Fantasy: Drafting In Tiers - Catchers

22. March 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens
While cheat sheets and rankings are great, I often find it more valuable to come up with my own rankings based off of a research and place players by position in tiers. I am a big believer that balance is what wins, especially in fantasy baseball. I have already taken a look at my 1B TIERS, 2B TIERS, 3B TIERS,  and SS TIERS. Now, it's time to turn our attention to some fantasy backstops.

TIER 1 - *Joe Mauer (MIN), Russell Martin (LA), Brian McCann (ATL)

TIER 2 - Victor Martinez (CLE), Geovany Soto (CHC), Ryan Doumit (PIT)

TIER 3 - Jorge Posada (NYY), Chris Iannetta (COL),  Bengie Molina (SF)

TIER 4 - Ramon Hernandez (CIN), Pudge Rodriguez (HOU), AJ Pierzynski (CHW), Dioner Navarro (TB)

TIER 5 - Mike Napoli (ANA), Brandon Inge (DET), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (TEX), Gerald Laird (DET), Yadier Molina (STL), Matt Wieters (BAL)

TIER 6 - Kurt Suzuki (OAK), Chris Snyder (ARI) Jeff Clement (SEA), Jason Varitek (BOS), John Baker (FLA), Rod Barajas (TOR), Jason Kendall (MIL)

Drafting Strategy: No position is falls under the position scarcity rule like catcher does. With injury concerns surrounding Joe Mauer to start the season, there are few mortal locks. Grab one of them if you can, particularly in two-catcher leagues.

Final Take: Don't be afraid to overpay for a catcher, but if you don't land a tier 1 guy waiting may prove to be your best option.
