NFL Draft: Top Running Backs

25. April 2011  - Published by Dan Clasgens

Everybody has a take on the upcoming NFL draft. Here's mine...

FIRST-ROUND TALENT
1. Mark Ingram, Alabama (5-9, 215)
If any running back goes in the first round it is likely to be the former Heisman Trophy from Alabama. Ingram is a balanced runner who can become an every-down running back at the next level, who is capable of contributing to both the running and passing attack for a potential suitor. While many teams are skeptical of investing highly in running backs these days, Ingram will definitely tempt many teams with holes in the backfield to grab him early.

NEXT IN LINE
2. Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech (5-9, 211)
– I am a big fan of Williams and consider him the best back after Ingram. He didn’t run as fast as he wanted to at the combine, but he has the potential to make an immediate impact at the next level.

3. Mike Leshoure, Illinois (6-0, 232) – He has potential to go in the first round he has amazing power and decent speed, though I am not sure I agree with the comparisons to Rashard Mendenhall, another former Illini runner.

4. Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington (6-0, 194) – Jones’ stock is soaring after a stellar Pro Day where he ran a 4.29 40 and notched a 39.5” vertical. Capable of catching the ball well out of the backfield, Jones is a taller version of Chris Johnson.

BEST OF REST
5. Jordan Todman, Connecticut (5-9, 203)
6. Daniel Thomas, Kansas State (6-0, 228)
7. Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State (5-7, 200)
8. DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma (6-0, 213)
9. Shane Vereen, California (5-10, 210)
10. Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon St. (5-7, 196)
