28 Writers Have Some Explaning To Do

12. January 2009  - Published by Greg Simons

Rickey Henderson, the greatest leadoff hitter ever, and quite clearly one of baseball's all-time greats, was appropriately elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  The only question is, why did 28 of the 539 voters NOT vote for him?  What more are they looking for in a candidate?  It's likely the fact that his cockiness rubbed a few writers the wrong way, because it sure can't be his career numbers that they deemed less than acceptable.

It will be interesting to see if Greg Maddux, as clean and professional as any ball player, gets a full 100% of the vote.  Probably not, and when the time comes, those that pass him over should be made to justify his absence from their ballots.

Greg, nobody ever got 100%. Cal Ripken (is there any argument?), Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth. None of them. The Sportswriters are a sanctomonius, holier than thou group. I would love to see the way they vote for HOF. Because putting all the power in the hands of these jackasses is not right. I also never understand how someone gets in on their 15th try? What did Jim Rice do over the last 15 years to sway voters? Why now, and not then? You're either a hall of famer or you're not. If he was 15 years ago, then he's not now. He didn't hit any more HRs. Statisticians didn't find more hits or RBIs for Rice, did they? No. It's these baseball writers playing God and isn't right.
