All he does is score TDs and go to Canton

16. January 2008  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Chris Carter is one of 17 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Eagles Head Coach Buddy Ryan, once infamously said of Carter, "All he does is score touchdowns." Well, that's not all he did throughout his stellar career. Carter ranks second on the NFL's all-time list in total receptions (1,101) and receiving touchdowns (130). Those are Hall of Fame credentials and he should be inducted into Canton this summer. Carter played at Middletown High School and at The Ohio State University. He was named to the all decade team in the 1990s and was selected to 8 Pro Bowls. In short, Carter is, without a doubt, a Hall of Famer. His early career in Philadelphia was tainted with substance issues. Ryan essentially made those comments about Carter after he was cut, due mostly to his personal demons. Carter overcame those issues and now lectures to youth and speaks to incoming NFL rookies about steering clear of those things. He's a role model for young people and epitomizes what the NFL is all about (now).

I don't particularly care for Cris Carter, but the guy's a sure thing first ballot HOF'er.  I'm amazed by the Hall class this year, I could be happy with 12-15 of them getting in.

Really, I thought this was one of the weakest classes in a long time myself.

I'm an o-line guy, I'm big on McDaniel and Zimmerman.  Throw in Carter and Darrell Green, and I'm hoping one of the pass rushers (Dent/Dean/D. Thomas) makes it in.  The NFL hall is just so much more subjective than baseball, or even basketball, I think it's a lot more feel than the other sports.

Zimmerman, for sure. Darrell Green, I think so and Derrick Thomas, yes. Maybe Dent too. I'm not sure. I've said before, if the NFL HOF was judged like baseball (and thank goodness it isn't), then Art Monk would get in. His stats are HOF caliber, but to me, he just doesn't pass the "I know it when I see it" test. He was really good. But I don't think you ever looked at him and said, yeah, he's a superstar. Good numbers though. Look at his stats. His are better than some guys already in Canton.

Yeah, the receiver numbers are getting ridiculous, they're going to have to pretty much recalibrate the criteria for them.  Monk, yeah, I could go either way.  What's going to happen with Tim Brown, he's got ridiculous numbers because of the length of his career, but I don't think I ever considered him one of the top receivers in the NFL at any point.  The next ten years are going to be awfully interesting to watch.
