Lineup Locks: Week 1

9. September 2010  - Published by Jimmy Dinsmore

Who's ready for some football? Here's a list of players to lock in and lock out for the first week of the 2010 season.

LOCK IN

Cadillac Williams, RB, Tampa: Not a sexy pick by any stretch and likely looked at as a reserve for most fantasy teams, but Williams has a very favorable match up right off the bat. The Bucs host the Cleveland Browns, whose defense scares absolutely no one. Williams will get the lion's share of the carries and therefore makes for a very sneaky play this week and is someone you should lock in. Expect a 100-yard rushing game and for the Caddy to find pay dirt.

CJ Spiller, RB, Buffalo: The rookie will get to show off what he's got versus the Dolphins. The Bills are a very bad team, but Spiller is one of their shining stars on the team and you can bet he'll get plenty of touches, including short outlet passes, making him an even more attractive option in PPR leagues. Lock in Spiller and enjoy watching this young talent.

Johnathan Stewart, RB, Carolina: Stewart is in the infamous running-back-by-committee with Deangelo Williams, who is considered the real fantasy star of the duo. But, it's Stewart who you must start this week. Last year, against the Giants, Stewart went off (on one leg essentially) for 200+ yards and a score. Now healed up, Stewart looks for the yardage and the end zone.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit: In my fantasy frenzy blog, I advised a GSI reader to start Stafford over Joe Flacco this week. It's a bold piece of advice, but it will pay off. The Lions are much improved and Stafford is coming into his own. Expect 200+ yards and at least two TDs from Stafford and lock him in.

Derek Anderson, QB, Arizona: Let me make it clear, I don't think Anderson is a good quarterback. I think he's tragically flawed by locking onto targets and tipping his passes. But he can put up huge numbers and Week 1, he will put up big passing numbers against a lousy St. Louis secondary. Start everyone on the Cardinals offense this week and lock in Anderson, if you don't have one of the elite QBs.

Phillip Rivers, QB, San Diego: Rivers is probably a must start every week, but his match up this week is too good to pass up. I'm not worried about Vincent Jackson not being there. He still has Gates and Malcolm Floyd to throw to and faces a very pedestrian Chiefs secondary. Lock in Rivers this week and enjoy tremendous stats from him.

Jabar Gaffney, WR, Denver: Gaffney faces a Jacksonville defense that allowed 21 passing TDs last year. He is also playing with a bit of a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove that he's a legitimate #1 receiver. After seeing his stats this week, you'll realize he is one. Lock in 100 receiving yards and a score this week for Jabar.

Mike Williams, WR, Tampa: The Bucanneers rookie wide out gets to ease into the NFL by facing the Cleveland Browns. Look for a big coming out party for the rookie from Syracuse. Williams is talented and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He will be targeted often and might even find the end zone.

Pierre Garcon, WR, Indianapolis: Garcon is now #2 on the depth chart behind Reggie Wayne. He's probably option #3 behind Wayne and Dallas Clark, but that's still a nice role for any fantasy player. Garcon should be good for 70+ yards and might find the end zone on a long play. Lock him in as a WR2 in your lineup this week.

Zach Miller, TE, Oakland: Miller is not one of the "elite" receivers but could likely become this year's Shiancoe or Finley (i.e. Tight Ends who catch tons of TDs). Miller is the most viable receiving target for Jason Campbell, and based on his history, Campbell is a QB who likes throwing to tight ends. Miller could get 75+ yards and will be a red zone target. Lock him in.

LOCK OUT

Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle: I like Forsett. He's an asset for your fantasy squad, but I am concerned about the Seahawks offensive line and I am not sure there will be enough touches for Forsett to make him viable. Oh, and this week he goes against a very underrated San Francisco defense. For now, I am locking out Forsett out.

Laurence Maroney, RB, New England: Is there a more frustrating situation than the Patriots backfield? Maroney is the starter. He can rack up some yards, but it's too sporadic. Plus, Maroney faces the Bengals defense which was 4th in the NFL against the run.

Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore: I love Flacco. I have him in both of my fantasy leagues. I expect great things from him, but not this week. The Jets defense, especially with the aforementioned Revis, scares me. This will be a low-scoring affair, mostly ground based. Tamper your expectations, just this week, on Flacco and lock him out (just this week).

Donovan McNabb, QB, Washington: It's weird to write Washington next to his name. McNabb is recovering from a leg injury and has been limited in practice. I think he plays, but I'm concerned about facing an aggressive Cowboys defense. I'm equally concerned about McNabb's lack of receivers. So, for that reason, he makes the lock out list.

Anquan Boldin, WR, Baltimore: Again on the fantasy frenzy, I advised a GSI reader to sit Boldin. He faces Revis Island. That should be enough. But, since he's new to the Ravens, it might also take some time for Boldin and Flacco to get on the same page. Boldin is a must start, except this week, when you should lock him out and prove you're a fantasy genius to your other owners who'll say, what are you crazy?

Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jacksonville: Here's another #1 WR that I'm advising to lock out. Again, the corner back assigned to cover him is the reason. Champ Bailey will be all over Sims-Walker who has proven not to do well against the elite corners in the league. Look for the Jaguars to run the ball, a lot, and count on a disappointing performance from Sims-Walker.

Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore: He is still a fan favorite in Maryland, but he should not be considered a viable tight end. This week, against the Jets, no way can you think about starting him.

Cool. Do you know what the most annoying part about the internet is? how irritating it is to try and find a reliable source of information. I've tried god knows how many different websites looking for this, and spent so long trying to locate it. Not to mention the fact that thousands of the websites just copy>paste eachothers articles, it's just.... impossible sometimes. Sigh.. anyway, now that I've finally found a pretty decent site, I guess I can stop complaining.. so, I apologize. And thankyou!
