UFC 85: Liddell vs. Rua

5. February 2008  - Published by Chris Murdico

The main event for UFC 85 was initially supposed to feature Brock Lesnar against an opponent to be determined. After his loss to Frank Mir this past Saturday, he appears to have been bumped from the main event. Instead, the June 14th event from the O2 arena in London, England will feature a great matchup between "The Iceman" Chuck Liddell and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Liddell comes into the fight after scoring an impressive unanimous decision victory over Wanderlei Silva back at UFC 79 in December. Before that "The Iceman" had lost back-to-back fights for the first time in his career. The first loss was to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in May when Liddell lost his light-heavyweight title. Following that he lost by split decision to Keith Jardine in September. This fight with Rua means a lot for Liddell's chances to get back into title contention.

This will be Rua's second fight in the UFC since coming over from PRIDE. His first fight ended in an "upset" submission (rear-naked choke) loss to fan favorite, Forrest Griffin back at UFC 76. Rua apparently came into that fight with a knee injury and only made it worse during the fight. He has since had surgery on the knee and is back to training. Prior to his fight with Griffin, Rua had won 12 of his last 13 fights.

The UFC 85 event will still feature Brock Lesnar but his opponent is yet to be decided. There are rumors that he could end up going up against Tim Sylvia, but there's nothing definite as of yet. Also on the card for UFC 85 right now are Brandon Vera and Marcus Davis. Their opponents have not been determined at this time either.
