GSI Mock Draft: Round 19

4. March 2008  - Published by Jim Humbert

It must be getting easier to throw out some names as the mock draft goes on as we finished an entire round in less than a day. Number 19 was heavy on pitching, particularly veterans although there were a few young guys in the mix. Also, four catchers have been chosen in the last round and a half as owners remember they need to field two backstops in this league. Take a look:

Team #1 grabbed one of the few remaining closers who will likely have the job on opening day. Unfortunately for Gregg, he is not likely to hold his position through the season. The Marlins used a number of guys to close games last season and may do so again. It will be something to watch.

The second team picked up Garland as its fifth starter. That's pretty good considering he is the number two guy on one of the best teams in the league. He does not strike many out but does not get rocked very often. With the added run support, 18 wins is not out of reach. He's done it twice before.

I went with Oakland A's starter, Rich Harden, here in round 19. He's an injury risk, but all signs say he should be ok this season. A guy that once was a top pick for starters a couple years ago has been bitten by the injury bug and fallen hard in the rankings. If he can remain healthy he could end up being a huge steal this late in the draft. The A's don't have a lineup that will score him a lot of runs but he could have the potential to win double digit games and have an ERA around 3.00, if not lower. For my fifth starter (sixth if you count the currenly recovering from surgery Yovani Gallardo), I'm pretty happy to be able to put Harden in that spot.
