Xavier headed to Elite Eight

Xavier is headed to the Elite Eight after knocking off West Viriginia 79-75 in overtime.  The Musketeers got off to a torrid start and led 28-10 with nine minutes to go in the first half. However, West Virginia would take their first lead with 9:45 to go in the second half and from there it would be a nail-biter (8 lead changes).

Josh Duncan turned in a performance of his life scoring 26 points and grabbing five boards while shooting 9-for-10 from the free throw line. The most amazing part of the night though was the fact he didn't foul out despite picking up his fourth infraction at the 10:45-mark.

"I just tried to play aggressive," Duncan said in his post-game press conference. "You know, take what the defense gave me. We did a good job of playing team ball. We didn't break down in tough situations."

West Virginia's big man Joe Alexander was not as fortunate as he fouled early during the overtime period, though he did last to overtime and scored the game-tying bucket to force the extra frame as part of an 18-point, 10-rebound effort.

"We tried to kind of take advantage of some of mismatches we thought we had," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "We were just too stagnant, stood around too much."

Free throws played a big part in this game though. Alexander missed a pivitol one on to convert a three-point play at the end of regulation and the team followed suit in overtime by only connecting on two of six attempts from the charity stripe. Xavier only shot 57% from the line themselves, but they hit them when it counted most.

Duncan may have had the best numbers on the night, but B.J. Raymond hit the money shots.  Raymond, who had made only one field goal all night, hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Musketeers ahead 75-74 with 1:18 to play. He then shook loose on an inbounds play, took a crosscourt pass and made a 3 with the shot clock expiring with 30 seconds to go for a 78-74 lead.

Xavier point guard Drew Lavender also had a key three in overtime, but failed to deliver throughout much of the game. He finished with 9 points on 3 of 11 shooting.

The win gives Xavier its first-ever 30-win season and sends them to the Elite Eight and a showdown with top-seeded UCLA on Saturday.

I irrationally hate Xavier, so I'll bias this statement. But good god, does X play pansy basketball. I've never seen a team more afraid to come inside than X. They live and die by that three point shot, which is the type of basketball that always frustrates. I'm one of those who believes the 3 pt. shot has made basketball less enjoyable. I wouldn't get rid of it, but I would move the line back, for sure.
But, I'm happy for Sean Miller who I really do like. Hopefully he's showcasing his talents for IU, who I'd like to see make a play for him. They'd be well served to get someone of his caliber and someone as young. Regarding X in the Elite 8, that's probably where their talent level is this year. If UCLA can win tonight, I think they'll handle X in short manner, because again, X just seems scared to play inside.

Bitter UC fans can't seem to appreciate what Xavier is accomplishing.  A local poll showed that people wanted Huggy Pooh to win more than Xavier or West Virginia.

I say hats off to Xavier and keep playing your pansy ball, it has taken you to the Elite 8 and who knows how far you can go.

Hey UC fan, how did that first round loss in the CBI feel?

Enough of the Xaiver hate talk man. Now that Huggins is gone and UC lost in the first round of the CBI, UC fans are left with nothing to do but be bitter. The Muskies have their hands full with UCLA on Saturday, but rest assured they are fully capable. I don't see how you can call the performance of Josh Duncan pansy-like. The man was a monster on the inside, but when he picked up his fourth foul with 10 minutes left in regulation, he had to play careful in the paint.

FYI Jimmy, the line goes back to 20'9" next season.  Which isn't a bad thing, teams have gotten a little too reliant on it.  Moving it back should, hopefully, force teams to develop some sort of game between the paint and the three point line.

Duncan did not impress me with his inside game. Xavier hasn't had a big man who impressed me inside. Their big guys shoot too many threes. Like I said, I'm not a Xavier fan, so I'm biased. I am glad to hear that the 3 pt. line is moving back. It's just ridiculous how easy it seems to be for those guys to make those shots. I just like nice physical inside play. Elbows, block outs, massive leaping. X will see that with Mr. Love on Saturday. That's physical basketball. I do agree with the statement that should just keep playing "pansy basketball". It has gotten them far. I salute them for that. It's just not my cup of tea.

And Bret, I didn't care about the CBI, thought it was a joke, so I didn't care that UC lost to Bradley. They weren't a tournament team. I'm not bitter. Mick is righting a ghost ship. It takes time.

JFish acolyte:

YOU ARE WRONG!  What you saw last night was a very TOUGH basketball team, both physically and mentally.  You don't win an OT game in the Sweet 16, especially against a Huggins coached team, without being tough.  Pansy never comes into the equation.

This is coming from a Texas grad.  So I have no feelings for XU or UC.

No big man has ever impressed you on the low blocks?  Seriously?  David freaking West never impressed you?  Were you watching basketball then, because he sure as hell impressed me.   And I wasn't even living in Cincy at the time.

And Duncan made several HUGE shots inside the paint last night when X needed.  At least twice down the stretch when things got tough, Duncan made a baby hook in the lane, got the harm and made the freebie.  Without that, they don't win.

Now where you are right is that I too saw nothing in that game last night that would lead me to believe that they have anything for Love at UCLA.  If Duncan continues to play well, X has a fighting chance.  But I still think Love has too much.
