RECAPS: Round One | Round Two | Round Three

ROUND FOUR
37. BROERING - QB D. McNabb (PHI)
38. SIMON - WR B. Marshall (DEN)
39. DINSMORE - RB R. Brown (MIA)
40. BRYANT - WR W. Welker (NE)
41. WETZEL - QB A. Rodgers (GB)
42. SCHMITT - RB C. Benson (CIN)
43. SIMS - TE J. Witten (DAL)
44. MURDICO - WR R. Williams (DAL)
45. ANSELMO - RB K. Smith (DET)
46. CLASGENS - RB R. Bush (NO)
47. FISCHER - RB J. Stewart (CAR)
48. HUMBERT - QB P. Rivers (SD)

POSITION BREAKDOWN: RB (5), QB (3), WR (3), TE (1)

MY PICK: Like many others in the league, the time to get my RB2 came in Round 4. This league is not a PPR league, so Reggie Bush loses some of his luster. However, he is still a nice grab with the 46th overall pick and a steady RB2 option with upside. Injuries have been a problem, but he's worth the risk here. One look at his numbers through the first seven games (two rushing TD's, three receiving TD's, and 660 total yards) last season though so his potential to be a solid starting option.

BEST VALUE PICK: Aaron Rodgers will be valued much higher this season than last and rightfully so after he had 10 multiple-touchdown games in '08. I don't put him in the same ballpark as the top three quarterbacks, but he definitely is nice value 18 picks after Tom Brady went and 19 picks following Peyton Manning.

MOST LIKELY TO DISAPPOINT: Count me as somebody that is not buying into the Roy Williams being an automatic replacement for Terrell Owens in Dallas. Of the three receivers selected within this round, he by far has the best chance to be a bust. He had problems adjusting mid-season in Dallas and suffered a foot injury down the stretch. The potential is there, but at this point I can find somebody that had more than seven touchdown catches over the past two years.

FINAL TAKE: This round was predictable. We saw our first tight end go off the board in Jason Witten (nice pick), five teams go with RB2 and a few quarterbacks and wideouts. In general, waiting on quarterback didn't prove too badly for the three owners that took signal callers here.

Dan,

I agree with your assessment of Roy Williams being the biggest chance to disappoint.  He had his chances in Detroit and showed he didn't have a pair and last year with TO drawing double and triple teams Roy didn't do squat.  He will be a bust.  Miles Austin is more than likely the man in Dallas.

I went with Witten because when he has been healthy he has put up WR type numbers and with what was left I felt he was a better pick than one of the WR like Williams.

The Cedric Benson pice was as embarrassing as it was stupid.

Agreed about the Cedric Benson pick. That was the stretch of this round. I love my Ronnie Brown since I had just taken Addai in the previous round, this was a great insurance/RB3 selection. I'll match my RBs with anyone else's.

Now, let's talk about the trend that is abundantly clear - Running back depth. With so many teams running multiple RB schemes, there are many more options at RB than in previous years. Conversely there are fewer WR options, as you'll see when we post the next couple of rounds. If you don't get a top flight WR early, you're going to get scrubs at this pivotal position. So, for my other drafts coming up, I'm going to increase (slightly) the value of Fitzgerald, Moss, A. Johnson, a little more, as well as the next tier of WRs. Get em before getting a RB2 because RB2 will still be there in rounds 4-5.

After having my heart broken too many times by higher round QBs, I've taken the philosophy of waiting on QB.  Last year I thought I would be golden with waiting until rounds seven or eight, and my tandem of David Garrard and Jake Delhomme didn't work out quite as well as I had hoped.  Early on, I traded for Carson Palmer to address the hole I saw...oops.

So, now I intend on grabbing a top-eight QB, but more than likely not a top-three.  Very happy to have Aaron Rodgers here, as he will perform like a top-five QB by the time the season is up.  It was between him and Philip Rivers, who had a strong end of the year in 2008, but I'm not sold on the Chris Chambers/Vincent Jackson combo there, so Rodgers it was.

And I agree with just about everyone else, Cedric Benson too soon (though I wouldn't be surprised if he tops last year's numbers) and Roy Williams I would avoid like the plague.  I think Calvin Johnson showed what Roy Williams was worth.

Nice value pick with Brown JD.
Witten at 4??  naaaa
Good luck with Bush Dano. That knee is going to linger all season I'm afraid....
Man, I hope I'm wrong.
Can't say I agree with Stewart this early.  I'm betting he battles with injures all season in his second year and DeAngelo takes off.

As for my pick in K Smith.  He could be top 10 or higher by season's end.  He gets overlooked because he is in Detroit, but he is all they have and plays all three downs. He is better than people think, and will be a known commodity by season's end.  Hell, in one mock draft I saw, he was picked in the second round.  Could be too high  there, but I think nice value at 4.
