At a position where depth is an issue Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has proven to be a valuable fantasy commodity during his three seasons as an everyday player.
Track Record: Pedroia is not a tremendous source of power, but he comes in big in batting average and runs and still is a safe bet for 15 HR’s and 75 RBI on annual basis.
What he did last year: The Beantown favorite was unable to recapture the magic of his 2008 AL MVP campaign, but most of that can be attributed to his batting average dropping 30 points. The rest of his statistics were pretty much the same. His plate discipline was still stellar as he only struck out 45 times in 626 at-bats.
What is different about this year: The Red Sox are kicking around the idea of moving Pedroia to fifth in the lineup, rather than his normal No. 2 spot. Such a move could see the RBI numbers rise and his approach at the plate alter a bit. However, nothing appears imminent.
2010 outlook: No matter where Pedroia hits, he is the Peyton Manning-pick of fantasy second baseman – a reliable and consistent performer that is about as safe of a pick as you can make.
