Lineup Locks: Week 2

17. September 2009  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Here's a list of some players to lock in and lock out for Week 2.

Lock In QB:

Matt Ryan vs. Carolina - You saw what the Eagles did to the Panthers last week, right? Ryan had a great game last week versus the Dolphins. Last year alone, Ryan put up more than 400 total yards versus the Panthers. Count on 200+ yards and 2 TDs from Ryan this Sunday.

Trent Edwards vs. Tampa - Don't believe any of the hype that there's already trouble upstate New York. Take note of what Dallas did to Tampa (which was torch for 3 scores and almost 400 yards) and take note of what Edwards dd to New England on Monday night which was 200+ yards and 2 TDs. Expect similar or even better numbers from the Bills QB this week.

Joe Flacco @ SD - I know that Flacco's career high of 307 yards and 3 TDs came against the Chiefs. I'm not expecting that type of performance, but I'll take 200+ yards and a couple of scores. The Ravens offense is much better than you might think and Flacco is primed for continued success.

Lock Out QB:

Carson Palmer @ Green Bay - The Bengals offense is a disaster, just as they were last year, without Palmer. Green Bay's defense is much improved and their secondary is formidable having picked off Jay Cutler four times last week. Until you see a return to the Carson Palmer of old, then I'm moving him to the bench.

Jay Cutler vs. Pittsburgh - Coming into this year, Cutler was someone I thought had top-five caliber talent. He still has that talent, but made six awful passes, four of which got picked off, last week versus Green Bay. He isn't looking at the safe, short passes and is only looking downfield. This week he gets the Steeler defense. So this week, I would not play him.

Matt Schaub @ Tennessee - Schaub was one of my most over rated QBs coming into this season. I said he was injured too often and too inconsistent. What did he do last week? 166 yards, no TDs and a pick. Against an even tougher defense, on the road, I'm passing on Schaub and advise you to lock him out.

Lock In RB:

Clinton Portis vs. St. Louis - In addition to the aforementioned Schaub, I had Portis ranked as one of the most overrated running backs, however, this week, Portis has a sweet match up. Take advantage of St. Louis' abysmal defense and lock Portis in for Week 2.

Julius Jones @ San Francisco - Had I written this column for Week 1, I might've had Jones on my lock out list. I'm not generally a fan, but he made a believer out of me and has no competition for carries. I think Jones can push for 100 yards again and a score.

Fred Jackson vs. Tampa - The Bills do not miss Marshawn Lynch and won't miss him again this week. Jackson should be considered a top 10 RB this week, especially in PPR leagues. He'll touch the ball 30 times which will be good for 100+ yards and a score as well as several catches.

Lock Out RB:

Willie Parker & all Steeler RBs @ Chicago - This just in: The Steelers can't run the ball any more. A closer look at their stats from their Super Bowl season last year shows a very pedestrian running game. Do not start Parker or Mewelde Moore or Rashard Mendenhall this week for that reason.

Cedric Benson @ Green Bay - Yes he scored what should've been the game winning touchdown last week. Yes, he had 22 carries. Those are all positives. But right now, the only Bengal on offense I'd start is one Ochocinco. All other Bengals should be locked out until the offense shows it has more than 7 points in it.

Felix Jones vs. New York Giants - This is a dangerous call. It could blow up on me. That's the thing with Felix. He could get you nothing like his 22 yard performance last week versus a lousy Tampa defense or he could go off. I'm playing the match up here and say that with the Giants very solid defense that this one will be low scoring and Jones will not be a factor.

Lock In WR:

Santonio Holmes @ Chicago - Holmes and Big Ben have deloped quite a connection. Big Ben is looking his way a lot. Holmes had 12 looks last week. I expect him to be good for 75 yards and another score as Holmes works his way toward WR1 status.

Justin Gage vs. Houston - Gage led the Titans in receptions last year and in week 1. Kerry Collins looked his way early and often. Going against an average secondary, I think Gage has another solid outing this week.

Vincent Jackson vs. Baltimore - On paper you might think this is a tough defensive match up. But, remember the Chiefs put points on the board versus Baltimore last week and I don't think the Chargers will have any problem doing the same. Jackson will get his touches and perhaps even a score (again).

Lock Out WR:

Eddie Royal vs. Cleveland - This looks like a good match up for Royal, but so did the Bengals last week. Royal laid an egg with two catches for 18 yards in Week 1. That's enough to scare me off of him until I see something from him, or more from Kyle Orton who short armed passes and generally looked very average. Royal will be hurt with Cutler's absence from this team and with Orton under center.

Lance Moore @ Philadelphia - Five different receivers caught six TDs last week for the Saints. None of them were Lance Moore. This was against the Lions. This week, be concerned as to why Moore couldn't get in on that action as the Saints will have fewer scores against one of the leagues toughest defenses.

Lock In TE:

John Carlson @ San Francisco - Carlson can not only be considered a lock in at Tight End, but I would consider starting him in leagues where you can run the TE position as a WR. He had 6 catches for 95 yards and two TDs last week. Don't miss out on that kind of action.

Heath Miller @ Chicago - The Steelers are a passing team. Brian Urlacher is out for the year. The middle of the field (formerly known as Urlacher's turf) will be open for business and Miller will benefit from it.

Brett Celek vs. New Orleans - It should be a high scoring affair when these teams lock up. Celek was an early target for McNabb, but with McNabb out, Kevin Kolb or Jeff Garcia will count on Celek to bail them out. 50 yards and a score is a definite possibility.

Lock Out TE:

Owen Daniels @ Tennessee - As mentioned, I'm not a fan of the Texans offense right now. They have a bad match up this week. Find another option at TE if you have Daniels or roll the dice with him.

Visanthe Shiancoe @ Detroit - If I had written this column last week, I would've missed on this one too. I would've thought, with Brett Favre's love of tight ends that Shiancoe would've gone off. Instead, he had 3 catches for 26 yards. While the match up is solid, I think Adrian Peterson is going All Day against the Lions and Shiancoe will just be there to watch and block.

Great call on Matt Schaub.  Can't believe I listened to you.

Ryan, sorry about that. I stand by the prediction. Schaub stunk in week 1 and had traditionally not done well vs. the Titans, who's defense clearly misses Haynesworth and their d-coordinator Jim Schwartz.
