Flashback: 1994 Preakness Stakes

16. May 2013  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Orb won the Kentucky Derby, now the colt is going to try and do something that only has happened twice in 60 years, win the Preakness Stakes from the rail.

The last time was in 1994 when Tabasco Cat along with five-time Preakness winners, D. Wayne Lukas (trainer) and Pat Day (jockey) teamed up that year and celebrated a rare finish. Having pulled the dreaded inside post position (1), Tabasco Cat rallied to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. It is the only horse to do so over the last 53 years. He did so by beating Derby winner Go For Gin in dramatic fashion.

While it ran the 1 3/16-mile race in 1:56.40, it entered a small club of horses to finish in the first post. Bally Ache won the Preakness from inside the rail in 1960.

Flashback: Weber's Costly Timeout

18. March 2013  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It's hard to believe that it has been 20 year's since Chris Webber called his infamous timeout:

WEBBER TIMEOUT COSTS MICHIGAN
North Carolina won the NCAA Tournament, but the final will forever be remembered more for Chris Webber's blunder. NC led 73-71 when Webber, Michigan's All-American sophomore forward, rebounded Pat Sullivan's missed free throw with 19 seconds left. Webber traveled, but no referee called it. Given a second chance, he hurriedly dribbled across midcourt, stopping in front of Michigan's bench. Then he signaled for a timeout with 11 seconds remaining. The only problem was that the Wolverines were out of timeouts...MORE

Joe Montana Made Me Cry

22. January 2013  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It was 24 years ago on this day that Joe Montana made me cry...again:

Super Bowl XXIII
San Francisco 20, Cincinnati 16
The score was only 3-3 at halftime, but fireworks were in store. After the Bengals went ahead 16-13 on Jim Breech's 40-yard field goal with 3:20 left in the game, Joe Montana saved the 49ers in perhaps the greatest individual moment of his career. The otherworldly cool, efficient quarterback drove his team 92 yards in 11 plays, culminating with a 10-yard TD pass to John Taylor with only 34 seconds left.

BENGALS 21, BILLS 10
The Cincinnati Bengals beat the spread Sunday because they beat the spread. They beat the Buffalo Bills, 21-10, in the AFC championship game at blustery Riverfront Stadium because their rapidly maturing defense anticipated and adjusted to Buffalo's "spread" offense before the Bills even deployed it. Favored by 4 points, the Bengals won by 11 because they replaced a linebacker and a run-oriented safety with a cornerback and a pass-oriented safety at the outset of the second half...RECAP (LA Times)

Flashback: 1992 All-Star Game

6. July 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It's hard to believe it's already been 10 years since this happpened...

The 2002 game at Miller Park in Milwaukee delivered a forgettable conclusion - a 7-7 tie after 11 innings - what happened next echoes to this day.

A beleaguered Commissioner Bud Selig, sitting in his home stadium, no less, had no choice but to call the game a draw after each team had run out of pitchers. Fans chanted "Let them play!" but to no avail.

Selig's solution? An interesting twist for the following season: dangling the carrot of home-field advantage in the World Series to the winning team. That, in turn, brought roster expansion so managers would have enough pitchers in case of extra innings.

But the 2002 game itself remains a controversial subject.

"It had taken over 11 big league years, but Tom Seaver finally was able to cross off one of the few achievements (a no hitter) that had eluded him in his magnificent career. And at last, the specter of what might have been turned into the sweet fulfillment of finally reeling in the big one." - Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball (1978)
