Reds Search For OF Continues

6. January 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

The Reds have made a few moves this off-season, but I think like most Reds fans I am still waiting for one more big move. The Reds need to add a run producer and I am not yet comfortable with the outfield depth.

One of the names on the free-agent wishlist, leftfielder Pat Burrell, can be scratched off. The right-handed slugger opted to sign with the Tampa Rays to surprisingly low $16 million, two-year deal. Also, the Cubs have reportedly signed Milton Bradley, another named rumored to be on the Reds' radar. That deal was three years, $30 million (are you kidding me? way too much). I wasn't big on either of these guys, but both could have more than helped to fill the void.

The Cincinnati Reds remain interested in free agents Rocco Baldelli and Jerry Hairston Jr., MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told Sheldon that he has talked with their agent, Casey Close, during the weekend. Jocketty said that he expects something to happen this week with regard to Hairston Jr.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Reds bring Hairston Jr. back, but I don't want to overpay for him. As for Baldelli, the team finally got rid of Griffey and Freel and now that they want to add a player that makes both of those guys look like Lou Gerhig when it comes durability.

The Reds have had no talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Andruw Jones and appear not to be interested, Sheldon notes. I wouldn't make a trade for Jones, but if he gets released I don't see how Cincinnati could not be interested in his services. Jones still plays solid defense, is right-handed, and would need to prove himself in a one-year deal to get one more chance at a payday in 2010. Where better to boost your power numbers than Great American Ballpark?

“It’s something we’ve discussed. We’re trying to get someone down to see him play (in Winter Ball)," Jocketty told team beat writer John Fay. "We’ve got to get some more information. We’ve had no discussions with the Dodgers.”

One look at the potential batting order tells me all that I need to know about the Reds' chances in '09:

CF W. Taveras
SS J. Keppinger
2B B. Phillips
1B J. Votto
3B J. Encarnacion
RF J. Bruce
C: R. Hernandez
LF: C. Dickerson
Pitcher

Please Mr. Jocketty add something more to this!
