GSI Mock Draft: Round 1

Throughout the month of February the staff at GetSports will be engaging in a fantasy baseball mock draft. Twelve owners will be picking players with the intent of filling a complete 25-man roster and using a basic 5x5 rotisserie format. Players are chosen from both the American and National Leagues. Here are the result from round one:

As much as I would have liked to have not taken him, Alex Rodriguez hands down is still the best player in fantasy baseball. Third base is suprsingly thin again this year and nobody, regardless of position, can challenege A-Rod's consistencty across the board. Really, I like Johan Santana the best. He is going to roll this year in the N.L.

I was surprised Jose Reyes wasn't taken at #2. I was all ready to go a different direction, possibly taking the guy drafte at #2, Hanley Ramirez. I couldn't pass up Reyes at #3 though. He alone could win me the stolen base category...ok, well maybe not totally by himself, but pair him with another couple guys that get a decent amount of SBs (15-25/year) and I'd have that stat locked down in a rotisserie league for sure. The best part is that Reyes can also hit for power. And he hits in a stacked lineup that will drive him in and score me some runs. Next to A-Rod, he's the most complete player out there.

I loved having Holliday at 7th. I thought that was a steal at that spot. Holliday was money last year and is still young and plays for a team that is primarily intact, so there's no reason not to expect more of the same from him. I say he was a steal, but looking at who was taken ahead of him, I can't think of too many people I would bump out of the way. I'm not as high on Hanley Ramirez this year because of the loss of Cabrera to that lineup, but honestly if my pick came and Hanley or Holliday were there, I would've probably taken Hanley, more because of position scarcity than anything else. I'll have more on Holliday and why he's such a commodity later this morning.

I didn't 100% love Rollins, but at that point he was the best available, especially given position scarcity.  I was really hoping Johan or Holliday would slip to me.

I figured that I was in for Santana when I saw I had the 5th spot.  With the trade to NY, as Dan said, he will roll. There was always the chance that Han-Ram or Reyes would fall to me, but it was an outside shot.

Santana does give me the flexibility to not have to worry too much about my pitching staff from here on out.  When you have an ace like that, your solid.
