One | Round Two | Round Three | Round Four | Round Five

ROUND SIX
61. BROERING - TE K. Winslow (TB)
62. SIMON - QB M. Ryan (ATL)
63. DINSMORE - WR A. Bryant (TB)
64. BRYANT - RB C. Wells (ARI)
65. WETZEL - WR E. Royal (DEN)
66. SCHMITT - RB W. Parker (PIT)
67. SIMS - WR B. Edwards (CLE)
68. MURDICO - QB M. Schaub (HOU)
69. ANSELMO - WR A. Gonzalez (IND)
70. CLASGENS - RB K. Moreno (DEN)
71. FISCHER - TE O. Daniels (HOU)
72. HUMBERT - RB D. Ward (TB)

ROUND SEVEN
73. HUMBERT - WR L. Evans (BUF)
74. FISCHER - RB F. Jones (DAL)
75. CLASGENS - WR D. Driver (GB)
76. ANSELMO - WR L. Moore (NO)
77. MURDICO - WR S. Holmes (PIT)
78. SIMS - QB J. Cutler (CHI)
79. SCHMITT - WR L. Coles (CIN)
80. WETZEL - WR H. Ward (PIT)
81. BRYANT - TE C. Cooley (WAS)
82. DINSMORE - TE G. Olsen (CHI)
83. SIMON - WR S. Moss (WAS)
84. BROERING - RB J. Lewis (CLE)

MY PICKS: I added a third running back and a third receiver in Rounds Six and Seven by nabbing Knowshon Moreno and Donald Driver. One of these two guys will be my starting flex option. Moreno has competition in Denver, but I think he's going to have the most immediate impact of the rookie runners. I love him as a RB3, but he may not get going quickly enough to be a lock as a RB2. Driver is not flashy, but he is consistent. With Aaron Rodgers being so highly regarded you have to figure Drive is safe pick here and will provide nice depth.

BEST VALUE PICKS: Matt Ryan (nice pick this late); Anthony Gonzalez (ready to step up w/Harrison gone); Felix Jones (will see increased role in Dallas); Greg Olsen (on the rise).

MOST LIKELY TO DISAPPOINT: Antonio Bryant (QB questions); Willie Parker (declining role); Santana Moss (too inconsistent); Jamal Lewis (tank is empty).

FINAL TAKE: These rounds are the most fun to me. You are still drafting guys that will start regularly in many cases so the margin for error is slim. Typically, I go for younger players with more upside at this point. However, I had to settle for a veteran in Driver after some of the young receivers I was targetting fell off the board.

Line Up Locks: Week 14

5. December 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here is our Line-Up Locks for Week 14. It's either the last week of your regular season or you've made the playoffs. Making the playoffs is always good, but now, more than ever, is where you have to make the right choices, and unfortunately some of your fantasy stalwarts, maybe even the players who brought you this far cannot be counted on this week. Here's a quick look at those who has favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Matt Cassel @ Sea
My take: Perhaps you saw what Romo did to this awful Seahawk defense last week. Cassel has proven he can produce top tier numbers and this will be one of those weeks.

--Aaron Rodgers vs. Hou
My take: Rodgers, like Cassel is one of those guys who is best to start when the match up is right. Well, the match up is right this week.

--Tyler Thigpen @ Den
My take: Let the amateurs in your league laugh at you when you bench your regular for Thigpen in the playoffs. You'll be laughing last as this match up is too good to pass up for Thigpen.

Lock Out:
--Jake Delhomme vs. TB
My take: Here's some fantasy math for you. Bad match up + inconsistent QB=playoff loss.

--Tony Romo @ Pit
My take: Do you have the guts to bench your fantasy stud in the playoffs? If you have a better QB with a better match up, then you should.

--Matt Schaub @ GB
My take: Don't rush to get Schaub back in your lineup. Wait and see how he does and wait until the match up is better.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:
--Joseph Addai vs Cin
My take: I'm not sure the Bengals have enough healthy d-linemen to even field a team at this point and I'm not sure that even if they did, that it would matter. Get Addai in your lineup this week.

--Peyton Hillis vs. KC
My take: This guy is quickly becoming the waiver wire find of the year. Play him this week.

--Ronnie Brown @ Buf
My take: As the Dolphins have stumbled a little down the stretch, I think they go back to what got them this far – running the ball and trick plays. Brown will benefit from that.

Lock Out:
--Clinton Portis @ Bal
My take: Benching a fantasy stud like Portis, are you kidding? No, I'm not kidding. If you have no other options, then obviously risk it and see what Portis can do, but if you have a choice between Peyton Hillis and Portis, I go with Hillis as Portis has an awful match up and is hurting.

--Marion Barber @ Pit
My take: Again, the same theory applies here that applies to Portis. If you have another option use it. Barber has a toe injury. See how LT has done with his toe injury and Barber goes against a nasty Steelers defense. Be worried.

--Willie Parker vs. Dal
My take: He's always one misstep away from leaving the game and with him splitting carries with Mewelde Moore, I just don't feel comfortable counting on Parker in the playoffs.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:
--Randy Moss @ Sea
My take: 100+ yards and at least 1 TD. Count on it.

--Greg Jennings vs. Hou
My take: Put him in and maybe even Donald Driver too.

--Roddy White @ NO
My take: He hasn't score in three weeks, but those who've followed this column know how much I love this guy. This week he will score against a very bad Saints defense and he will once again go over the century mark.

Lock Out:
--Terrell Owens @ Pit
My take: I do not think that the Cowboys will put up a lot of yards or score much in this game, so TO makes for a very average play this week.

--Santana Moss @ Bal
My take: Bad match up this week for a team that has struggled to score lately.

--Braylon Edwards @ Ten
My take: Don't start anyone on the Browns this week as they go against a good Titan defense and do so with Ken Dorsey under center. Yikes.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Tony Gonzalez @ Den
My take:  You've probably been starting, but if not, get him in this week and enjoy.

--Dustin Keller @ SF
My take: I didn't mention much of the Jets offensive players this week, but it's a very friendly match up and Keller makes for a very sneaky play this week.

--Dallas Clark @ Cin
My take: Here's what I wrote last week about Clark: The Colts are on fire and Dallas Clark will dismantle the Browns this Sunday. Change Browns to Bengals.

Lock Out:
--Chris Cooley @ Bal
My take: Bad match up for a bad offense.

--Heath Miller vs. Dal
My take: Look elsewhere for points at the tight end position.

--John Carlson vs NE
My take: Too inconsistent and the Seahawks offense is too bad to be counted on.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Jets @ SF
--Titans @ Cle
--Colts vs. Cin

Lock Out:
--Falcons @ NO
--Dolphins @ Buf
--Jaguars @ Chi

Lineup Locks: Week 11

14. November 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here is our Line-Up Locks for Week 11. Bye weeks are finally over and this week's games have a lot of great match ups. I only list three, but there are plenty of good options this week. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Matt Ryan vs. Den
My take: Ryan has performed like a veteran for the very underrated Atlanta Falcons. This week his match up is so good, you have to consider Ryan a top 10 QB this week. Expect a couple of scores and at least 200 yards from him.

--Donovan McNabb @ Cin
My take: McNabb should have time to shred the Bengals defense, and can still scramble away from any pressure the defense might put on him.

--Trent Edwards vs. Cle
My take: Edwards has been hot and cold but is poised for a very nice week in what could be an offensive shootout.

Lock Out:
--Chad Pennington vs. Oak
My take: Last week I hyped up Jake Delhomme to exploit the Deangelo Hall-less Raider secondary and that didn't happen. The Raiders are a mess on offense, but have actually overperformed on defense all year. I think the Dolphins will use a lot of Ronnie Brown this week in order to win the game.

--Eli Manning vs. Bal
My take: I think the Giants will win this game, but I don't think Eli does much to warrant a start this week.

--David Garrard vs. Ten
My take: The Jags have been a huge disappointment and with their season slipping away face one of the toughest defenses in the NFL. Until I see improvement from Jacksonville's o-line, I am leaving Garrard on the bench.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:
--DeAngelo Williams vs. Det
My take: I say start every Panther you can in this game, if possible as Detroit can't stop anything. It might be a shootout, but I think Williams could be the best of the scorers for Carolina this week.

--Tim Hightower @ Sea
My take: This year's rookie running backs has been a fruitful crop. Hightower is no different. While the Cardinals are a pass-first team, I think Hightower gets 100 yards and a score this week in what could be a closer game than some think.

--Marshawn Lynch vs. Cle
My take: Lynch has been a disappointment, but I think he comes back in a big way this week. As long as he gets 20 touches, he'll be good for 100 yards and a score.

Lock Out:
--Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Ten
My take: The Titans are the second best team in the NFL in rush defense. Factor in how bad the Jags o-line has been and I don't like MJD's chances this week.

--Earnest Graham vs. Min
My take: Several factors should keep Graham on the bench. Warrick Dunn is back from an injury, as is Cadillac Williams. Plus, Graham is gimpy and questionable with a bum knee and the Vikings are the #1 rush defense in the NFL.

--Justin Fargas @ Mia
My take: The match up isn't particular ominous for Fargas, but Darren McFadden is allegedly going to play this week and, in case you haven't been paying attention, the Raiders offense is atrocious. I would not start any Raiders at this point.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:
--Santana Moss vs. Dal
My take: Clinton Portis is likely not going to play, which means the Skins are going to have to air it out in order to beat the Cowboys and I think Moss will benefit from increased touches, especially in PPR leagues.

--Steve Smith vs. Det
My take: I realize that Smith and Delhomme had a great match up last week and were fairly disappointing, but this week, at home, versus a lousy Lions team, you can count on a great game from Smith.

--Roddy White vs. Den
My take: The Broncos can't stop anyone from scoring and moving down the field. The Falcons' offense is very good at home. And White has been one of the most consistent WRs in terms of production that no way you don't start him this week.

Lock Out:
--Vincent Jackson @ Pit
My take: This is a tough match up for the Chargers in general, and as a result, I think you can expect very little from Jackson this week.

--Bernard Berrian @ TB
My take: I have said several times in this column how underrated the Tampa defense is and for this reason, I think it will be a low-scoring affair. Berrian is a borderline starter every week, but not this week.

--Marvin Harrison vs. Hou
My take: He's a Hall of Famer, for sure, but he isn't that Hall of Fame talent any more. I don't think Harrison warrants a start in anyone's lineups now that bye weeks are over.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Chris Cooley vs. Dal
My take:  As mentioned, without Portis, Jason Campbell will look to Cooley often as a safety valve.

--Owen Daniels @ Ind
My take: Daniels is a fantasy stud and gets a great match up this week.

--Kellen Winslow @ Buf
My take: He was targeted 11 times last week by new QB Brady Quinn and put up over 100 yards and a score. Expect nice numbers again this week from Winslow.

Lock Out:
--Greg Olsen @ GB
My take: The Packer secondary is very good and so are their linebackers. I'm not confident in anyone on the Bears defense this week.

--Todd Heap @ NYG
My take: Yes that was Todd Heap in the end zone last week, but don't get too excited and do something foolish like start him.

--Kevin Boss vs. Bal
My take: And yes that was Kevin Boss in the end zone last week, but again, don't do anything foolish like start him.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Carolina vs.Det
--NYG vs. Bal
--Phi @ Cin

Lock Out:
--Buf vs. Cle
--Atlanta vs. Den
--Was vs. Dal

Line-Up Locks: Week 9

31. October 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here is our Week 9 edition of Line-Up Locks. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Kurt Warner @ StL
My take: This game could be a real shootout. Warner should be one of the top performing quarterbacks of the week.

--Chad Pennington @ Den
My take: The Broncos allow the second highest amount of points in the NFL AND they will be without Champ Bailey. Pennington will light up the Broncos this week.

--David Garrard @ Cin
My take: Garrard has really turned up his play of late and that trend will continue against a Bengals defense that is injury-depleted.

Lock Out:
--Derek Anderson vs. Bal
My take: Expect a low-scoring effort from everyone in this game. Anderson might get a TD, but he will be pressured and confused which will lead to low yardage totals and turnovers.

--Jason Campbell vs. Pitt
My take: Campbell will be tested in this game. With their confusing schemes and blitz packages, the Steelers will keep Campbell’s production to a minimum.

--Brett Favre @ Buf
My take: This could be one of the best games of the week. Buffalo is stinging from their first conference loss and will look for revenge against the Jets. Favre has not looked like himself lately, which is reason for concern if you’re a Favre owner.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:
--Earnest Graham @ KC
My take: Warrick Dunn is injured which means Graham will get almost all the carries against the league’s worst run defense. Graham will go off this week.

--Maurice Jones-Drew @ Cin
My take: You invested in an early pick for MJD and this will be the week you’ll be glad you did. Jones-Drew will exploit a porous Bengals defense.

--Matt Forte vs. Det
My take: Forte is pretty much an every week starter as it is, but if somehow you play matchups with him, the match up doesn’t get any better for this rookie stud.

Lock Out:
--Cedric Benson vs. Jax
My take: Benson has looked better than Chris Perry, but he’s still not worth a start, especially this week.

--Steve Slaton @ Min
My take: Slaton will face the toughest match up of his NFL career this week and likely will be unproductive.

--Edgerrin James @ StL
My take: It’s a nice match up for James, but he’s been losing carries and TDs to rookie Tim Hightower. James is not really a viable fantasy starter any more.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:
--Roddy White @ Oak
My take: If you haven’t been paying attention, Matt Ryan and Roddy White have become quite a duo. White has to be an every week starter at this point. Get him in your lineup.

--Donnie Avery vs. Ari
My take: Last week I mentioned that I still wasn’t sold on Avery. I am now ready to say that he has convinced me that he’s worth starting; this week especially in what could be a shootout.

--Anquan Boldin @ StL
My take: Along with Larry Fitzgerald, a healthy Anquan Boldin must be in your lineup and in a potential shootout, expect lots of looks and lots of potential TDs.

Lock Out:
--Terrell Owens @ NYG
My take: (This is the same thing I said last week, but it says it all, so I’ll copy and paste it) Did you see how bad the Cowboys offense looked without Tony Romo? They will be without him again this week, and that means, it's time to put TO on your bench. He'll probably whine about it, but do it anyway.

--Santana Moss vs. Pit
My take: Usually Moss is a worthy starter, but this week, play the match up and move him to your bench as Pittsburgh’s defense should keep the scoring low.

--TJ Houshmandzadeh vs. Jax
My take: In a PPR league, Housh still has value, but otherwise, it might be time to consider trading him or benching him, especially this week.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Greg Olsen vs. Det
My take:  The Bears, all Bears, have a great match up. Olsen makes for a fantastic this week.

--Anthony Fasano @ Den
My take: As mentioned earlier, the Broncos defense is susceptible and Pennington will have time to throw the ball and Fasano could benefit from that.

--Kellen Winslow vs. Bal
My take: Winslow has stunk as a fantasy option this year, but expect him to step up his performance. While it’s a tough, low-scoring match up, Winslow could find the end zone.

Lock Out:
--Heath Miller @ Was
My take: The Redskins will keep Roethlisberger from having time and Miller will not be a factor in this game.

--Tony Gonzalez vs. TB
My take: The Bucs defense is very undervalued. They are stout and face Tyler Thigpen. As a result, I just don’t see any Chiefs receiver being worth a start.

--Chris Cooley vs. Pit
My take: Cooley might still be your best option, but keep your expectations to a minimum for him this week.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Minnesota vs. Hou
--Jacksonville @ Cin
--Tampa Bay @ KC

Lock Out:
--Miami @ Den

Line-Up Locks: Week 8

24. October 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here is our Week 8 edition of Line-Up Locks. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:

--Matt Schaub vs. Cin
My take: Schaub has been on a roll (his third appearance in a row on LL too). He's definitely gotta be considered one of the top 10 QBs to start this week against a woeful Bengals defense that is without its top LB in Keith Rivers now.

--Matt Cassel vs StL
My take: Reports of the Patriots demise were greatly exaggerated. I expect at least a pair of TDs and over 200 yards from Cassel again this week.

--Jason Campbell @ Det
My take: The Lions are a better team at home, granted, but that makes them lousy instead of awful. Campbell will throw two TDs this week.

Lock Out:
--Derek Anderson @ Jax
My take: A very tough road game for all the Browns in general. With no Kellen Winslow (who is suspsended), that's one less safety valve for the mistake-prone Anderson to turn to. This one could get ugly.

--Ben Roethlisberger vs. NYG
My take: Big Ben has been one of the most sacked QBs in the NFL this year and he faces the team with the most sacks. That spells trouble.

--Kurt Warner @ Car
My take: The Panthers don't get the respect they deserve on defense. Their pass defense, especially, is very good, and with this being a road game, I think Warner could struggle, even with Anquan Boldin returning.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:

--Steve Slaton vs. Cin
My take: See what I said about Schaube above and the same applies to Slaton, but perhaps even more. The Bengals do not stop the run and Slaton will exploit that. I would even perhaps condone picking up Ahman Green if you needed a quick fix this week, as even he could have value this week.

--Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Cle
My take: I like all of the Jacksonville's offense in this game, but because they will likely run and run and run some more, I did not include David Garrard on this list. Jones-Drew and even Fred Taylor have to be considered as must starts this week.

--Thomas Jones vs. KC
My take: There's something about the Jones' brothers that drives fantasy owners nuts. Thomas and Julius are inconsistent. But this week, Thomas should put up strong numbers against a bad Chiefs team.

Lock Out:
--Jamal Lewis @ Jax
My take: Lewis has a tough task ahead of him, trying to get yards against a Jacksonville defense that is stout in its own stadium. Expect less than 75 yards from Lewis and no score.

--Darren McFadden/Justin Fargas @ Bal
My take: This running duo has been fairly effecient, but not spectacular. This week, the effeciency ends. Both Fargas and McFadden are not good options this week. If you had to start one of them, Fargas would be the better choice.

--Dominic Rhodes @ Ten
My take: I predicted a nice performance from him last week and I was right. This week, listen to me again because Rhodes will face a defense that is very difficult to run on, on the road. Plus, watch for Addai's status as there's a chance he could return this week, although, I expect Rhodes to get most of the carries.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:

--Calvin Johnson vs. Was
My take: I saw everything I needed to see from Johnson last week on his 96-yard TD catch. Plus, Johnson was targeted 10 times last week. In a PPR league, Johnson is a sure fire starter, in most leagues, he makes a nice start this week.

--TJ Houshmandzadeh @ Hou
My take: Despite not having Carson Palmer throwing the ball to him, Houshmandzadeh has been consistently good. It would be nice if he scored more TDs, but in PPR leagues, he's fantastic and in straight yardage leagues, he's a good start too. He might even find the end zone this week.

--Santana Moss @ Det
My take: Moss is quickly becoming the more consistent WR named Moss this year. And this week, he will be the better Moss to start.

Lock Out:
--Terrell Owens vs. TB
My take: Did you see how bad the Cowboys offense looked without Tony Romo? They will be without him again this week, and that means, it's time to put TO on your bench. He'll probably whine about it, but do it anyway.

--Donnie Avery @ NE
My take: He's had a nice couple of weeks and might still be on your waiver wire, but I'm not sold on him as a reliable fantasy starter, especially this week facing a rejuvenated Patriots defense.

--Dwayne Bowe vs. NYJ
My take: Bowe is ridiculously talented in a keeper leagues should be held onto no matter what. But this year, with god-knows-who at QB, Bowe's value continues to plummet. Tyler Thigpen, or Bobby Thigpen or Steve DeBerg might be throwing to him this week. Who knows? And it doesn't matter.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Owen Daniels vs. Cin
My take:  He scored last week and he'll score again this week as the Bengals have historically struggled to cover tight ends.

--Chris Cooley vs. Cle
My take: As Campbell and Moss will find each other regularly, so will Cooley and Campbell.

--Anthony Fasano vs. Buf
My take: This is a sneaky play in fantasy this week, but I think the Dolphins are starting to be more dimensional and as the Bills will give Ronnie Brown more attention, this will open up the field for Fasano.

Lock Out:

--Heath Miller vs. NYG
My take: Not this week.

--Kellen Winslow @ Jax
My take: Winslow is suspended this week, so he must be moved to your bench and would've made a bad start in this matchup anyway.

--Zach Miller @ Bal
My take: I generally like Miller as a fringe every-week starter, but not this week in this matchup which will be a low-scoring affair.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Baltimore vs. Oak
--Jacksonville vs. Cle
--Washington @ Det

Lock Out:
--Miami @ Buf
--Arizona @ Car
--San Diego @ NO

Game Balls: Week 4

28. September 2008  - Published by Jim Humbert

Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City - 28 carries, 198 yards, 2 TD
Last week I nominated him for a Dirty Sock, not because of his performance but because his constant whining did nothing but lead to another huge loss. Today, he justified his complaints as the Chiefs beat the Broncos.

Brett Favre, QB, NY Jets - 24/34, 289 yards, 6 TD, 1 Int
It is amazing how everyone jumped off the Jets/Favre bandwagon after losses to the Patriots and Chargers. Look, the Jets are good and Favre is great and although they may not quite be an elite team, they will continue to destroy bad defenses like those of the Cardinals. Most people already knew that Favre likes Jericho Cotchery who had two touchdowns today. And now Laverneaus Coles is in the works with three touchdowns against Arizona. Don't underestimate the Jets.

Santana Moss, WR, Washington - 8 catches, 145 yards
You probably are not hearing it for the first time here, but the NFC East is a very tough division. Just when it looked as if the Cowboys were unstoppable, the Redskins completely outplay them. Jason Campbell threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Clinton Portis ran for 121 yards. And the Redskins defense came up with a late interception to seal the win. After scoring in the first three games, Moss did not find the endzone today. But he still had a big game against a tough rival.

Earnest Graham, RB, Tampa Bay - 20 carries, 111 yards, 1 TD
If you take Graham's numbers and add them to the 63 yards that Warrick Dunn ran for, you'd think the Bucs won in a landslide. But that was not the case against the Packers. It took that running game along with some really good defense to overcome the play of their quarterback. After throwing 67 times in a victory in Chicago last week, Brian Griese completed just 15 of 30 passes on Sunday with three interceptions. So Tampa won with a good running game and a strong defense despite their bad quarterback play. Sound familiar?

Lance Moore, WR, New Orleans - 7 catches, 101 yards, 2 TD
Apparently Drew Brees really doesn't care who he throws the ball to as long as they are open. Moore had the best game on Sunday among nine different guys that caught a pass against the 49ers. Robert Meachem had 99 yards and scored. Devery Henderson had just one catch but it went for 81 yards. What's even stranger? Reggie Bush had five catches but for only 7 yards.

Jake Delhome, QB, Carolina - 20/29, 294 yards, 2 TD
As long as Jake is healthy the Panthers should be pretty good. Muhsin Muhammad had a great day with 147 yards and a touchdown. Steve Smith also scored and had 96 receiving yards. And while the running game is good for the team it stinks from a fantasy perspective. DeAngelo Williams had 16 carries for 57 yards. Jonathan Stewart had 14 carries for 52 yards. However, the edge might go to the rookie Stewart as he scored for the fourth time this year.

The Game Used Sock Award
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston - 3 catches, 38 yards
For the second week in a row Johnson was a non-factor for the Texans. Last week he had just two catches for 29 yards in the loss to the Titans. And today he didn't do much better in the loss to the Jaguars. Sure, he's the top receiver on the team and perhaps the only star so he's seeing a lot of tough coverage. But five catches in two weeks is unacceptable. He's dropping catches that his shaky quarterback can't afford to lose. And he is just not stepping up when the team needs him to. He may be able to turn things around and finally help this franchise win, but for now all he gets is a stinky sock.

Trendspotter: Washington @ NY Giants

3. September 2008  - Published by Jim Humbert

Here are a few interesting points that may help you decide what to do regarding the first game of the 2008 season:

 - Clinton Portis scored in both games against the Giants last season. He has six touchdowns in seven career games against the division rival.
 - Santana Moss had three receptions in each of the games in 2007. He totaled 82 yards in the first match-up and followed that up with 75 in NY. He did not score in either game.
 - Brandon Jacobs has just one touchdown in five games against the Redskins. He scored the first time he faced them back in 2005.
 - Last season in Washington Reuben Droughns scored twice - both times from the 1-yard line. He finished the game with a total of 3 yards.
 - Eli Manning does not have great numbers versus the Redskins. He has a QB rating of 66.3 in seven career games. The most yards he has thrown in one game against Washington is 256 and he has finished with less than 200 four times. He has never thrown more than one touchdown in a game against the rival.
 - After scoring in each of the first six weeks last year, Plaxico Burress had just four touchdowns in the Giants' final 10 games. He also scored just once in the post season and he waited until there was just 35 seconds left in the season to do that!
 - Last season these teams split their two match-ups, with the visitors walking away victorious each time.
 - The Redskins have won six of their last seven opening games. The Giants have lost three of their last four and five of their last seven to start the season.

GSI Mock Draft: Round 7

19. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
The 7th Round of the GSI Mock Draft officially marks the midway point. Now is the time to build depth and fill out the starting line-up.

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3 | ROUND 4 | ROUND 5 | ROUND 6

Here's Round 7:
61. PREUTH - Santana Moss - WR
62. CLASGENS - LenDale White - RB
63. HUMBERT - Fred Taylor - RB
64. BOLTON - Chris Chambers - WR
65. DINSMORE - Chris Cooley - TE
66. MURDICO - Matt Forte - RB
67. SIMS - Calvin Johnson - WR
68. SIMON - Hines Ward - WR
69. WETZEL - Dwayne Bowe - WR
70. FISCHER - Kevin Smith - RB

My Pick: LenDale White became my fourth RB. With my top tight ends off the board and with two WR's already in my line-up, I opt to build depth at running back, by following up last round's pick on Selvin Young with White. That gives me Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew and the two back-ups. Either player makes an ideal flex and could easily catapult into my line-up. I am not crazy about White's 3.7 YPC in last year and he's nearly a non-factor in the passing game, but his 303 attempts last year was sixth best in the NFL and with Chris Brown out of the equation he should continue to shoulder the bulk of the load.

Biggest Reach: This may have been the best all-around round of the draft. There is not a single player that was taken out of position. In fact, many of the picks have a tremendous amount of upside for the spot - Taylor, Forte, Johnson, Bowe, and R. White.

Final Take
: I am a big fan of building depth at the most coveted of positions - RB and WR - rather than going after DEF and second-tier TE's just to fill out a line-up. In this round at least, my fellow owners followed suit. Through seven rounds we have yet to see a DEF or PK, but that is about to change.

Fantasy Football RTW - Devin Thomas

16. July 2008  - Published by Chris Murdico

The Washington Redskins drafted Devin Thomas with their second round pick (34th pick overall) this past April. Thomas decided to declare for the draft after his junior season at Michigan State. (Totally coincidental that I picked two former Big Ten players for my first two installments on this subject.) In his second season as a Spartan he set a school record by catching 79 balls for 1,260 yards and eight TDs. In 13 games last year, he went over the 100 yard receiving mark seven times, and over 130 yards receiving in four of those seven games. Those numbers were good enough reasons for the Redskins to draft him. Question is, are they good enough reasons for you to draft him in your fantasy football league this year?

Thomas will likely be the No. 2 guy in Washington with Santana Moss being the primary receiver. With him being a big guy with good speed, Thomas could have a good season. That could, however, depend on how well his QB, Jason Campbell progresses. Campbell has a strong arm which will help with any deep routes Thomas is sent on. Scouts have said that Thomas lacks route running skills, something he will need to learn if he wants to be successful in the NFL, and on your fantasy team.

The competition for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart will come from Antwan Randle El. The Redskins will most likely play Randle El at the slot position, so that frees up time for Thomas to play out wide. In addition to competing for receptions with Moss, he'll also have to compete with TE Chris Cooley. Even with all of that, Thomas should have a good season, especially if he improves on his route running. He's got the skill set to become a good fantasy football player and could be a nice sleeper pick late in the draft.

Rookie receivers don't have nearly as much success as rookie RBs do that are stepping into a team and starting right away, but they can still contribute to your team, especially late in the season once they've established a connection with their QB. Expect Thomas to have a season, one worth having him as maybe your flex player if your league offers that. As the season progresses he could even move up to a good option as a WR3, maybe even a WR2 if the Redskins offense can get on a roll. Rookie WRs are hard to predict, but if there's one to take a chance on late in your draft, it could very well be Devin Thomas.
