Around The Web: Urban Meyer

Here's some news from around the web about Ohio State naming Urban Meyer as head coach:

SUCCESS COULD BRING MISERY (Barry Groves, Forbes.com)
As a haloed future hall of famer, you’ve had more options since quitting Florida than Heffner had bunnies. So you smartly decided to sit back and scout every team you would have to play if you decided to coach a team in a conference – and get paid for doing it. You became a TV announcer of games for the Big Ten Network as you contemplated a return to coaching at Ohio State. As soon as the 2011 OSU season was mercifully laid to rest, you decided to take the job when it was offered. This entire scenario is a dream for every football coach in America, except you. For you it is reality...MORE

MEYER MAY BE SHORT-TERM SOLUTION (Mark Schlabach, ESPN.com)
In six seasons at Florida, Meyer won 65 games and guided the Gators to BCS national championships during the 2006 and 2008 seasons. But Ohio State isn't hiring that coach. The Buckeyes are hiring a coach who went 8-5 in his final season as Florida's coach and left behind an even worse team for his successor...MORE

MEYER, OSU A PERFECT FIT (Andy Staples, SI.COM)
Ohio State fans expect the same 12-14 wins a season Florida fans expect. Meyer said he got too caught up in "the pursuit of perfection," at Florida. He said he now realizes perfection isn't attainable. If he does what he plans to do, everyone will expect perfection again. Managing those expectations when they come will be far more difficult than talking about them now...MORE

Meyer Opts For Leave Of Absence

27. December 2009  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

It appears that Urban Meyer is not leaving Florida as originally reported, according to ESPN.com...

Following the U-turn tradition of Gators men's basketball coach Billy Donovan, football counterpart Urban Meyer announced Sunday that he is not leaving the school after all. At least not for good.

He is taking a leave of absence after the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati here later this week, with assistant Steve Addazio in the thankless role of keeping Meyer's throne warm.

How long will the leave of absence be? We don't know. It's realistic to believe Florida doesn't know, either.

Bianchi: Meyer's Tears Mean More

24. November 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Senitnel is buying Urban Meyer's wishes he want's to stay in Flordia after seeing tears...

Full disclosure: I have a tried-and-true tenet that I always adhere to when referring to high-profile football coaches who deny interest in potentially bigger jobs: "They all lie."

I hearken back to Butch Davis, Nick Saban even Meyer himself, who once said, "All I keep saying is I plan on being the coach at Utah."

Five days later, Meyer accepted the job at UF.

So when I asked Meyer during his Monday news conference if he was ready to dispel the rumors that are once again tying his name to Notre Dame, I never intended to believe him no matter how he answered. It's no secret that embattled Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis may soon get fired. It's no secret that Meyer said a last year that Notre Dame is his "dream job." It's no secret that Meyer is a devout Catholic who has the same first name as eight different popes.

"Yeah, I'm ready to dispel it (the Notre Dame rumors)," Meyer replied Monday. "I'm going to be the coach at Florida as long as they'll have me. Let's make that clear."
