Packer out at CBS

14. July 2008  - Published by Ben Bolton

According to the Associated Press, CBS Sports' lead college basketball announcer Billy Packer will end his 27-year tenure with the network.  Clark Kellogg will take his place in the booth along side Jim Nantz.

Packer confirmed the move Sunday to the Miami Herald, through a CBS official.  Packer said that he is going to pursue other basketball projects and had declined further comment.

Kellogg said he was "excited, humbled, and quite pleased" to be moving out of the studio and going courtside.

The long, national nightmare that is Billy Packer's mouth has finally been silenced.  We can only hope that silence lasts forever.  There will be much rejoicing throughout the land.  And no, I will not be "pouring one for my homey, Packer".  Instead, I will be tossing back cold adult beverages in joyous celebration.  The Witch is indeed dead.

I just wish they would have gone with Bill Rafferty, instead of Clark.  Nothing against Clark, I just like the excitement of Rafferty more.  It seems like Rafferty-style energy is what is called for when you reach March Madness, especially the Final Four and Championship game.  Can you imagine what last year's Championship game would've sounded like if Rafferty had been on the call, instead of Crap Pack giving us information on how, and I quote, "Kansas has been here before, Jim. Overtime of a NCAA Championship game.  Back in 1949, the Jayhawks defeated..."

I'm absoulutely positive that's what Bill Self was telling his 2007 team in the huddle that night as well.  "Guys, you just have to remember that your grandpappy and pappy were here before.  Draw on their inner strength back in 1949.  You too can win if you do that."

God, I'm glad he's gone.  Good riddance.

100% agree with J-Fish, especially on the Raftery part. That's kind of a slap at him.

I thought Raftery would be great as well, but they probably didn't want to break him up with Sean McDonough, and they have such phenomenal chemistry as a pair that I can see why they wouldn't want to mess with a good thing.  Surprisingly, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't Jay Bilas.  As much as he irritates me as a studio guy, in-game he's very good.  Kellogg might get a little overbearing as the color guy over the entire Final Four, but they could probably have done worse.

Is Dick Vitale the next old school guy to go?
