Holt Lands In Jacksonville

21. April 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Scratch Jacksonville off the list of team's looking to add a veteran presence at wide receiver. The team inked free-agent Torry Holt to a three-year, $13 million deal that could reach $20 million with incentives, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Holt chose the Jaguars over the Titans. The Bears, Eagles, and Giants reportedly never showed interest.

The 33-year old is coming off the worst season of his career. He mustered just 64 receptions for 796 yards and 3 TDs. Holt failed to yield a single 100-yard game and failed to reach the 90-catch plateu for the first time in six years and did not amass at least 1000 yards in receiving for only the second time in his 10-year career.

While Holt is a big upgrade for the Jaguars, who were entering the draft with Mike Walker and Dennis Northcutt atop the depth chart at the position, the run-first system and playing on grass for the first time in his career doesn't bode well for his overall numbers.

Holt's signing appears to be a major acquisition, considering Jacksonville's recent track record with receivers.

The Jaguars released first-round flop Matt Jones last month after he violated a plea agreement from a July 2008 drug charge, and they decided not to re-sign former first-round pick Reggie Williams. The team also whiffed with its signing last offseason of free-agent Jerry Porter, who turned out to be a major contributor to the team's poor chemistry in the locker room. Porter caught 11 passes (earning nearly $1 million per catch) last season.

PATS, PANTHERS TALKING PEPPERS (NFL.com)
The trade that sent Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs appears to be only the first phase of some major wheeling and dealing by the New England Patriots this offseason. JAGS CUT TIES WITH JONES (Florida Times Union)
Wide receiver Matt Jones, a first round draft pick in 2005, was waived by the Jaguars on Monday after he served several days in jail last week for violating the terms of his probation on a drug charge. Jones led the team with 65 catches for 761 yards last year in the first 13 games

Wide receiver Terrell Owens, whose future with the Dallas Cowboys has been in question since the off-season began, was cut late Wednesday night, according to a source. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted at Owens' return at a news conference two weeks ago but never definitively said Owens would be back for the 2009 season. Last week at the NFL scouting combine, Jones said the media caught his "drift" about Owens' return but did not elaborate...MORE

Best WR Duos Ever?

23. November 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Cardinals' Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald are putting up some remarkable numbers this season. The trend continued on Sunday as Boldin pulled in 11 more balls to go with 87 yards and a score. The two have combined to 129 balls for 1,731 yards and 16 TD's through 10 games (Boldin missed two games due to sinus injury). Still, the long-term outlook of the duo is a bit cloudy. Fitzgerald was rewarded this past off-season with a new contract and there is no way the Cards can dish out $10 million annually to a second receiver.

So that leaves us with the question of who is the best wideout duos of all-time. Sports Illustrated recently ranked their list of the top 10 duos, here are their top five:

1. Lynn Swann and John Stallworth - Steelers, 1974-82
2. Jerry Rice and John Taylor - 49ers, 1987-95
3. Cris Carter and Randy Moss - Vikings, 1998-2001
4. Mark Duper and Mark Clayton - Dolphins, 1983-92
5. Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt - Rams, 1999-2007

Trendspotter - Week 9

1. November 2008  - Published by Jim Humbert

Here are a few trends to think about before tuning into the games on Sunday:

After getting off to a slow start, Jamal Lewis has been a pretty good running back as of late. In the last four games he is averaging 82 yards and scored three times. But that trend may end on Sunday against his former team, the Ravens. In two games last season Lewis ran pretty well against Baltimore with 64 yards in one game and 92 in the other, and scoring in each. But earlier this year the improved Ravens D held him to just 56 yards and it is doubtful he'll do much better this time around. The Ravens give up just 64 yards on the ground per game and have allowed just one rushing touchdown this season.

While the Bills' success has been a pleasant surprise for many this season, the same can't be said for the play of their stud running back Marshawn Lynch. In his rookie season last year, Lynch averaged 21.5 carries per game and was given the ball at least 18 times in each start. This year he is averaging just 17.6 carries and just 64.1 yards per game. Sure, his touchdowns are way up - six so far this year compared to seven all of last year. But touchdowns can be hit or miss and the fact is, Lynch is not gettting the same opportunities. In the last two games Fred Jackson has gotten the ball 19 times. There may not be a battle for running back in Buffalo but it seems as if Jackson will continue to take carries away from Lynch. Regardless, the Bills could have a tough time running the ball against a Jets D that allows just 82.6 yards per game.

The Rams are back. Okay, they aren't the Greatest Show on Turf anymore, but they are playing competitive football, especailly on offense. One of the guys that has stepped it up has been rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery. In the last three games Avery has 14 catches for 291 yards and two touchdowns. In that same span Torry Holt had just 11 catches for 102 yards and did not score. It would appear that teams are doubling up on the veteran and the rookie is taking advantage of it. Expect both to do well against an Arizona defense that has allowed 14 receiving touchdowns this season - the most in the NFL.

The Dolphins have been another surprise team this season. They have a solid defense and two veteran backs leading the charge. But lately it has been the arm of Chad Pennington leading the team. In the last three weeks he has had games of 284, 295 and 314 yards. He has not thrown for 300 yards in back-to-back games since the beginning of the 2006 season but he should be able to match that feat this week against a Broncos team that is ranked 28th against the pass.

Quick Hits:
Jason Campbell has not thrown an interception this year. The Steelers have not intercepted a pass in thier last four games.
Joey Porter leads the league with 10.5 sacks. Jay Cutler has only been sacked four times this season.
Terrell Owens scored five times in three games against the Giants last year. He has found the endzone in six of his last seven games against New York.

Line-Up Locks: Week 4

26. September 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here is our Week 4 edition of Line-Up Locks. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Donovan McNabb @ Chi.

My take: The Bears are 28th in the league vs. the pass and Brian Westbrook is probably not going to play. What do you think the Eagles are going to do? That's right, pass the ball all day. Expect a huge day from McNabb this week.

--J.T. O' Sullivan @ NO

My take: The 49ers offense is looking like a juggernaut. Who would've thought. And going against one of the poorest defenses in a potential shootout spells a fantastic day for O' Sullivan.

--Jake Delhomme vs. ATL

My take: Delhomme disappointed a little bit last week, yes, and you might have him as your #2 QB, but I expect Delhomme to throw for a couple of TDs against a Falcons team that I'm just not sold on being very good.

Lock Out:
-- --Derek Anderson @ Cin

My take: I think Anderson is going to feel the pressure of Brady Quinn waiting in the wings and make some mistakes, even though he's playing a team he's exploited big time and who essentially helped pad his Pro-Bowl stats last year.

--Kyle Orton vs. Phi.

My take: Don't be fooled by the Bears new-found passing game. They are still a running team with rookie Matt Forte. And the Eagles defense is very, very good.

--Ben Roethlisberger vs. Bal.

My take: He's hurt and going against a rejuvenated Ravens defense AND he has a rookie RB behind him this week.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:

--Chris Perry vs. Cle

My take: He scored his second TD of the year last week against a much better defense than he'll face this week.

--Steve Slaton @ Jax

My take: He racked up over 100 yards last week against a good Titans defense. This week should be no different for this breakout rookie.

--Darren McFadden vs. SD

My take: His turf toe is a concern, but he's practiced fully and seems to be over it and has a very favorable matchup and still no Justin Fargas to steal carries from him. Expect a big day from McFadden.

Lock Out:
--Matt Forte vs. Phi

My take: Forte is young and exciting and has produced thus far, but the Eagles have yet to allow anyone to run for much, so I doubt this rookie can break that trend.

--Chris Johnson vs. Min

My take: Minnesota's run defense is still stout AND Lendale White is there to steal TDs. This is not a good week to put Johnson in your lineup.

--Rashard Mendenahll vs. Bal

My take: His first start and significant playing time comes against a revitalized defense with a banged up QB handing off to him.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:

--Steve Smith vs. Atl

My take: This is the week Smith breaks out. His 60 yards last week was a tease.

--Lavernaues Coles vs. Ariz

My take: Brett Favre seems to have established a connection with Coles.

--Dwayne Bowe vs. Den

My take: It's sad when Damon Huard makes you a better player, but that's the case here. Bowe is a safe bet for 60 yards and a TD.

Lock Out:
--Torry Holt vs. Buf

My take: The Rams offense is a mess. Nobody other than Stephen Jackson warrants a start at this point.
--Brandon Lloyd vs. PHI

My take: He had one really good game and now faces a nasty Eagles defense.

--Chad Johnson vs. Cle.

My take: Leah Bodden is gone, but Chad always seems to falter a little against the Browns. I still think his shoulder is keeping him from making some catches and TJ has passed him on the targeted passes.

TIGHT ENDS

Lock In:
--Kellen Winslow @ Cin

My take:  Tight ends always do well against the Bengals and Winslow seems like one of the few Browns still playing with passion.

--Tony Scheffler @ KC

My take: The Broncos offense is impressive and the Chiefs defense is atrocious.

 --Owen Daniels @ Jac

My take: This is the week for Daniels to step it up.

Lock Out:

--Vernon Davis @ NO

My take: He has been non-existant in this offense. Despite a good matchup until he proves he's in the gameplan, he should be on your bench.

--Todd Heap @ Pit

My take: I just don't see a lot of points being scored by the Ravens offense.

--Heath Miller vs. Bal.

My take: What few passing TDs that the Steelers have will go Santonio Holmes, probably, not Miller.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:

--Eagles @ Chi.
--Bills @SL

--Carolina vs. Atl.

Lock Out:

--Cleveland @Cin
--Cin vs. Cle.
--Washington @ Dal

Fantasy Stockwatch: Week 1

2. September 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Every Tuesday here on the new GSI.com we will be running our Fantasy Stock Watch report. This week's edition looks at a few players with fluctuating values heading into the season. Please feel free to comment and get some interaction going.

ON THE RISE

QB Brett Favre (NYJ) - This pick is a bit of an emotional one, but I am buying into the fact Favre's storybook career is going to have a storybook ending. He is not sure-fire starter, but could prove to be one in larger formats as the season progresses. One of the best backups you can have this season for sure. In his brief preseason action with the Jets he completed 14 of 18 passes for 144 yards and 0 TD's.

RB Earnest Graham (TB) - I will be the first to admit I didn't start the preseason as the biggest believer in Graham. However, with Cadillac Williams on the shelf and the 70-year old Warrick Dunn as his primary backup Graham has little competition for carries. He should be a solid source of yards and touchdowns for the Bucs and makes a nice RB2 in any league.

WR DeSean Jackson (PHI) - I am not big on using rookie wideouts, but Jackson is a playmaker that left enough of an impression on me during the preseason to consider him a nice WR4 or WR5 option in most formats. He has blazing speed and will make some big plays, but consistency may keep his value in check.

FALLING FAST
QB Vince Young (TEN) - Where did all the hype go? After two seasons of proving that he can be counted on, fantasy owners have turned a cold cheek to Young. The Titans did very little to improve their passing game in the off-season. There is plenty of buzz around rookie RB Chris Johnson and his ability to make plays after catching the ball out of the backfield, but even then Young is an average backup at best.

RB Willis McGahee (BAL) - In both the draft I was last night and the auction last week I was taken by surprise on how much the value of McGahee has dropped. This guy was a borderline top 10 RB to finish '07, but injuries, a bad attitude, the emergence of rookie Ray Rice, and the fact that another rookie, Joe Flacco, is your starting QB and it's hard to get excited about the veteran. If he slides towards the end of Round 3 or beginning of Round 4 he could be worth a look, but even that drafting him comes with great risk.

WR Torry Holt (STL) - While still very much a legitimate starting fantasy option, Holt no longer should be considered a top 10 wideout. The Rams offense isn't what it used to be and neither is Holt. The numbers will still be solid, but if he's your No. 1 wideout you might have a problem.

GSI Mock Draft: Round 4

14. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The pressure is growing as owners start regretting they waited too long to grab that second RB or WR1.

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3

Here's Round 4:
31. FISCHER - T.J. Houshmandzadeh - CIN
32. WETZEL - Steve Smith - CAR
33. SIMON - Torry Holt - STL
34. SIMS - Chad Johnson - CIN
35. MURDICO - Darren McFadden - OAK
36. DINSMORE - Plaxico Burress - NYG
37. BOLTON - Brandon Marshall - DEN
38. HUMBERT - Drew Brees - NO
39. CLASGENS - Carson Palmer - CIN
40. PREUTH - Donovan McNabb - PHI

My Pick: I really wanted to add a stud WR to compliment Braylon Edwards, but with a couple of them that I still like on the board I opted to go QB with Palmer being my guy. At No. 39 overall he's far from a steal, but I do expect the Bengals' running game to help him out this year keeping his INT-count down and if Chad Johnson shuts up and plays, Palmer is still hands down a top 5 fantasy QB. I like him much better than McNabb or anybody else is on the board. I figured Palmer would not see it back to me, but guessed that at least one of the other wideouts I was looking at would.

Biggest Reach: I am tempted to list Darren McFadden here because I don't like him in Oakland. However, the reality is this is his true value as many will take him at this point of the draft, if not earlier based on hype alone. The bad pick here once again belongs to Mr. Preuth. Donovan McNabb would likely of slipped another 20 spots in this draft and even if he didn't there are a handful of other similar options. He's coming off another season in which he failed to play in all 16 games and his numbers suggest he's clearly on the decline.

Final Take: Have a plan of action going into a draft. It is important to break each position down in to tiers and know what players will go where. That is how you know when is the right time to pull the trigger. In a fantasy draft it is important to be the one to start the runs, not end them. Overall, the Round was rather uneventful. It did once again provide evidence for my argument of getting your RB2 early on though. I was amazed to see three QB's come off the board in this round.

Chad Johnson for Torry Holt?

13. March 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Despite the fact that both Bengals' head coach Marvin Lewis insistance that the team won't trade Chad Johnson and Rams' head coach Scott Linehan stating that Torry Holt is going nowhere, rumors continue to flood the Internet that a swap of Pro Bowl wideouts may be in the work.

Carlos "Big C" Holmes, of BigCProFootball.com, appeared on the Bengals' flagship station 1530 Homer the Sports Animal on Wednesday with Alan Cutler and stated that there are "many inside the Bengals' organization that are very high RB Darren McFadden" and the team may trade up to get him should they slip. Holmes added that there rumors of the Bengals and Rams making a deal of Johnson for Holt.

The Rams have the No. 2 overall pick and the Bengals have the No. 9 and they will have a few extra compensatory picks in the middle of the draft as well. Holt, 32, is two years older than Johnson and is beginning to see a decline but still has enough left in the tank to produce at high level for a few more years.

Would the Rams bite on a Bengals' offer that included Johnson, the No. 9 overall pick and one of the team's third-round selection, in exchange for the younger Johnson and the No. 9 overall pick?  And would the Bengals really go after McFadden with so many holes on a defense that ranked 27th in the league in 2007?
