Fantasy: Drafting In Tiers - 2B

While cheat sheets and rankings are great, I often find it more valuable to come up with my own rankings based off of a research and place players by position in tiers. I am a big believer that balance is what wins, especially in fantasy baseball. I have already taken a look at my 1B TIERS. Now, it's time to look at second basemen.

TIER 1 - Dustin Pedroia (BOS), Ian Kinsler (TEX), Chase Utley (PHI)

TIER 2 - Brandon Phillips (CIN), Alexi Ramirez (CWS), Brian Roberts (BAL)

TIER 3 - Dan Uggla (FLA), Robinson Cano (NYY), Howie Kendrick (ANA), Rickie Weeks (MIL)

TIER 4 - Mark DeRosa (CLE), Kelly Johnson (ATL), Jose Lopez (SEA), Placido Polanco (DET), Aaron Hill (TOR), Orlando Hudson (LAD)

TIER 5 - Felipe Lopez (ARI), Mike Aviles (KC), Mike Fontenot (KC), Akinori Iwamura (TB), Freddy Sanchez (PIT)

TIER 6 - Kaz Matsui (HOU), Mark Ellis (OAK), Clint Barmes (COL), Alexi Casillla (MIN), Luis Castillo (NYM), Ray Durham (MIL)

Drafting Strategy: Getting your hands on a sure thing at second base is a luxury in fantasy baseball, but as you can see from my first three tiers there are at least 10 adequate options at the position. If you are fishing in Tiers 4 through 6 for your starting 2B and/or your middle infielder you are leaving your line-up susceptible.

Final Take: I make a run at a Tier 1/Tier 2 option in the early to mid-rounds of your draft/auction.
