GSI Super Bowl XLVI Picks

4. February 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

It's hard to believe after an entire year of picking games that it all comes down to this one final game. After picking all season I have nailed the winner in 61 percent of every NFL game, but still am about $30 down against the spread. That means it's time to let it all hang out for the big game.

PREDICTION
GIANTS - 31
PATRIOTS - 20

BETS
$110 - Giants +2.5

$50 (2-Team Parlay) - Giants/Under

$10 Prop Bets on (I always go for value)...

  • Will Chad Ochocinco have a catch (YES +130)
  • Total Number of Different Patriots to Score (Under 3.5 +150)
  • First TD scored (Mario Manningham 12/1)
  • First TD scored (Deion Branch 12/1)
  • Alternate Point Spread (NYG -7.5 +400)

HISTORY NOT ON PATS SIDE
With the exception of the upset of St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXVI, New England is 1-4 ATS in its five Super Bowl appearances in franchise history.

OVER/UNDER
From a totals perspective, the 'under' has cashed in five of the previous seven Super Bowls, even though last year's game finished 'over' the total between the Packers and Steelers. However, with the total set at 54 for the Giants and Patriots, the 'under' has hit more often than not in Super Bowls listed at 50 or above in the totals department. Since 1990, five of seven games that closed with a total of more than 50 cashed the 'under,' including Super Bowl XLII between New York and New England (55 total, 17-14 final).

WINNERS USUALLY COVER
Picking the winner and not worrying about the points has helped bettors in the last 11 Super Bowls, with the victorious team covering the spread eight times in this stretch. The only two clubs to win the game and not cash were the Patriots (vs. Panthers and Eagles) and Steelers (vs. Cardinals) since 2001.

AFC EAST WOES
Even though the game has changed since the first Super Bowl in 1967, one number has stayed consistent regarding AFC East teams against the spread. Since the merger in 1970, AFC East clubs own a dreadful 4-11-1 ATS mark in Super Bowls.

NOT AS CLOSE AS IT APPEARS TO BE
The short line doesn't necessarily mean a close game, as seven of the last nine Super Bowls (since 1975) with a closing line between 2 and 3 ½ have resulted in a double-digit victory by the winner.

PARLAY COMBOS
Favorites have cashed in 16 of the last 22 Super Bowls, while the favorite/'over' combination has come in 10 times since 1990. The least frequent combination in this span is the underdog/'over' combo, which only hit in XXXII (Packers over the Broncos) and XXXVII (Buccaneers over the Raiders).

5 Reasons Giants Win

2. February 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

DEFENSIVE FRONT – There’s no questions a big part of the Giants winning six of their last seven contests has been the play of their defensive front since the unit has gotten fully healthy. The key in slowing down Tom Brady is applying pressure and New York is equipped to that as any team in the league.

RUNNING GAME – Unlike New England, the Giants’ offense is not one-dimensional. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacbos are running on all cylinders right now and provide a perfect 1-2 punch to challenge a mediocre Patriots defense.

VICTOR CRUZ – This guy has been simply amazing. Along with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, Cruz has caused matchups for most defenses. With New England likely to match wide receiver turned DB Julian Edelman up against him on many snaps, Cruz could be saving his best performance for last.

ELI MANNING – Many in the Hoosier State dreamed of Manning Super Bowl in Indy and they’ve got one. Just not the one they were hoping for. Eli will have a chance to surpass his older brother Peyton in the house that he built. I couldn’t think of a better way to top off a career season.

GRONKOWSKI INJURY – The Pats’ best offensive weapon, tight end Rob Gronkowski, enters the game with an ankle injury. If he’s not able to perform at the same level in which he played at throughout his 20-touchdown season the Giants will gain a big advantage.

5 Reasons Patriots Win

2. February 2012  - Published by Dan Clasgens

TWO WEEKS – There’s no question in mind that Bill Belichick is the best coach in the league as far as preparing for an opponent and coming up with customized game plan to maximize the Pats’ opportunities to expose an opponent’s weaknesses.  With the extra week to get ready for the Giants and having already been familiar with them in a Nov 6 matchup it is scary to think what the Jedi mind master comes up with for this tilt.

TOM BRADY – A win would give Brady a record 17th post-season victory and tie him for the all-time lead at quarterback with four Super Bowl rings. Need I say more?

REVENGE – Though Belichick and Brady would never admit it, the taste of the Giants beating them in Super Bowl XLII and spoiling their crack at an unblemished 19-0 season still eats at them.  Nothing would satisfy the Pats and their fans more to topple the Giants this time around.

TIGHT ENDS – The Patriots’ two-headed monster at tight end of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez have had their way with opponents all season, including combining for 12 catches, 136 yards and two touchdowns against New York last time out.

OFFENSIVE LINE – New England’s offensive line has gotten better as the year has gone on and have been key in the Pats’ prolific passing attack. The unit will need to have one of its best performances of the season if they are going to prevail on Sunday.
