No Ocho Cinco This Yearo

23. October 2008  - Published by Chris Murdico

Number 85 of the Bengals has been waiting to officially be recognized as Chad Ocho Cinco by the league all season. Chad changed his name during the off-season but the NFL would not allow him to put Ocho Cinco on the back of his jersey.

The monkey wrench thrown into the whole name on the back of the jersey deal involved the maker of the jerseys themselves, Reebok. They were requiring him to buy back all of the No. 85 jerseys with the name "Johnson" on the back before they would manufacture the "Ocho Cinco" ones. To this point that hasn't happened and it would require a lot of dough out of Chad's pocket in order to buy all those back that had been printed.

So the Ocho Cinco jerseys will wait until next season. Reebok plans to print those starting with the 2009 season jerseys next year without asking for repayment on the old jerseys as long as the name changed doesn't go into effect until then.

Here's the rub though, now that everyone knows the new jerseys will be printed next season and considering the fact that the Bengals are awful this year, who will actually buy one of the current jerseys? Someone may buy one for nostalgic reasons, but odds are, unless you're either a big fan of No. 85 (which if you are you probably already have a "Johnson" jersey) or just a die-hard Bengals fan in general, you're probably not going to go out and buy the old jersey.

Even with the new "Ocho Cinco" jerseys being introduced next season, you can be sure that there will still be plenty of "Johnsons" down at Paul Brown Stadium next year, the biggest of which will be in the owner's box.

It would not surprise me if Ocho Stinko has a new home next year, but knowing Mike Brown they probably will give him an extension.
