The Reds sent shockwaves through the baseball world by signing 22-year old Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman, who has defected from his native country, to what is a reported 5-year, $30 million contract.
Chapman made a splash in last year’s World Baseball Classic and is said to consistently hit 100-plus mark on the radar gun with his fastball and has a slider that flat out baffles hitters, reaching the low 90’s.
Cincinnati was one of several Major League teams bidding for his services after Chapman worked out for all interested parties in Houston late last month.
The move comes as a surprise for the cash-strapped Reds though, and could signify that the team is about to part ways with one of their high-priced players. That could include Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, or possibly current closer Francisco Cordero.
Some scouts look at Chapman more as a closer, but I find it tough to believe that the Reds don’t view him as starter with ace potential.
If he does pan out, the team has just added another great young arm to the mix of Edinson Volquez (recovering from Tommy John surgery), Johnny Cueto, and Homer Bailey.
