Phillies Take Game One

23. October 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Relive some of the best World Series memories ever with GETSPORTSRADIO.COM: WIRE TO WIRE

The team that has won the first game of the World Series has went on to be crowned champions in 10 of their last 11 years. The Phillies hope to make it 11 of the last 12. Philadelphia took Game 1 on Wednesday, beating Tampa 3-2. It was a game they needed to win. For starters, in order to win the best-of-seven-series they had to take at least one in Tampa. Secondly, with a questionable rotation it doesn't appear as if the Phils could affrod to lose with ace Cole Hamels on the mound.

The Rays produced 22 homers in their first 11 postseason games, but Wednesday, the heart of their lineup —B.J. Upton, Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria— went hitless in 12 at-bats without a ball leaving the infield.

Hamels has been amazing. We all knew he was good, but after winning his fourth straight playoff start in dominating fashion he is now a superstar. In Philadelphia they are comparing him to another great Phillies' lefty, Steve Carlton. While he has a bit more to go before I can put in that Hall of Fame company you can't deny the fact that his 1.55 ERA effort this October has been outstanding.

Scott Kazmir, who was drafted two spots ahead of Hamels in the first round of the 2002 Amateur Draft, struggled through is six innings allowing three runs on six hits and four walks.

Chase Utley and Carl Crawford both went yard, but for the most part the offenses both struggled in the clutch all night long.

Both bullpens did great, yet the Phillies still possess the edge with Brad Lidge closing out games. He made the Rays look silly with his nasty slider working a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The drop off starts now though for the Phillies as after Hamels it gets a bit rough. Brett Myers will to go to the hill in Game 2 and he'll be opposed by right-hander James Shields for the Rays. It is a must-win game for the Rays as they can ill afford to leave town down 0-2.

Dice K Dominates

11. October 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Boston Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the ALCS with a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays behind a stellar pitching from Daisuke Matsuzaka, who took a no-hitter into the seventh innning. Homefield advantage is everything in this series and the Red Sox went into Tropicana Field and did what they had to do to get the road win. Road wins have come frequently this year for  Matsuzaka. In fact, the Red Sox' ace has nine decisions on the road this season and each of them has been a win.

Winning on the road in the playoffs is not hard to do, but somebody needs to tell the Red Sox. Terry Francona's bunch has now won six straight playoff games away from the friendly confines of Fenway Park.

Game 2 of the ALCS is Saturday night and is a must-win for the young Rays, who can ill afford to head North down 2-0.  Boston turns to their most-seasoned playoff pitcher, Josh Beckett.  The Rays will counter with young lefty Scott Kazmir. He has pitched fairly well against the Red Sox over the course of his young career, but struggled against them this season, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four starts. For his career Kazmir is 6-7 against Boston with a 3.62 ERA in 21 starts.

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

10. August 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

STUDS OF THE WEEK
At least Carlos Lee's owners were treated to an amazing week before possibly losing their star slugger for the season to a broken pinkie. He mustered 12 hits in his 23 at bats leading up to the injury on Saturday, including 3 HRs and 11 RBIs. Daisuke Matsuzaka threw his longest outing of the season on Saturday night to beat the White Sox. Over his past two starts he is 2-0 with 14 IP, 1.93 ERA, and 0.93 WHIP. Add to that 15 K's and Dice-K made his owners very happy!

DUDS OF THE WEEK
The All-Star game seems much longer than a month ago, at least for Aaron Cook. The Rockies' starter got shelled again on Saturday night, allowing allowed six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Cook has a 7.36 ERA in his last three starts and looks like himself again. So much for Adam Dunn stepping up with Griffey out. In his first full week of playing without Junior in his career, Dunn batted .154 and struck out 9 times in 28 plate appearences while failing to drive in a single run.

KEY INJURIES
Carlos Lee (finger) - might be out for the season
Ryan Braun (back) - day-to-day; did not play again on SUN

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

6. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

STUDS OF THE WEEK
Brewers' shortstop J.J. Hardy is heating up after a slow start to the season and he may have hit his boiling point this week as he batted .577 and had 1.1923 slugging percentage. Hardy hit 4 HRs and drove in 8 runs over the past week. Blue Jays' ace Roy Halladay reminded owners this week why he is consistently a top 5 fantasy hurler. The former Cy Young winner went 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA, 0.69 WHIP while striking out 13 and walking just one batter in 16 masterful innings.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
Cubs' rookie outfielder Kosuke Fukudome is mired in a slump of late. He did hit a homer this week, but batted just .167 while striking out 10 times. Look for him to continue to be a bit streaky as he adjustes to the league. Darrell Rasner may have pitched his way out of the Yankees' rotation over the past two weeks. The right hander is 0-3 with 9.00 ERA and 2.27 WHIP during that span.

KEY INJURIES
Dan Uggla (ankle) - day-to-day after spraining ankle

Rays For Real

2. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

With the baseball season reaching its halfway point earlier this week, it's the Tampa Bay Rays that find themselves with baseball's best record, 50-32.

Tampa Bay has been a refreshing team to watch, as they've matched a great core of young talent with the right mix of veterans to acheive a winning chemsitry.

With their win on Tuesday night over Boston, the Rays are now 2 1/2 games up in the AL East, their largest lead of the season.

"These guys aren't like they used to be," Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield said. "They're pretty good over there."

The Rays have done it with good pitching, improved defense and timely hitting. They have also avoided getting caught in the highs and lows they have experienced during the best start in franchise history.

"It's still a long road, and we have to take it day to day," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said.

A closer look at the stats, bring an even greater appreciation of Maddon's team.  Of the core players in the line-up, only one, catcher Dioner Navarro (3.16), is hitting above .300. However, four different players - Evan Longoria (47), Eric Hinske (44), Carl Crawford, and B.J. Upton (41) - have over 40 RBI's.

The team lacks a 10-game winner, but has five pitchers with 6+ wins - starters Andy Sonnanstine (9-3), Matt Garza (7-4), Scott Kazmir (7-3), James Shields (6-5), and reliever J.P. Howell (6-0). Reliever Troy Percival (19 saves) was just placed back on the 15-day DL due a nagging hamstring, but the team has depth in the pen as they boast three other players with 2 saves a piece - Howell, Grant Balfour, and Dan Wheeler.

There is a long way to go, but count me as Rays' believer.

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

15. June 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
STUDS OF THE WEEK
Seldom do we see a catcher pop in this category, but the Pirates' Ryan Doumit stated his case loud and clearly this week by batting .429 with 4 HR's and 7 RBI's. Not too shabby for a guy fresh off the DL.  The Tigers' Armando Galaragga (6-2) is another surpise stud after picking up another win on Friday night against Cleveland. The rookie allowed three hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out five. Opponents are hitting just .173 against him.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
Something is clearly not right with Brad Penny. The Dodgers' right-hander has lasted just 9 2/3 innings over his past two outings going 0-2 with 9.31 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in that span. Fantasy owners still holding out hope for the Blue Jays' Lyle Overbay to get going may consider otherwise when looking at his production so mid-way through June. The first baseman has managed just 8 hits in his last 43 at bats and has 0 HR's and 5 RBI's during the stretch.

KEY INJURIES
Albert Pujols (calf): hopes to be back in 3 weeks
Brandon Webb (hip): questionable for 6/17 start
David Ortiz (wrist): out until at least early July
Alfonso Soriano (hand): on DL until mid-July
Victor Martinez (elbow): expected to miss a month

Carlos Pena (finger): targeting a return next weekend
Rafael Furcal (back): another setback keeps return in doubt
Frank Thomas (quadriceps): aims to be back in early July
Jair Jurrjens (ankle): may be headed to 15-day DL

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

1. June 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
STUDS OF THE WEEK
Few players in the history of the game have had an career opening as great as the one that the Reds' highly-touted Jay Bruce just turned in following his call-up on Tuesday. The Reds' slugger had 13 hits and six walks in his first 28 plate appearences. He has scored 10 runs and stole two bases while driving in six and going yard twice, including a game-winning walk-off homerun on Saturday. The Rays' Scott Kazmir has been lights out since returning from a stint on the DL with an elbow injury, including two stellar performances this week. Kazmir logged 14 innings in two starts, stirking out 16 and walking just three as he posted a 0.64 ERA and picked up two wins in the process.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
Over the past few seasons the Dodgers' Jonathan Broxton has been amongst the game's top setup men. However, the big right-hander just turned in a week that he would like to forget. He blew his third save of the week on Saturday against the Mets and has posted a 0-1 record, 5.79 ERA, and 1.71 WHIP in that span. The Marlins' Dan Uggla had a rare off-week as he managed just 5 hits in 28 at bats and struck out 12 times in that span. Uggla still is sporting a .300 average and has hit 16 HR's on the year, making him on of fantasy's best second baseman.

KEY INJURIES
David Ortiz (wrist): set for MRI; risky play this week
Conor Jackson (concusion): likely out until June 6-8 series
Jake Peavy (elbow): Expect a mid-June return at best
Daisuke Matsuzaka (shoulder): placed on 15-day DL on 5/30
Chone Figgins (hamstring): disabled until at least mid-June
Travis Hafner (shoulder): out until mid-June or later
Eric Byrnes (hamstrings): On DL w/tear in both hamstrings
Matt Holliday (hamstring): Eligible to return June 10
Rafael Furcal (back): Return up in air; slow to recover
Troy Percival (hamstring): placed on 15-day DL on 5/29

Fantasy: Trend or Mirage?

29. May 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

We go around the horn and look at some players that are having early fantasy success and discuss whether or not you can expect to see it continue:

1B: Jason Giambi, Yankees
He is on fire of late as he's hitting .412 over the past two weeks, including 4 HR's and 7 RBI's. The homeruns aren't much of a surprise. He now has 11 long balls on the season, but don't expect the batting average to stay anywhere near the .412 clip. The fact that even after all of this success he is still only .244 on the season should tell you all you need to know...MIRAGE

2B: Ian Kinsler, Rangers
Few second baseman have been as hot of late as Kinsler. Over his last 91 at bats he's batting .308 with an impressive 5 HR's and 18 RBI's helping the Rangers and fantasy owners alike to victories. He is currently on a 12-game hitting streak and knocking the cover off the ball while batting leadoff for Texas. Kinsler remains a high-end fantasy option at the position and though he may cool off a bit, expect solid production all year long...TREND

3B: Kevin Kouzmanoff, Padres
Kouzmanoff has been highly touted since his arrival to San Diego and over the past week he has is starting to live up to the hype as he has went yard four times. He now has 8 HR's and 22 RBI's on the year. Don't forget he hit .317 with 11 home runs in the second half last year, making him a nice sleeper going forward...TREND

SS: Jhonny Peralta, Indians
Peralta has hit three homers in his past five games to help power the Indians. He now has 11 HR's on the year. There has been little debate over Peralta's power potential. Still, his .225 average and the fact he's only batted above .270 once since 2002 is hard for some owners to overlook and suggests struggles ahead...MIRAGE

OF: Hunter Pence, Astros
Pence broke on to the scene as a rookie in 2007 in a big way and after a slow start his sophomore campaign has picked up momentum. He has managed 34 hits in 93 ABs in May and hit 6 HR's and 21 RBI's in that span. Playing in an explosive offense and in a hitter's park, there's no reason no to expect more of the same ahead for Pence...TREND

OF: Carlos Quentin, White Sox
Quentin now has 47 RBI on the year, with seven in his last four games. That puts him on pace for 146 RBI's on the year. Listen, there is no doubt about Quentin's potential as he could easily be a 30-30-100-100 guy. However, injuries remain a concern and as long as you don't expect him to continue at his current pace you won't be left disappointed. He's a budding star...TREND

OF: Nate McCloth, Pirates
McLouth started May with a .342 average and saw it drop as low as .298 before getting it back to .310. He has been one of fantasy baseball's biggest surprises early on, but maybe it's time to start think about selling him while his value is still high...MIRAGE

C: Bengie Molina, Giants
Catcher is one of the hardest positions for a fantasy owner to fill, but Molina owners have been pretty lucky so far with their low-end starting option. Over the past 21 days Molina is batting .400 and has hit 2 HR's and 16 RBI's. Still, the Giants' lineup is terrible and the fact that he has never hit above .300 tells me that he is going to fall from his current .339 average probably to something closer to his three-year average of .284...MIRAGE

SP: Scott Kazmir, Rays
He won his fourth straight start, striking out 10 in seven innings to lead the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays over the Texas Rangers 7-3 Monday night. He has given up two runs over 26 innings during his winning streak (0.69 ERA). The elbow problems that sidelined him April appear to be a thing of the past. Expect him to be a fantasy ace as long as he remains healthy...TREND

SP: Bronson Arroyo, Reds
He has won his last two starts and last three decisions dating back to May 10. He has a 1.67 ERA in that span. The WHIP and ERA are both dropping down quickly as he pulls back to .500 at 4-4. After a slow start to year, Arroyo is once again finding his way back into line-ups.  He's a streaky pitcher though and the fact that his career record is 59-63 tells you that he's nothing more than average as a fantasy starter. Shop him while he is on the good side of things...MIRAGE

SP: Rich Harden, A's
Harden has been outstanding since his return to health from a shoulder injury. After picking up two wins in first two games back, Harden received a no-decision in a pitcher's duel vs. Roy Halladay on Wednesday night. There's no doubt about Harden's ability, but it seems every time he gets rolling, he's winds up right back on the DL. Sell high and play it safe...MIRAGE

RP: Jose Valverde, Astros
Houston's closer is 10 for 10 in save opportunities during the month of May while posting 1-0 record, 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 15 K's in 14 innings pitched during that span. He pitched for the first time since taking a liner off his head Friday and recorded the save Wednesday night against Philly and appears to have avoided something much more serious. Valverde saved 47 games last year for the D-Backs and is on pace for 45 saves in '08...TREND

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

25. May 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
STUDS OF THE WEEK
The Reds' Adam Dunn continued to hit a hot bat this week as he clubbed 3 HRs and drove in 5 RBIs while batting .473 to help the Reds turn around their West Coast trip. On the mound, it was the Angels' Jered Weaver that got our attention. The right-hander picked up a pair of victories while posting a 1.35 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and striking out 13 batters in 13 1/3 innings.

DUDS OF THE WEEK

It was a rough week for Mariners' pitcher Carlos Silva as he lost both of his starts while allowing 20 hits, 2 walks in just 10 innings of work. The 10.80 ERA and 2.20 WHIP hurt many owners that were hoping for good things on his two-start week. Despite an impressive start to the season, Diamondbacks' rookie outfielder Justin Upton has fallen on hard times of late. He has mustered just one hit and four walks in his last 26 plate appearences on his way to .047 batting average.

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

27. April 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The NFL draft may have diverted your attention, so here's everything you need to know for Week 5:

STUDS OF THE WEEK
The Phillies are happy with their new closer Brad Lidge. He has yet to allow on in 11 innings this season and converted four saves over the last week making his fantasy owners happy too. Lidge's former teammate, Astros' 1B Lance Berkman, joins him on our stud list this week. Berkman has homered four times over his past six games, driving in 12 runs and hitting .500 in that span.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
Manny Corpas
, who was stellar in the Rockies' playoff run last year, lost his job as the Rockies' closer after blowing two more saves this past week. In three innings of work this week Corpas allowed five runs. It was a week of flukes for the Blue Jays' Alex Rios. After a routine off day on Tuesday he caught the flu bug and missed Wednesday only to return to the lineup and get tossed early on in Thursday's game. All of this left Rios' owners with just four games of production.
