UFC: Silva Takes Just 61 Seconds

20. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens

From MMAJunkie.com:

UFC Fight Night 14's main event offered little surprise as UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva successfully made his light-heavyweight debut with a quick first-round knockout of veteran fighter James Irvin.

The bout capped off Saturday's UFC Fight Night 14 event at The Palms Las Vegas, which aired live on Spike TV.

The event, a late booking put together to counter Saturday's debut event for Affliction Entertainment, concluded in predictable fashion as Silva, largely considered the world's top pound-for-pound fighter, easily disposed of Irvin in just 61 seconds.

I wouldn't say Silva winning was predictable at all. Even with him being the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, you never know what can happen when a guy moves to a different weight class, especially when they move up in weight to fight guys that typically are much bigger than them.

With that said, the way Silva blew Irvin's face up surprised me to say the least. I wasn't surprised Silva won, even though I picked Irvin to win, but I was surprised how he did it. He basically beat Irvin at his own game, beating him the way Irvin typically beats his opponents. It was a thing of beauty to see how Silva saw the kick from Irvin coming, caught his leg and then hit him with a stiff right that dropped him immediately. The guys is amazing. If there was anyone that could hold two titles at the same time it would be Silva...although that will be hard on him having to gain and cut weight so much.

I was really looking forward to getting to see Silva, since he so rarely gets scheduled on free TV.  That was just brutal.
