Cleveland Not Taking News Well

9. July 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

LeBron James made it official on Thursday, announcing he would join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. The superstar made his decision known to the world during a one-hour television special on ESPN that drew big ratings.

Instantly, the Cavaliers went from being perennial Eastern Conference contenders to just another team in the also-rans.

Within minutes shots of people in Cleveland reacting to the news filled the air waves and in typical Cleveland fashion what unfolded was embarrassing, but not surprising.

The same people that dressed up like Dawgs and barked at football games…or at least they used to when they actually HAD a team, were now starting bomb fires with LeBron James jerseys.

James, an Akron native, went from penthouse to outhouse in a matter of seconds in the Mistake By the Lake as he shunned his hometown for the sunny beaches of South Miami.

Nobody took it harder in Cleveland than team owner Dan Gilbert, who took the city to an entirely different level of stupidity and ignorance with his letter to Lebron he sent out in a press release.

Here are just some of the snippets from the open letter:

“You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE

You can take it to the bank. “

Here’s my open message to Lebron:  “YOU DON’T LIVE IN CLEVELAND, YOU LIVE IN MIAMI!!!”

ESPN Jumps Shark With LeBron

7. July 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Like most of you I am so sick of hearing about LeBron James and the scenarios that I actually miss Ed Werder up Brett Favre’s jock.  Since the final second ticked off the clock on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season as they bowed out ungracefully to Boston in the playoffs ESPN has been wall-to-wall coverage throughout its network.

On Thursday night the network will air a one-hour special at in primetime during which James will make his final decision on where he’ll suit up in 2010 and beyond known to the public.

Really? Is this what sports journalism has become?

The answer is simply yes. In a world where tweets and status updates are more consumed by readers than print newspapers athletes, especially the elite ones, are in control of the story.

Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that representatives for James contacted the network, proposing the idea of a dedicated special. The sources said James' representatives requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the broadcast, and ESPN agreed.

"Due to the unprecedented attention and interest surrounding LeBron's decision, we have decided to make this announcement on national television," James' business manager, Maverick Carter, said on LebronJames.com. "By doing so we have generated funds that will be given to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. LeBron has a longstanding commitment to giving back to the community, and has worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs in cities across the country."

It is believed that James is down to four teams including the Cavaliers, Bulls, Knicks and the Heat. Miami appears to be the favorite, but at this point it's anybody's guess. ESPN doesn't even know.

The idea of making money for charity is good, but it still amazes me that an athlete can make a TV special out of free agency.  The thing is as sickened as I am by all of this, I must admit that I will be watching along with millions of more.

Lakers Win Series

18. June 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Los Angeles Lakers took care of business on Thursday night, securing their 16 title in franchise history by knocking off the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7.

It was a classic final game to say the least. Boston not only hung tough early on, but they had the lead for most of the game. However, in the fourth quarter L.A. flexed its muscle have prevailed on their home court.

The Celtics enjoyed a 13-point lead at one point, but it would not last.

Kobe Bryant was held down early in the game, but still managed to finish with 23 points on his way to earning a fifth title and the MVP award. Ron Artest added 20 points and was very much an x-factor.

Paul Pierce had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who just couldn't finish the final quarter of a remarkable playoff run after a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.

For Phil Jackson, the win help him secure an 11th championship.

Best Game Sevens

A look at the best Game Sevens since 1990 (all sports)

3. 1997—Marlins 3, Indians 2, 11 inn.
Cleveland's heartbreak continues. Jose Mesa blows a one-run lead in the ninth, then Edgar Renteria's 11th inning single scores Craig Counsell, paving the way for the Florida fire sale.

2. 1991—Twins 1, Braves 0, 10 inn.
Nine innings isn't not enough for either side to notch a run on the scoreboard. The Twins' Jack Morris pitches 10 scoreless innings, then Gene Larkin finally breaks through with the title-winning hit and game's only RBI.

1. 2001- Diamondbacks 3, Yankees 2
It's the night the Yankees' dynasty ended in the desert. The seemingly invincible Mariano Rivera looks mortal, giving up the game-winning bloop hit to Luis Gonzalez... and it's a fall classic finishing in November.

Celtics Take Control

14. June 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Boston Celtics put together the series’ first back-to-back winning efforts as they won Sunday versus the Los Angeles Lakers in Boston, 92-86.

Despite a 38-point effort from Kobe Bryant, the Celtics simply came up with the big buckets when they needed to. Paul Pierce led all Boston scorers with 27 points, by far his best game of the series. In addition, Kevin Garnett had a monster game with 18 points, 10 boards, five steals and a pair of blocks.

The Lakers’ advantage in this series from the very beginning has the play of their frontcourt, yet minus a stellar Game 1-effort L.A.’s big men are not getting it done.

Defense doomed the Lakers in this one as they seemingly couldn’t come up with stops when they need them most.

That said, Phil Jackson can’t feel too bad about only getting beat by six points. The series now heads back to L.A. for Game 6 on Tuesday and Game 7 on Thursday, if necessary.

Of the 25 finals that have been tied at 2-all, the winner of Game 5 has won 19 of them. Let’s not forget though that Jackson is 47-0 all-time in playoff series in which the team he coached won Game 1, as the Lakers did. Something has to give.

Celtics Pull Even

7. June 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

After dominating the Boston Celtics in Game 1, the Los Angeles Lakers came up short in the second game in L.A. on Sunday night losing at home 103-94.

The Celtics got out of the gate early behind seven first-half three-point field goals from Ray Allen and then held off a Lakers’ charge with the help from stellar play from guard Rajon Rondo.

Allen finished with 32 points (27 in first half) and Rondo came up with his fifth triple-double of the playoffs as he added 19 points, pulled down 12 boards and dished out 10 assists.

Kobe Bryant scored 21 points and Pau Gasol led all Lakers’ scorers with 25 points while grabbing eight boards in the loss.

This marked the first time since 2004 that home team did not sweep the first two games of the NBA Finals.

The series now moves to Boston for Game 3 on Tuesday night.  This game is going to be big. In the history of the NBA Finals the two teams have been tied at 1-1 in the series 32 times.  The team that wins Game 3 has gone on to win the championship 28 times.

The Los Angeles Lakers took care of business in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, disposing of the Boston Celtics at home 102-89.

The key to the game for the Lakers was its play in the frontcourt.  The three stats that tell the story in this one are simple – LA held a plus-12 rebounding advantage, outscored the Celtics by 18 in the paint and beat them 16-0 on second-chance points.

Pau Gasol was a man on a mission, finishing with 23 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. In contrast, Boston’s Kevin Garnett only mustered 16 points, four boards and one swat.

Oh yeah, Kobe Bryant was pretty good too as Ray Allen had no answer but to foul. Bryant finished with a 30-point night.

If watching game wasn’t enough to convince you that the Celtics are in trouble, the following stat should.  Phil Jackson-led teams have won 47 out of 47 series in which his team takes Game 1.  They might as well starting cutting down the nets now!

UK: Five Players Declare For Draft

8. April 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

from Lexington-Herald Leader...

Coincidentally or not, an official UK news release announcing that junior Patrick Patterson and freshmen John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe would enter this year's draft included several quotations that could be used in the next one-and-done recruiting pitch.

"I never thought I'd be in this position after one year," Bledsoe said. "Coach Cal pushed us all to be the best we could be, and he believes I'm prepared to take my game to the next level."

Orton acknowledged his hope for so-called one-and-done status, that is, playing one college season before turning pro.

"Battling with DeMarcus and Patrick every day helped improve my game," he said. "I want to thank the coaching staff for helping put me in a position to be drafted this year."

The Los Angeles Times, which published its mock draft late last month, projected all five UK players in the so-called lottery (the picks by teams not making the playoffs this season): Wall, 1; Cousins, 8; Patterson, 10; Orton, 12; and Bledsoe, 13.

NBADraft.net had Wall first, Cousins fifth, Patterson ninth, Bledsoe 17th and Orton 24th. Draftexpress.com had it Wall first, Cousins third, Patterson 11th and Orton 26th. It did not project Bledsoe as a first-round pick.
