GSI Mock Draft: Rounds 6-7

4. August 2009  - Published by Dan Clasgens

This is the point of the draft where every player has baggage, but also where gems can be found:

RECAPS: Round One | Round Two | Round Three | Round Four | Round Five

ROUND SIX
61. BROERING - TE K. Winslow (TB)
62. SIMON - QB M. Ryan (ATL)
63. DINSMORE - WR A. Bryant (TB)
64. BRYANT - RB C. Wells (ARI)
65. WETZEL - WR E. Royal (DEN)
66. SCHMITT - RB W. Parker (PIT)
67. SIMS - WR B. Edwards (CLE)
68. MURDICO - QB M. Schaub (HOU)
69. ANSELMO - WR A. Gonzalez (IND)
70. CLASGENS - RB K. Moreno (DEN)
71. FISCHER - TE O. Daniels (HOU)
72. HUMBERT - RB D. Ward (TB)

ROUND SEVEN
73. HUMBERT - WR L. Evans (BUF)
74. FISCHER - RB F. Jones (DAL)
75. CLASGENS - WR D. Driver (GB)
76. ANSELMO - WR L. Moore (NO)
77. MURDICO - WR S. Holmes (PIT)
78. SIMS - QB J. Cutler (CHI)
79. SCHMITT - WR L. Coles (CIN)
80. WETZEL - WR H. Ward (PIT)
81. BRYANT - TE C. Cooley (WAS)
82. DINSMORE - TE G. Olsen (CHI)
83. SIMON - WR S. Moss (WAS)
84. BROERING - RB J. Lewis (CLE)

MY PICKS: I added a third running back and a third receiver in Rounds Six and Seven by nabbing Knowshon Moreno and Donald Driver. One of these two guys will be my starting flex option. Moreno has competition in Denver, but I think he's going to have the most immediate impact of the rookie runners. I love him as a RB3, but he may not get going quickly enough to be a lock as a RB2. Driver is not flashy, but he is consistent. With Aaron Rodgers being so highly regarded you have to figure Drive is safe pick here and will provide nice depth.

BEST VALUE PICKS: Matt Ryan (nice pick this late); Anthony Gonzalez (ready to step up w/Harrison gone); Felix Jones (will see increased role in Dallas); Greg Olsen (on the rise).

MOST LIKELY TO DISAPPOINT: Antonio Bryant (QB questions); Willie Parker (declining role); Santana Moss (too inconsistent); Jamal Lewis (tank is empty).

FINAL TAKE: These rounds are the most fun to me. You are still drafting guys that will start regularly in many cases so the margin for error is slim. Typically, I go for younger players with more upside at this point. However, I had to settle for a veteran in Driver after some of the young receivers I was targetting fell off the board.

I disagree about Antonio Bryant. He had QB questions last year too and is playing for a big contract.

I finally took my second RB in Derrick Ward to go along with Peterson. Ward had a big year while sharing time on the Giants and now looks to be the top man in Tampa. He may lose goal line carries with Earnest Graham lurking, but he should get the bulk of the touches. I then picked up my 3rd WR in Lee Evans. He should really benefit from having T.O. on the Bills as defenses won't be able to double him up.

I may be spitting on a forest fire but I don't like Bret's pick of Braylon Edwards. Sure, he's talented but the QB situation is up in the air and the Browns have no one else to catch the ball, meaning that he'll rarely be open. And, Mr. Sims, who led the league in drops last year? (Yeah, I'm in for it)

I do, however, think Jay Cutler will be okay in Denver. With their speedy WRs the Bears have been looking to throw the ball down field for the last few years. Now they may have their guy to do it.

Yes, that's my mistake. I know Cutler is in Chicago now, not Denver.

Antonio Bryant will be interesting to follow as half the experts have him as a bust and the other half have him hovering just outside the top 15 WR's.  I'm not sure either way.

Hey Jimmy-Joe, last time I checked we don't play Fantasy Football based on the previous year or maybe that is why you SUCK so bad every year if that is how you choose to draft your players.  Edwards had a rough year as did the entire Brown offense, he will be back this year and return to what is expected from him.

Lee Evans won't do crap this year.  The Bills running game is pathetic and DB love to sit back and cover the second option (Evans) where they can get a multitude of picks.

I agree, Bret, that the Browns and Edwards had a rough year. But why do you expect Edwards to be better this season?

The Browns and Bills may be worth comparing. Trent Edwards is no stud but may be better than both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. Both running games are in trouble but I like the combo of Lynch, Jackson and Rhodes better than a beat-up Jamal Lewis. As for catching the ball, the Browns lost Kellen Winslow and did little to replace him. Meanwhile the Bills added T.O. which will help everyone on offense. In the end, I'll take the Bills and Lee Evans over the Browns and Braylon Edwards, easy.

Yes Dan, I know this is the third Saints players I have picked, and yes they are my team; but, they ARE the reigning #1 offense in the NFL.  Personally, I think Moore at 7 is a steal.  Anyone who follows this team will know that Moore is the clear #2 and Brees LOVES him.  He is the quickest receiver on the team and I didn't see him drop a pass during TC, and that was with a recovering shoulder.  He ran every pattern during practice full speed and he just works his butt off.  He will provide me with consistent production week in and week out.  In a PPR league, I predict he finishes in the Top 15.

I know you liked that Gonzalez pick...sucker!

Bret, made it to the Super Bowl in all my leagues last year pal, but keep trying. You look at what they have done and estimate what you think they'll do. You use their stats (which include the past) as an indicator. It was mentioned that Bryant has QB questions, which is true, but he had that last year and still excelled, so that indicates that he can overcome QB issues. Whether he will this year, well none of us really know.

Addendum to prior post of August 5.  Transcripted from a practice noteboox 8/6 on neworleanssaints.com:

Wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson says that the best route runners on the team are WRs Marques Colston and Moore. The hours they put in working on their timing with Brees after practice – typically joined by the other wideouts – has helped make them the quarterback’s favorite targets over the last two seasons. Moore is tireless, running routes endlessly after each practice, basically until there is no one left to throw to him. While Brees signed autographs today, a couple of coaches took turns throwing to Moore, and their arms tired out before he did...
