Miller Says No To Arizona

5. April 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Update from CBSSports.com:

Sean Miller, after meeting with his family and staff late Sunday, decided to reject an offer from Arizona and remain at Xavier, sources have told CBSSports.com.

Miller flew on a private plane to Albuquerque, N.M., then drove to Sante Fe, N.M., early Sunday to meet with Arizona president Robert Shelton, athletic director Jim Livengood and a high-powered booster named Paul Weitman. The meeting lasted roughly four hours, and when Miller returned to Cincinnati he was described by a source as about "50-50" in terms of staying at Xavier or leaving for the Pac-10.

Late Sunday, that changed. Miller will return for a sixth season at Xavier.

I can just hear the X fans crying now, scratching their heads asking, why would he leave Xavier? It's one about the money and two, Arizona is a more prestigious job and school. This second part is where X fans are delusional. They think that just because they've gotten to a couple elite eights that X is some national powerhouse. They're a successful regional school who plays in a god-awful conference. It's the conference, more than the talent, that is holding X back in terms of prestige and national recruiting ability.
That being said, I think Miller would be foolish to take this job. It's not the right fit for him. Zona is quickly losing its grip on national prominence. Since Lute Olsen retired, they've had four coaches in four years. If Miller goes, he's got his work cut out for him and ultimately, I think it will come down to if X re-ups his contract and shows him the money.

He turned it down, but he will not be there forever.  There is a job one state to the east that he has his eye on (think "steel city") that he will drop X for in a heartbeat.  Arizona was not the job for Miller because he's an east coast guy.  I was shocked to hear he was even on the plane, which shows you just how serious he is about staying at Xavier...he's not.  FACE IT: Xavier is the Gonzaga of the midwest.  ZERO chance of winning a National Championship.  They will have a better team next year, but again, no chance of winning a title.  You win NCAA Championships with 5-star players.  And I don't see any 5-stars on that roster.  If a coach has a desire for that title, he will not stay at X.  Sorry, but that's the truth.
