#6 -- Random woman who knows nothing about sports

Why She's Doing It: She initially thought she was signing up to bring jello to a coworker's office birthday party.

How She Picks Teams: Cutest mascot or, if neither mascot is cute, whichever team's colors come closest to reminding her of spring. Oh, how she loves spring!

Fixing Major League Baseball

11. March 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

700 WLW's Lance McAlister raises some good ideas on fixing MLB...

*Salary cap: I know...union will never go for it. The owners should have stuck to their guns in 1994 when they canceled the season and World Series. The NFL and NBA have a cap. Give fans hope and faith. Make it about the teams that are best at scouting, drafting and developing. Not about spending the most money. 75% of those in my poll question said the Yankees "bought" a World Championship. Not good.

*Add another Wild Card: If you can't slide in a salary cap...increase the playoff pool with one more wild card in each league. 3 division winners and 2 wild card teams in each league. Wild card winners play each other...winner gets team with best record.

*Eliminate the DH: Silliest rule in sport. No other sport plays the game by a different set of rules, based on the league. Adding to the mockery is using it in the AL park in the World Series. Play 162 games one way, then ask a NL team to add a bench bat to their lineup in the AL park and tell an AL team to subtract a bat in the NL park? Insane. Make a concession to the union by grandfathering in the rule and adding a 26th roster spot. Eliminate the DH by 2015

*World Wide Draft: An international player should not be able to offer his skills to the highest bidder. If a player from Japan wants to play in the majors then declare for the draft. Just like everyone else. The NBA has figured it out. Why can't MLB? It would be a step towards reducing the impact of big market teams and big spending.

Reds Add Gomes

22. February 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

from CNATI.com...

Jonny Gomes agreed to a contract Monday morning and will sign, pending his physical. Gomes drove from his Phoenix-area home to the complex, went to the clubhouse to greet his teammates and then take the physical.

It's a one-year Major League contract with a team option, Walt Jocketty said.

Gomes, 29, played in 98 games for the Reds in 2009, hitting .267 with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs. Gomes was arbitration eligible, but the Reds declined to offer him arbitration in December.

Harang: Reds' Difference Maker

20. February 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

from John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer...

If you had to point just one thing that the Reds’ success or failure hinges on, it would be this:

Whether Aaron Harang is the pitcher he was in 2006 and ’07 or the pitcher he was in 2008 and ’09. Harang won 16 games in both ’06 and ’07; he won six games each of the last two years.

New pitching coach Bryan Price is confident Harang can get back to elite starter status.

“I don’t think there’s any question,” Price said. “I think he’s going to have a tremendous year. This is an established major league-innings guy with command. What I think is his best days are ahead of him. You’re going to see better stuff and better location.”

Bengals: Lewis Praises Coffman

19. February 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

Head coach Marvin Lewis praised tight end Chase Coffman, despite a disappointing rookie campaign.

"I am excited about how Chase will help us; he is a big-time receiving threat," Lewis told the team's website. "He catches every ball thrown near him. It is uncanny how he catches the ball. He will help us down in the scoring zones, he will help us in medium yardage situations, he will help us on first and second downs."

The third-round draft pick was inactive for Games 1-12 before being placed on theReserve/Injured list, due to bone spurs in left ankle. He played in all four preseason games, starting one, and recorded two catches for 11 yards.

It remains to be seen if Coffman will be a factor for the team's offense in 2010 or not, but it is certainly encouraging that the head coach thinks so highly of his ability.

Wall Earns SEC Honors

15. February 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

UK men's basketball player John Wall was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

Wall, a 6-4 guard from Raleigh, N.C., averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in wins over Alabama and No. 12 Tennessee. He recorded his third double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds against Alabama.

It was the first time this season he had recorded a double-double with points and rebounds. Wall became the first Wildcat in school history to record double-doubles in points and rebounds and points and assists. He followed that effort with a 24-point outing against Tennessee, his most points in an SEC game.

The honor is the fifth Freshman of the Week award for Wall this season.

The Wildcats have now received a league record 12 weekly awards from the SEC this season.

Cousins Emerging From Wall's Shadow

8. February 2010  - Published by Greg Shoemaker

from CollegeHoops.net

Another dominant freshman big man has emerged. The only problem is, nobody seems to notice. You might think it's hard for a 6'11”, 260-pound big man to be overlooked, but that's exactly what's happened to Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins for much of the season.

The hype around Lexington most of the season has centered on fellow freshman John Wall, and deservedly so. As the point guard, Wall has the ball in his hands nearly every play, and his combination of athleticism and poise has all but ensured that he will be the top pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. But is it possible that he's not even the most important player on his own team?

After all, Cousins, or “Big Cuz” to his teammates, has been a monster in the paint all year long, posting averages of 16 points and nine rebounds per game...all in only 21 minutes per game.
