GSI Mock Draft: Round 6

17. July 2008  - Published by Dan Clasgens
The annual GSI Blog Mock Draft is cruising right along, and you can really start to see who the "experts" are:

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3 | ROUND 4 | ROUND 5

Here's Round 6:

51. FISCHER - Ben Roethlisberger - PIT
52. WETZEL - Kevin Jones - CHI
53. SIMON - Julius Jones - SEA
54. SIMS - Rudi Johnson - CIN
55. MURDICO - Tony Gonzalez - KC
56. DINSMORE - Edgerrin James - ARI
57. BOLTON - Marvin Harrison - IND
58. HUMBERT - Greg Jennings - GB
59. CLASGENS - Selvin Young - DEN
60. PREUTH - Lee Evans - BUF

My Pick: With Travis Henry out of the picture in Denver, the job belongs to Selvin Young. He showed flashes of greatness during 2007, but he also gaves owners a reason to question his durability. Veteran Michael Pittman is going to have role in the offense for sure. Young will serve as my RB3 and could wind up being a potential RB1. His upside at this spot is too good to pass up.

Biggest Reach: I am not trying to pick on WETZEL, but the Kevin Jones pick is terrible. I can see how he got caught up in the moment after KJ landed with the Bears earlier this week, but he's likely to start the year on the P.U.P. List. Even after he gets back to action he's still sharing too many carries in what I expect to be a cluttered Bears' backfield. Every RB taken after him in this round is a safer and better pick.

Final Take: When you get to Round 6 every player has their baggage. Ultimately, though when in doubt I go with upside (players who are young and on the rise). That philosophy speaks well for those that took Roethlisberger, Jennings, and Young but not as much for Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison.

I did take some crap for the James pick. And I totally see your point and for the most part agree. I am conservative by nature, so I try to find known commodities over the unknown. So, yeah, I might be missing out on super potential, but with Edge, I know what to expect and he has almost no competition for his job. Now, I made this pick from work and I don't remember realizing Selvin Young was still there. I like Young a lot. I had him off my board for some reason (didn't have my master sheet at my work), so for that I can take some crap too. If I could do it over, I would take Young over James, for sure.

I am not going to pretend I love my pick of Greg Jennings. Sure, with Favre gone (probably?) the Packers will take a step back. But Rodgers is not a complete loser. He has looked good when he has had the chance. And Jennings is in his third season in an offense with a decent line and good running game. He should get near 1,000 yards but might only get half of the 12 TD's he grabbed last year.

My pick of Tony Gonzalez here was a good one I feel. Six rounds in I got one of the top TEs in the game, one that still puts up numbers like a WR2 would, and some WR1s even. He's a huge redzone threat and with only Dwayne Bowe in KC to steal some catches away, Gonzo still have a lot of value in fantasy football.  He's playing on a team that doesn't have a top notch QB no matter who it is under center. That hurts his value a little, but the sixth round is a good time to snag him up if he's still out there.

Its amazing how far Marvin Harrison and Rudi Johnson have fallen in the fantasy world. Rudi used to be a first or second round guy, and here he was taken in the sixth round. Harrison used to go in the second or third round typically but with Reggie Wayne as the star wideout in Indy, he's fallen to the middle rounds.

The only pick I question here is Wetzel's pick of Kevin Jones. He could end up on the PUP list to start the season, and if he doesn't he won't be the starter in Chicago. Gotta question Wetzel's thinking here with the Bears starter, Matt Forte, still sitting out there...a guy that I actually ended up taking in the next round. In my opinion, Jones shouldn't be drafted at all this year unless he's taken as a handcuff to Forte.
