Bengals Aggressive In Offseason

7. May 2010  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Trying to parlay the success they had in 2009, as defending AFC North Champs, the Cincinnati Bengals put forth one of the most aggressive off seasons in team history. In the past, the team had been known as a non-player, a team that would sit back on its laurels and let big names pass on by. This year, the Bengals stepped up their game by resigning key members and bringing in other important free agents. They were even rumored to have been close to signing Terrell Owens, but went a younger direction instead. In the past, big names like that would not even consider Cincinnati. Compile all of this with an intriguing list of drafted players this April and the team is clearly sending the message that they intend to defend their title and hopefully advance in the playoffs. Let's look at the key parts of the off season.

THE RESIGNINGS
Bobbie Williams
was signed to a multi-year deal which will mean one of the most experienced and outspoken players on the offensive line will remain in stripes. Consistency on the o-line is vital and the Bengals have the entire offensive line back. Roy Williams signed another 1-year deal. This was a big deal as the one area the Bengals were thin was their defensive backfield. Riddled with injuries himself, Williams brings experience and solid tackling to 8th-ranked defense. The Bengals also added to the defensive line by resigning Tank Johnson, who turned a once-troubled career into a story of leadership and inspiration. Other key players who were resigned include LB Rashad Jenty, who adds depth to the linebacking corps, center Kyle Cook, a vital part of the offensive line and Frostee Rucker, who adds depth to the d-line.

THE FREE AGENTS
This is the area the Bengals really did well (on paper) by adding key pieces to the depth chart. Knowing that Lavernues Coles was a complete disaster, they let him walk and signed the younger, bigger, faster Antonio Bryant to a four-year deal. This gives Carson Palmer another bigger weapon opposite Chad Ochocinco. By signing place kickers Mike Nugent and Dave Raymer, the Bengals sealed the fate of Shayne Graham who, despite a great career in stripes became known as "Shank Graham" for his ill-timed missed FGs. Nugent, who has local ties, brings some new blood to the kicking team. Gibril Wilson was just signed and went mostly unnoticed, but since the team did not draft a safety, they needed additional depth at the safety position. Wilson is not a Pro-Bowl caliber player, but will add much-needed depth to Mike Zimmer’s defense. And, without a doubt, the most controversial free agent signing, perhaps in team history, was that of Adam “Pacman” Jones. Pacman brings a high risk/high reward potential to the team. Signed for the league minimum to a two-year deal, Pacman could step into the nickel back role and perhaps add an exciting dynamic to the punt return team.

THE ROOKIES
The Bengals have not been known as the best drafters, traditionally, but of recent, their current success is tied a lot to what they’ve done in the draft. This year looks to be the same as they filled some major areas of need with some major talent. Tight end Jermaine Gresham was the most-talented tight end in this year’s draft class and the Bengals made him their first-round selection. This gives Carson another weapon, one which the team hasn’t had in a long time. They then took DE Carlos Dunlap, who has the potential to be a pass-rushing force, something this team lacks. At worse, he’s additional depth with Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom and will compliment last year’s pick Michael Johnson. Zimmer is developing a slew of coachable, athletic studs on his defense. In the third round, the Bengals passed on taking UC wideout Mardy Gilyard for Texas standout Jordan Shipley. Shipley was the right choice for this team as he fills the other glaring hole in the offense, the slot receiver. Since TJ Houshmandzadeh left, the team has had no one to run the short routes or be the possession receiver. Shipley runs great routes, is fearless up the middle and has incredible hands. He also adds depth to the special teams. The other rookies taken include Brandon Ghee a cornerback; they also added another LB, WR, DT and a couple offensive linemen. All in all, the draft gives the team the most depth they've ever had and will spur a great deal of competition in training camp.
