Game Balls: Week 15

17. December 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

There were several players that stepped up big time in Week 15 and many that didn’t show up at all for fantasy owners hoping to advance in the playoffs.

QB
Drew Brees, NO (307 PaYd, 4 PaTD)
– Brees broke out of his mini-slump in a big way for owners when it counted most by throwing all over the Bucs on Sunday. It marked the 20th time in his career Brees has thrown at least four TD’s in a game and it couldn’t have come at a better time for his owners.

Russell Wilson, SEA (205 PaYd, PaTD; 92 RuYd, 3 RuTD)
– The Seahawks’ rookie continued his stellar late-season surge. Since Week 8 Wilson has thrown for 13 touchdowns with just one interception and he’s starting to do more damage on the ground too, including his three rushing scores on Sunday.

RB
Adrian Peterson, MIN (212 RuYd, RuTD)
– All Day continues to defy odds by turning in historic numbers despite coming off a major knee injury. Peterson is now just 293 yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s all-time, single-season NFL rushing record and has emerged as fantasy football’s top running back option in the process.

Beanie Wells, ARZ (67 RuYd, 3 RuTD)
– The Cardinals’ anemic offense actually offered some production as the team snapped a nine-game losing streak with a big win over the Lions. Wells was at the center of the success scoring three times on a season-high 17 carries.

WR
James Jones, GB (5 catches, 60 ReYd, 3 ReTD)
– With much of the attention centered on Randall Cobb and Greg Jennings it was Jones that came away with the big day in Week 15 against the Bears. He made his way into the endzone three times. Amazingly he now leads the NFL with 12 touchdown receptions.

Michael Crabtree, SF (7 catches, 107 ReYd, 2 ReTD)
– Nobody saw the shootout coming as the 49ers traveled to New England. It led to a big day for many players, including Crabtree. It was his second multi-TD game of the season and it was his third time this year he’s broke the century mark.

TE
Dennis Pitta, BAL (7 catches, 125 ReYd, 2 ReTD)
– Pitta posted a big day and scored for the fourth time in six games. Granted poor tackling by the Broncos’ defenders helped paved the way for one of his TD’s, but fantasy owners don’t care how it looked as they gladly took the points.

Aaron Hernandez (10 catches, 92 ReYd, ReTD)
– With Rob Gronkowski still sidelined, Hernandez continued to soar as the top option in the Patriots’ passing attack. When healthy, Hernandez could be argued as fantasy football’s top tight end.

GAME-USED SOCK AWARD
NY Giants: The Entire Team
– The Oddsmakers in Vegas listed the total at 50 points, but somebody forgot to tell the Giants. Eli Manning was awful and that led to terrible stat lines for all involved. Rookie David Wilson looked good early, but became a non-factor after the team was forced to abandon the running game early in the third quarter. Kicker Lawrence Tynes came away with no points for his owners as a result and the defense proved to be a terrible fantasy option.

Studs, Duds, and Sleepers: Week 15

14. December 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

QUARTERBACKS
Stud – Cam Newton (CAR)
: When it comes to the fantasy playoffs I am a big proponent of riding the hot hand. No quarterback has been hotter of late than the Panthers’ QB.  Over the past five weeks of play Newton has averaged 30.6 fantasy points per game throwing for 10 TD’s and just two interceptions while rushing for 293 yards and three more scores during that span. The matchup versus San Diego isn’t the best on the board, but they have given up an average of two passing scores per game during the same time period.

Dud – Tony Romo (DAL)
: Like Newton, Romo has been playing great football of late. However, the Cowboy has struggled in games where teams are able to apply pressure. The Bengals brought it last week and it resulted in Romo’s most pedestrian fantasy output since his Week 5 bye. Pittsburgh is banged up in the secondary and got shredded by Phillip Rivers last week, but something tells me Dick LeBeau has got something up his sleeve here. If Dez Bryant isn’t much of a factor, Romo becomes even less appealing.

Sleeper – Colin Kaepernick (SF)
: The Patriots have emerged as Super Bowl contenders once again and their defense has proven to be one to help fantasy owners. However, they still rank 30th in the league against the pass and are having problems getting pressure on the quarterback. Kaepernick hasn’t put up explosive numbers, but the upside is there. With Tom Brady and the Pats pressing the issue, look for more pass attempts than normal for the 49ers’ signal caller and with the yardage totals we’ve come to expect that could translate him into being a top 10 play in Week 15.

RUNNING BACKS
Stud – Jamal Charles (KC)
: The Chief has registered 100 or more total yards in each of his past five games and only Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster and Doug Martin have produced more points during that timeframe.  Only the Saints have given up more fantasy points to the position for the season than the Raiders, who’ve allowed five scores and 827 total yards to running backs since Week 10. Charles is an elite RB1 option for the fantasy playoff semifinals.

Dud – Michael Turner (ATL)
: It’s tough to tell folks to sit a guy that has scored in four straight and five of his last six contests, but even owners in standard formats will be hard-pressed to get much of out the veteran in Week 15. His fantasy value is as much TD-dependent as it has ever been. He’s only broke the 46-yard mark once since Week 9 and his is only averaging 12 carries per game during that span. The Giants’ D has locked running back out of the endzone of late ceding only one rushing score over their past four.

Sleeper – Joique Bell (DET)
: Bell has been rocky steady for PPR owners for some time as a flex option and his value is rising down the stretch. The team has worked him into a virtual split of carries with starter with Mikel Leshoure. While Leshoure is still a better for a score, Bell is seeing work near the goal line as well now and has become a reliable option the passing game for Matthew Stafford with injuries depleting the depth chart. Facing a Cardinals’ defense that has allowed more points to fantasy running backs over the last five weeks than any other team makes him a nice play in Week 15.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Stud – Vincent Jackson (TB)
: Jackson is enjoying the best season of his career and enters Week 15 just 23 yards shy of setting a new career mark. His 88-yard per game and 20.4 yards per catch output always makes him an appealing option, but touchdowns haven not come as easily. He’s made his way in the end zone just once over his last three games and twice his last five times out. That should change this week though as he faces a New Orleans defense that has allowed 18 touchdowns to wideouts, including one to Jackson himself in Week 7 to go along with his seven catches for 216 yards.

Dud – Larry Fitzgerald (ARZ): It comes as no surprise that Fitz shows up here once again. I been telling people to bench him for weeks, yet he still is finding his way into some owners lineups based on his name. There is no questioning his talent, but if you haven’t noticed he’d be better off with me throwing him the football. The matchup isn’t bad against Detroit, but after being held to just one catch in three of his last four outings with 67 yards over that period and having scored just once in his past seven games Fitzgerald can be nowhere near your starting lineup.

Sleeper – Josh Gordon (CLE)
: Gordon has turned 20 targets into 14 receptions, 220 yards and a touchdown over the last two weeks against Oakland and Kansas City. Now the rookie gets another favorable matchup as the Redskins pay a visit to the Dawg Pound. The Redskins have played better on defense of late, but they’ve still ceded 15 scores to wide receivers on the season and Gordon is a good bet to push that number up. He’s a low-end WR2 with high upside in this matchup.

TIGHT END
Stud – Martellus Bennett (NYG)
: Over the last three weeks only two tight ends have produced more fantasy points than Bennett in standard leagues. He has pulled in 13 of his 18 targets for 158 yards and a pair of scores. Over the past five weeks only the Saints have given more fantasy points to the position than the 12.9 fantasy points per game that the Falcons have ceded. In a game that has the makings of a shootout owners should not hesitate to insert Bennett into their lineups.

Dud – Jermichael Finley (GB)
: Even though he’s improved of late, Finley is a tough player to endorse in Week 15 against the Bears. The Packers’ tight end has only scored in two games all year and has been held to three or fewer catches in eight of his last nine contests. He managed just four catches for 24 yards versus the Bears in Week 2. If you take away his 3-TD game versus Chicago in September of 2011, Finley has only scored once in seven other starts against his NFC North foes.

Sleeper – Dallas Clark (TB)
: Clark is coming off one of his worst performances of the season last week against the Eagles, but he’s still scored three times over his last five games. He scored and caught five balls for 51 yards in Week 7 versus the Saints and will look to do so again on Sunday. New Orleans has ceded six TD’s to tight ends this year with five of them coming over the last five weeks. Clark has top 10 upside in this matchup.

Fantasy Playbook: Week 15

13. December 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

FANTASY 101
-GO WITH YOUR GUT: Regardless of whether you listen to us here or check out 25 different websites, make the final call on your lineup your own. It is recommended that owners gather the most information possible to make an educated guess, but in the end it’s YOUR fantasy team. Don’t let anybody make the call for you as you are going to be the one that has to live with the consequences.

TURNING THE PAGE

(Here’s a quick at players that will warrant discussion as first-round picks heading into 2013)

--QUARTBERACKS: A. Rodgers (GB), T. Brady (NE), R. Griffin III (WAS), D. Brees (NO) – This year has been another reminder that there is a tremendous amount of depth at the quarterback position, particularly with younger players coming along quicker. Of this group, Rodgers is still probably the only likely I’d pull the trigger on in Round 1 and would be later. However, it may be a better option to wait a few rounds and target the likes of Cam Newton, Eli Manning, or Matt Ryan.

--RUNNING BACKS: A. Peterson (MIN), R. Rice (BAL), A. Foster (HOU), T. Richardson (CLE), D. Martin (TB), M. Lynch (SEA), J. Charles (KC), C. Spiller (BUF), C. Johnson (TEN) – Grabbing running backs early and often is still the recommended method to build your team. Peterson right now is the guy that tops my list, but all of these runners should go off the board within the first 12 picks.

--WIDE RECEIVERS: C. Johnson (DET), A. Green (CIN), B. Marshall (CHI) – Like quarterback, wide receiver is a position deep in talent. However, these three players are warrant consideration very early based off their talent and the absurd amount of targets they get in their offenses. I’d be surprised to see more than a couple of wideouts go in round one though.

--TE Rob Gronkowksi (NE) – While Aaron Hernandez and Jimmy Graham could come close to matching his production, Gronk is the cream of the crop in my eyes. Still, he’s more a second-to-third round pick on my board. Expect him to go much earlier than that. Consistent tight end production is hard to find and no player is more consistent when healthy than the Patriots’ tight end.

FANTASY INFIRMARY
--Dez Bryant (finger): It appears that the Cowboys wide receiver is going to delay surgery and attempt to play through his broken left index finger. It leaves owners in a precarious situation as few players have been hotter over the past five weeks than Bryant. The matchup with Pittsburgh raises additional questions. Bryant is a HUGE gamble. Owners with comparable options should play it safe, but unless you have a top 20 WR to plug in as his replacement, it may be worth the risk rolling with him.

--Robert Griffin III (knee):  RGIII is dealing with a sprained knee, but has practiced in a limited capacity the past two days. It appears as if he’s going to play Sunday vs. the Browns, but owners will need to check his status on game day. If active, owners will be hard-pressed to sit the Redskins’ rookie.

--Ahmad Bradshaw (knee): Bradshaw has yet to make it on to the practice field and is questionable for Week 15’s matchup at Atlanta. Some of the team’s beat writers have speculated that Bradshaw may not even make the trip. Rookie David Wilson, who exploded onto the scene a week ago, becomes a borderline RB1 option if Bradshaw is deemed inactive.

--Roddy White (knee): White will be a game-time decision for Week 15 after being held out of practice again on Thursday, according to head coach Mike Smith. The Falcons are optimistic that White will be able to go and if he is active owners shouldn’t hesitate rolling with him. However, this situation is one that will need to be watched leading up to kickoff.

--Cecil Shorts (concussion): The Jaguars’ wide receiver has been cleared to return to practice and game action following missing last week with a concussion. Barring a setback he’ll be active versus Miami and be a viable WR2 option in most formats.

Injuries to Watch: Jay Cutler (neck), Jordy Nelson (hamstring), Sidney Rice (foot), Danny Amendola (heel/foot), Brandon Pettigrew (ankle).

DESPERATION PLAYS

(Owners facing uphill battles in Week 15 may want to roll the dice on some of these high-upside waiver wire finds)

--Montell Owens: After rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown a week ago versus the Jets, Owens showed he could provide some boost to owners decimated at running back. This week’s matchup against the Dolphins isn’t as nearly as friendly, but Owens is going to get the bulk of the carries as the last man standing in the Jaguars’ backfield and could be a top 30 option at the position.

--Dennis Pitta: Despite being inconsistent throughout the season, Pitta has scored three times over his last five games and faces a Broncos’ defense that has given up fantasy points in bunches to tight ends all season long. While Denver has been better of late at defending the position, expect Pitta to be heavily involved in the Ravens’ game plan on Sunday in a game that promises to have plenty of balls going up in the air.

--Lions DEF: Recommending the Lions as your staring defense in a week with so much on the line seems a bit bold, but given the fact they are facing the Cardinals makes them the most attractive option at the position in Week 15. Look for them to come up with plenty of turnovers and sacks and keep the yardage and scoring totals low against the Ryan Lindley led Arizona offense.
