Fantasy Baseball Tiers: First Basemen

8. March 2010  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Though rankings are always nice, I prefer drafting my fantasy teams using a tier system. The idea is to have as many upper tier players at as many positions as possible. It works the best in fantasy baseball as balance is often a key to success. Here are my tiers for first basemen for the 2010 season.

TIER 1
Albert Pujols (STL)

TIER 2
Mark Teixeira (NYY), Miguel Cabrera (DET), Ryan Howard (PHI), Prince Fielder (MIL), Adrian Gonzalez (SD)

TIER 3
Justin Morneau (BOS), Joey Votto (CIN), Kendry Morales (ANA), Kevin Youkilis (BOS), Lance Berkman (HOU)

TIER 4
James Loney (LA), Billy Butler (KC), Carlos Pena (TB), Derrek Lee (CHC), Adam LaRoche (ARZ), Jorge Cantu (FLA)

TIER 5
Aubrey Huff (SF), Todd Helton (COL), Lyle Overbay (TOR), Chris Davis (TEX), Paul Konerko (CHW), Daric Barton (OAK), Russell Branyan (CLE)

TIER 6
Daniel Murphy (NYM), Casey Kotchman (SEA), Logan Morrison (FLA), Ty Wiggington (BAL), Ryan Garko (SEA), Hank Blalock (FA), Carlos Delgado (FA)

No doubt Pujols is in a tier all his own. Dude is pretty much in a tier all to himself in overall rankings, not just first basemen. If he can stay healthy, this could be the year Votto jumps to Tier 2 going into next season. As Reds fans I'm sure we'd all love to see that!
