Seahawks Add James

24. August 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Seattle Seahawks siged free agent running back Edgerrin James to a one-year, $2 million deal.

To clear a path for James the Seahawks cut veteran T.J. Duckett, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

James, 31, ranks 11th in career rushing in the NFL, but he is coming off the least productive season of his career. He started seven games for Arizona last season, gaining 514 yards as rookie Tim Hightower took more of the workload.

Julius Jones appears to be set to be the team's starting running back, but James will get into the mix along with camp star Justin Forsett.

The Seahawks reportedly also considered adding Warrick Dunn, who like Duckett played under new head coach Jim Mora Jr. in Atanta, but in the end the team opted for James.

FANTASY SLANT: Jones is still the best option, but James could be worth a stab in the late rounds. Forsett is looking like a deep sleeper, particularly in PPR formats. Duckett was projeted for about 8-10 touchdowns and was likely selected in deeper leagues that already have drafted. He no longer warrants any fantasy consideration.

Game Balls: Week 3

21. September 2008  - Published by Jim Humbert
Here is a look at some of Sunday's best performances:

Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami - 17 carries, 113 yards, 4 TD, 1 pass TD
Well it looks like Brown is healthy as he took control of the big upset against the Patriots. His partner Ricky Williams played well too with 98 rushing yards. The real question about Brown though, is did anyone start him on their fantasy team against the Pats?

Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta - 23 carries, 104 yards, 3 TD
As long as the Falcons get to play teams like the Lions and Chiefs, Turner is going to be a stud. Jerrius Norwood looked good to with 105 total yards. And Roddy White caught five passes for 119 yards and scored.

Brian Griese, QB, Tampa Bay - 38/67, 407 yards, 2 TD, 3 Int
The Bears took away the Bucs running game and Griese made them pay through the air - eventually. Tampa won with a field goal in overtime to give Griese the win in his return to the windy city. With Joey Galloway inactive, Antonio Bryant stepped up to catch 10 balls for 138 yards.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Buffalo - 23 carries, 83 yards, 2 TD, 4 catches, 31 yards
While quarterback Trent Edwards had a more than servicable game (279 yards, 1 TD) it is really Lynch who is the key to the Bills offense. Yes, their win today was close against what is considered a weak Oakland team. But it is still a victory and Buffalo is 3-0 for the first time since their AFC Championship days.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Cincinnati - 12 catches, 146 yards, 1 TD
It took three weeks but the Bengals offense finally scored a touchdown through the air thanks to Housh. Of course his partner, Chad Who?, did not do much better with just 29 yards on three catches. And the Bungals still lost. Heck, if anything this Game Ball should go to Amani Toomer whose catch set up the game winning field goal.

Jacksonville RB's - 45 carries, 228 yards, 1 TD
The Jags finally hit the ground running and it paid off with a big win against the Colts. Fred Taylor led the team with 121 yards on 26 carries. Maurice Jones-Drew had 107 yards and a touchdown as well as 59 receiving. Everyone seems to know that the Jags win by running, it just makes you wonder what really went wrong those first two games.

Brandon Marshall, WR, Denver - 6 catches, 155 yards, 1 TD
Yes, he caught 12 fewer passes this week than last but he had other things on his mind. If this guy could stop getting into legal trouble - and stop getting suspended - he could be a real stud. Regardless, his team is off to a great start with three impressive wins against some pretty good clubs.

Julius Jones, RB, Seattle - 22 carries, 140 yards, 1 TD
Another big games for the new Seahawk as the passing game is still sputtering. Sure, 140 yards against the Rams is like 60 against a real defense, but it is still a good day's work. It is important to note that T.J. Duckett also ran for 79 yards and scored twice - both time in goalline situations.

A Basket of Game Used Socks
I can't decide who stunk it up the most on Sunday, so you can decide for me. Here are your choices:
Matt Schaub, QB, Houston - 17/37, 188 yards, 3 Int. Sure Andre Johnson dropped a bunch of balls but still...
Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City - 24 carries, 121 yards, 1 TD. Actually great numbers LJ, but your team still got creamed - by the Falcons!
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh - 13/25, 131 yards, 1 Int, 9 sacks. The Steelers are a run first team - try doing some yourself Ben.
Bill Belichick, Caoch, New England - Loses 38-13 to Miami. Without Tom Brady this guy looks like he's coaching the Browns.
Derek Anderson, QB, Cleveland - 14/37, 125 yards, 1 TD, 3 Int. Hey Derek! DEREK! Can you say 'Brady Quinn?'

Alexander on his way home?

11. March 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The writing is on the wall for Shaun Alexander in Seattle. On Monday, the team signed its second free-agent running back of the offseason as they inked former Cowboy Julius Jones to a four-year deal.  Jones joins fellow veteran T.J. Duckett as new additions as the Seahawks desperately try to reshape their backfield. The team averaged 4.0 yards per carry in 2006 and just 3.8 yards per carry last season and much of that blame has been placed on the 2005 NFL MVP, Alexander, who has had back-to-back injury riddled seasons.

The 30-year old running back managed just 716 yards last season, his lowest total since taking over for Ricky Watters as the team's starter in 2001. With Maurice Morris coming off a productive season and Jones and Duckett now in the fold, Alexander's place on the team is in serious question. While the injuries have contributed to the injuries many critics have questioned Alexander's heart and effort in recent times. He did not look like himself last season and showed zero explosiveness as he hit the holes.

Alexander's contract calls for him to make $4.475 million in base salary next season and he would count $6.75 million against the Seahawks' salary cap. If Seattle released Alexander, it would not have to pay him his salary; however, it would have to account for three-fifths of his signing bonus under the salary cap. That bonus was $11.5 million, meaning there is still $6.9 million that must be accounted for under the cap.

If he were released, that $6.9 million could either count against the salary cap in one lump sum in 2008; or if the Seahawks chose to designate him a post-June 1 release, he would count $2.3 million against the cap in 2008 and $4.6 million in 2009, according to the Seattle Times. That suggests the team will be in no hurry to make a decision.

ESPN's John Clayton suggested that his days in Seattle are over and speculated that two teams that are at the top of the list as potential suitors as being the Cincinnati Bengals, Alexander's hometown team (Florence, KY), and the Houston Texans, who lack any type of consistency at running back.

The Bengals' Rudi Johnson was equally as disappointing last season and former first rounder Chris Perry hasn't see too much of the football field over the past two seasons.  Second-year running back Kenny Irons is coming off major knee surgery and veteran Kenny Watson is a role player at best.

Alexander, if he is indeed cut, is not going to be able to demand to much on the open market and could be a nice fit for a team looking to take a low-risk flyer.
