Did you my fantasy football segment with Mo Egger on ESPN1530 Thursday. Here are my notes:
QUARTERBACK WOES
--Top Tier or Not?: The biggest surprises to this point of the fantasy season at come at the quarterback position where Kyle Orton, Michael Vick, Shaun Hill, David Garrard and Mark Sanchez find themselves in the top 10 fantasy scorers at the position through five weeks. The surprise arrivals also mean there are some big names not producing them. Among them are Drew Brees, Matt Schaub, and Tom Brady. Brees has only hit the 300-yard mark and have had two games with just one touchdown. Brady has been steady, but a low output vs. Miami and a bye week have skewed his numbers. Schaub has easily been the most disappointing of the group. He didn’t throw a TD last week and has two more weeks where he threw just on scoring strike.
SETTING YOUR LINEUP
START ‘EM
QB Eli Manning (vs. DET) – Expect Eli to put up his fourth multiple-touchdown pass outing in six games as the Giants go up against a weak Lions’ secondary this week.
WR Hines Ward (vs. CLE) – With Big Ben back under center this week expect the best numbers of the season out of the veteran wideout. In his last four games versus the Browns at Heinz Field, Ward has had at least six catches and 70 yards with a pair of 100-yard outings and three touchdowns in that span.
SIT’ EM
RB Joseph Addai (@WAS) – It does appear that Addai will be able to play through his neck/shoulder injury this week. Still, putting him in your line-up is risky as it remains to be seen how close to 100 percent he is. The Redskins’ rush defense is respectable against the run having allowed just one 100-yard rusher to this point of the season.
TE Chris Cooley (vs IND) – Cooley has developed a nice rapport with new quarterback Donovan McNabb and his early-season production in the best indicator. However, owners may want to consider other options this week as he faces the Colts’ defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points to tight ends of any defense in the league.
FANTASY INFIRMARY
QB Aaron Rodgers (concussion) – He returned to practice on Thursday and looks like he’ll be a go for Sunday. The Packers have been decimated by injuries, including the loss of Rodgers’ favorite target, tight end Jermichael Finley. It will be interesting to see how all of this affects Rodgers’ production.
RB Pierre Thomas (ankle) – It is looking more and more likely that Thomas will miss his third straight game due to a high-ankle sprain. With both him and Reggie Bush out the Saints’ offense has not looked the same. Expect Ladell Betts and Chris Ivory to continue to share the workload in his absensce. Neither are very appealing lineup options though.
RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) – The good news is Moreno did return to the practice field on Thursday. The bad news is the Broncos face the Jets this week so even if he plays, and at this point it appears he will, owners may want to wait before putting him back in the lineup.
Other injuries worth noting include: Michael Vick (ribs), Jay Cutler (concussion), and Peyton Hillis (thigh)
BYE WEEK FILLERS – ARZ, BUF, CAR, CIN
QB Vince Young (@JCK) – He’s coming off a season-best effort vs. DAL last week and faces the NFL’s 30th-ranked pass defense in Week 6.
RB Marshawn Lynch (@CHI) – Lynch still is on a bad team, but at least in Seattle he should get touches. A decent flex option for now.
WR Roy Williams (@ MIN) – After posting 206 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the past two weeks I am starting to believe again.
TE Marcedes Lewis (vs. TEN) – He is a touchdown machine – just 16 catches on the year, but five for touchdowns.
